BTI’s Rants and Ramblings: Week 3 Conference Rankings

Another change at the top as the Big 12 is just dominating right now, has several teams that appear to be elite, and pushed ahead of the SEC against BCS opponents.  The gap between those 2 leagues and the other 4 is significant though.

1. BIG 12 (23-2)
vs. BCS Opponents: 5-2
#1 Oklahoma 23, #5 Florida State 13
#8 Oklahoma State 59, Tulsa 33
#9 Texas A&M 37, Idaho 7
#19 Baylor 48, SF Austin 0
#23 Texas 49, UCLA 20
Iowa State 24, UCONN 21
Texas Tech 59, New Mexico 13
Kansas State 37, Kent State 0
Missouri 69, Western Illinois 0

Georgia Tech 66, Kansas 24

Recap: Wow, a very impressive week for the Big 12.  Oklahoma dominated FSU, and the other ranked teams in the conference handled their business.  Texas seems to be back on the right track, and Iowa State gets a surprise win over Big East champ UCONN.  Kansas is the one embarrassing member of this conference, but every conference has at least one of those guys.

2. SEC (22-4)
vs. BCS Opponents: 4-2
#2 Alabama 41, North Texas 0
#10 South Carolina 24, Navy 21
#14 Arkansas 38, Troy 28
Georgia 59, Coastal Carolina 0

Clemson 28, #21 Auburn 24
Louisville 24, Kentucky 17

Recap: The league did not have the best of weeks, with both games against BCS opponents going against them.  That was their first 2 losses against BCS schools this year though, so they remain 2nd.  The elite of the conference is really elite.  The problem is the depth this season.  Ole Miss, Kentucky, Vandy, and Tennessee are all mediocre teams.  Auburn appears to be down, and Mississippi State did not look great against LSU.

3. BIG 10 (26-10)
vs. BCS Opponents: 5-5
#7 Wisconsin 49, Northern Illinois 7
#11 Nebraska 51, Washington 38
Illinois 17, #22 Arizona State 14
Iowa 31, Pittsburgh 27
Michigan 31, Eastern Michigan 3
Penn State 14, Temple 10
Minnesota 29, Miami (OH) 23
Purdue 59, SE Missouri 0
Indiana 38, South Carolina St. 21

Notre Dame 31, #15 Michigan St. 13
Miami 24, #17 Ohio State 6
Army 21, Northwestern 14

Recap: Well, I think Michigan State and Ohio State both proved to be fairly fraudulent in their first tests.  This conference still has some really good teams at the top, as Wisconsin looks like a national title contender and Nebraska has a top offense.  Illinois pulled off a job-saving win for Ron Zook, and Iowa used a big comeback to beat Pitt.  This conference could handle most other conferences, but just not the top 2.  Clearly the 3rd best league though.

4. ACC (19-7)
vs. BCS Opponents: 5-5

#13 Virginia Tech 26, Arkansas St. 7
Miami 24, #17 Ohio State 6
Clemson 38, #21 Auburn 24
Georgia Tech 66, Kansas 24
NC State 35, South Carolina St 13
Wake Forest 48, Gardner Webb 5

#1 Oklahoma 23, #5 Florida State 13
#18 West Virginia 37, Maryland 31

Recap: Florida State blew a golden opportunity to give this conference a marquee win, but then Clemson got some of that respect back with a surprise upset of Auburn.  Miami also dominated a less-than-great Ohio State team.  Georgia Tech also smashed a helpless Kansas team and the conference had a couple other wins against crappy 1-AA teams.  All in all, a pretty good week for the league, but that Florida State game still shows me the elite of this league are not elite nationally.

5. BIG EAST (16-7)
vs. BCS Opponents: 3-6
#19 West Virginia 37, Maryland 31
#20 South Florida 70, Florida A&M 17
Louisville 24, Kentucky 17
Cincinnati 59, Akron 14

USC 38, Syracuse 17
Iowa State 24, UCONN 21
Iowa 31, Pittsburgh 27

Recap: This conference has 2 pretty good teams and 6 below average/crappy ass teams.  Anytime they face any type of challenge, they get beat.  They can be more competitive than in years past, but they just don’t have teams that can play with the elite.  This week, West Virginia gets LSU at home.  That will be the ultimate barometer of the top of this league.  If they get slammed, then I am moving this league to 6th.

6. PAC-12 (19-10)
vs. BCS Opponents: 4-6
#12 Oregon 56, Missouri State 7
USC 38, Syracuse 17
Utah 54, BYU 10
Colorado 28, Colorado State 14
California 63, Presbyterian 12

#11 Nebraska 51, Washington 38
#23 Texas 49, UCLA 20
Illinois 17, #22 Arizona State 14
San Diego State 42, Washington State 24

Recap: This conference really sucks.  Except for Stanford.  The end.
