Courtesy of Phil Steele, which has the most geeky, info packed magazine imaginable, here are the University of Louisville’s unit rankings (Rick Pitino Jokes Aside) for the Big East. Consider this is the same Big East with Syracuse and Rutgers and UCONN. The same Big East that has not made the BCS title game since Miami left the conference. The same BCS conference who hasn’t had 2 BCS game participants in years. And this is where each individual unit ranks in that conference (out of 8th):
Quarterbacks: 6th (which is actually tied for last with Pitt and Syracuse)
Running Backs: 4th (the high point at any position for the Cards, mid-pack in a weak conference)
Wide Receivers: 5th (remember they return NO receivers who caught a touchdown last year)
Offensive Line: 6th (This is being called the most experienced part of UL’s team)
Defensive Line: 8th
Defensive Backs: 8th
Special Teams: 8th
And no you are not reading that incorrectly. Every aspect of the UL defense ranks LAST in the Big East, according to Phil Steele. And Steele has been quite accurate with his predictions over the past decade.
I will continue to beat this drum until the game, and I rest my reputation (hahaha) on this: Kentucky SHOULD win this game by 10+ points. EASILY. I don’t care about the rivalry aspect, which is overrated by the way, and I don’t care about our QB’s and new coach. Mike Hartline has won twice against UL, so don’t give me he can’t do it a third time against a crappier UL team. Our skill players are better than their skill players. Our depth is better than their depth. And maybe most importantly, our CONFIDENCE is better than their confidence.
Oh, and as you see above, they generally suck at nearly every position.
