BTI’s Rants and Ramblings: The Ridiculous side of UK Football

If you are new to this site, you need to read our motto at the top of the site, which says our goal is to bring you UK news in the most ridiculous manner possible.  So, in that theme, I thought it only appropriate to make my comments about that ridiculous game last night in the most ridiculous way I could think of.

It is RIDICULOUS this game was scheduled like it was in the first place.  Don’t tell me fans are supposed to show up in another state during the work week at 9PM for an opponent from the Sun Belt.  It doesn’t make you a bad fan if you didn’t show, it makes you a freaking working person.

It is RIDICULOUS that was the flat performance Kentucky put on.  What were you preparing for all summer Cats players?  You have practice hard (or so we hope) in the heat, and then when it comes to time to play, you come out uninterested?

It is RIDICULOUS that the strength of the offense, the offensive line, was pushed around by WKU.  If you are not the strength, then the offense can never succeed.  And if the Sun Belt’s worst team did that, imagine what LSU is gonna do.  Or Louisville.

It is RIDICULOUS that Morgan Newton continues to make poor decisions with his throws.  YOU ARE A JUNIOR!  A junior who has started almost 10 games in your career.

It is RIDICULOUS that Joker and Co. said Newton was a whole new quarterback.  If by “whole new quarterback”, you meant the “exact same quarterback”, then I might have just misunderstood.  What is clear is that Joker and Co. knew what they had and tried to pull the wool over the fans eyes.  Consider that myth debunked.

It is RIDICULOUS that the play-calling is that conservative.  Consider this stat: Kentucky used a rushing play on the first play of a drive in 12 of 14 drives last night.  That includes EVERY SINGLE DRIVE in the 2nd half.  When you have absolutely no variety in your playcalling, even average teams like WKU eat that up.  By the way, those 12 rushing attempts when for a big ‘ol 14 yards.  Well done.

It is RIDICULOUS fans think Ryan Mossakowski would have been the answer.  Look here fans, Ryan Mossakowski had 2 years to try and surpass Morgan Newton on the depth chart.  He didn’t.  Plus he had a bum shoulder.  It’s always easy to act like the guy we never saw was going to be great.  Remember he was a 4-star QB.  You know who else was a 4-star?  Newton.  Mossakowski had a shot.  It was called practice.

It is RIDICULOUS that the late hits continue to happen.  In Game 1 of his career, Ridge Wilson had a severe late hit against Louisville.  In Game 14 of his career, he has another late hit.  That is a mental, concentration, and discipline problem.  Not to mention there were 3 (by my count) other instances where UK could have been flagged for late hits.

-But most of all, it is RIDICULOUS that as a fan in Year 2 of the Joker era, I feel like we are back to Year 1 of the Rich Brooks era.  I hope I am wrong, but what was built up by Brooks seems to be flaking away.

Come on, Newton didnt’ look that bad. He threw the ball nice downfield, and he showed some speed that I have never seen. All in all, he showed some glimpses to look forward to. Give him a break, if this is week 7, and he throws the same picks, then you have some ground.

I agree, we need an agressive approach on offense like we now have on D. Joker and Co. have truly been running the show for three seasons and UK has turned around and ran backwards. Last night it was the same old scared play calling they have had now for 3 years and guess what IT STILL SUCKS! Unless they somehow come up with a way not to suck so bad, Barny should pull the plug on this crap and start over.

Don’t judge too early BTI, it’s ridiculous. I agree on the play calling point however because we have had god knows how many years of Joker Offense. BTW I’m 97% correct at calling what offensive play Joker will call before the snap…over the past 3 years. I was nearly correct on every play yesterday except for the play Newton was supposed to throw a quick screen but instead threw it deep(ish);I called a quick screen.

That being said, I don’t think Newton had a terrible game. His receivers sucked it up and dropped a ton of well thrown passes that could have really improved Newton’s confidence. If he still sucks it up and the receivers catch passes, then I’ll change my mind.

I know that everyone is on Newton and he did make several poor passes but he also made several nice ones and the recievers just dropped them. He probably would have had over 200+ yards passing if it wasn’t for that.

I’d put those recievers in front of a machine and just fire footballs at them all practice until they caught at least 100 in a row without dropping them.

If King catches the long ball down the sideline and other receivers hold on to some catchable balls, the numbers look better and the WKU defense is a little looser on the line to open up holes for the running game. Lets get back on schedule and the coaches watch some tape. Good news there is plenty of room for improvement.

