BTI’s Rants and Ramblings: That UL Sugar Bowl win for UL has done what again?

In 2012, after finishing 7-6 with a bowl loss to NC State, UL head coach Charlie Strong turned that “rousing” season into a recruiting class that ranked 42nd in the country.  That class included 3 4-star players, 13 3-star players, and 6 2-star players.  For comparison’s sake, Joker Phillips recruited the 31st ranked class in the country that year.

But then it all changed last year.  UK went 2-10 and Louisville went to the Sugar Bowl and beat national power Florida.  BOOM!  Louisville had arrived on the scene big time.  Charlie Strong has that program rolling at an incredible rate now, right?  Well, I’m not one to miss an opportunity to take a shot at the little brother, so I can say with very little hesitation that Charlie Strong may have done the worst job in the country at turning big success into recruiting success.  And I think we can all admit that the only way to keep a program sustainable for many years is on the recruiting trail.

So, how exactly has Charlie Strong used that Sugar Bowl win?  Let’s first take a look at the Class of 2013, or better known as the incoming freshman for this season.

2013 Recruiting Numbers
UK (39th ranked class): 3 4-stars, 14 3-stars, 6 2-stars
UL (50th ranked class): 1 5-star, 1 4-star, 12 3-stars, 3 2-stars

Somehow, the combined recruiting efforts of Joker Phillips and Mark Stoops, which usually spells disaster for a recruiting class, was able to produce a better class than Charlie Strong coming off a Sugar Bowl win.  And who was the 5-star player?  James Quick out of Louisville Trinity, who many say was likely headed to Louisville anyway.  And even if the Sugar Bowl did sway his decision, he’s a wide receiver.  Which is not the impact position that a QB or RB is in college.

But hey, some might argue that much of the recruiting for the Class of 2013 was down before that Sugar Bowl win and thus it is really the Class of 2014 where that win will show up.  OK, I think that might be a fair point.  So, let’s take a walk into the current Class of 2014 recruiting rankings to find that dynamite UL class.

2014 Recruiting Numbers
UK (18th ranked class): 2 4-stars, 7 3-stars, 3 2-stars
UL (22nd ranked class): 1 4-star, 13 3-stars, 1 2-star

First things first.  How in the hell following a 2-10 season can Mark Stoops be out-recruiting Charlie Strong right now?  I’ll give Stoops all the credit in the world for doing what he is doing, but we also should be shining a light on Charlie Strong as well.  He turned the biggest win in that school’s history into the same recruiting standard that Steve Kragthorpe set out.  14 of his 15 current commits are 3-stars and below.  In 2013, 15 of his 17 recruits were 3-stars and below.  Trust me, that class will not be ranked 22nd when it’s all said and done if he loads up on 3-stars like he is.

So, what is the point?  The point is Mark Stoops has a window to gain back this rivalry in the near