Not sure play calling is to blame. When the QB can’t complete a pass, the WR can’t catch when he does throw a good pass, and the OL can’t give him time OR open holes to run through, what play do you call? We tried a reverse on one series and everyone complained about that, so what do you want? When no one is executing, it doesn’t matter what plays you call. I am just beyond depressed.

WKU was in the back field so often that Newton damn near handed it to them on several plays. We were told that the O-line was going to be one of our strengths….at what? Being so soft that guys will be in the backfield before the back has a chance to be handed the ball? The Defense will be able to tackle Newton before he takes the nessesary steps back to throw the ball? After last night I thought we’d dominate the line and Newton would throw for at least 300 yards, and the backs would tack on another 200. If somethinng is corrected AND soon, those two stats will be for the whole damn season….C’mon Joker, you’re being paid to coach and get this team ready. Show some fire on the sidelines….Your name is Joker Phillips Not Tony Grundgy.

Newton needs to stop caving under pressure and needs some decent agility. The biggest disappointment I saw last night was the dropped passes. Newton put several passes into Larod King’s hands and he dropped them. Isn’t this the guy who’s mother sent hate mail because she though he needed more playing time? Well, this is why he didn’t get it.

See what BSU does to UGa this weekend…then get back to me and tell me and the rest of the country why we should continue to act like we’re a power football school when we don’t have and can’t recruit the players to play that way.

The UK football team deserves better treatment from the fans. If you knew how hard they all worked during the offseason you would not be dogging them as much. The defense looked great and everyone keeps forgetting that.

Yes…I will agree with everyone that Morgan Newton looked terrible. I actually miss Shane Boyd and that is saying something. But you can’t write off a 4-star recruit for a bad night. Give him some time to manage a football game.

The point of my post is to say to everyone….back off the edge of the cliff and remember we are 1-0. As crappy as our offense was we gave up 3 points to the better team last night.

its funny but #40 said “UK was outcoached, outhustled and outplayed”. It says alot about a team when they get outcoached outhustled and outplayed and they still win the game. UK looked terrible last night. Nothing worked. and they couldn’t do anything. Newton looked bad. WR’s are a major weakness for this team. The D played great. But still some work to be do on that side. Lets see what happens the next 2 weeks before we say the season is lost. Remember this, This will take time we lost our best QB, RB, and top two WRs including the 2nd best football player in the sec last year. Nobody losses that many offensive players and just keeps rolling. Settle down, wait till after week 3 to jump off the cliff.

Told you last spring it was time to hire a real coach and it will be another wasted year. I guess Joker inherited the job cause I know of nothing that even hinted he was ready. Championships???

I miss Mossakowski. If Newton keeps this up Joker has to give the freshman a chance. I don’t want to hear the excuse “he’s a freshman and he’ll struggle in the game…” That may be so that he won’t come out and complete 70% and throw for over 300 yards but he can’t do much worse than 3 picks and a BIG total of less than 100 yards of passing

Even Western has 2 and 3 star recruits. If you gets more than one 4 or 5 star recruit it is considered one of their best recruiting years ever. Until the recruiting picks up UK is going to battle Vandy for fifth in the East. It may take a big name coach to attract more top recruits. Name on top ten team at the end of last year that had as few 4 and 5 star players as UK. If basketball depended almost entirely on 2 and 3 star players we would be battling for fifth place in the East. Recruiting is he problem.

If UK basketball depended almost entirely on 2 and 3 star recruits we would be lucky to not finish last or next to last annually like we do in football. No, 4 and 5 star recruits don’t always lead to a championship but when have you seen a team with hardly any 4 or 5 star recruits win a championship in football. Recruiting is our problem. It may take a big name coach to attract the players that will at least get us into the top half of the conference in football.

Much like Will Fidler, Ryan Mossakowski did not get a chance to show us what he could do on the field. I hope Morgan is a great QB, I LOVE UK Football. I feel that Moss did not get a fair shake. And Have you saw the Britt kid for Russell Co. run? He may be a STUD!

Joker was a mistake, it will take years to get rid of him. He can’t coach, can’t call plays, can’t recruit, can’t inspire his players, can’t take UK to a higher level!!! Get used to mediocrity and subpar UK teams as long as he is here….Oh yeah, you can forget Bowl Games too, and the fact he discussed Championships leads me to think he needs to be drug tested!!!!

    CHAMPIONSHIPS??? OF WHAT???
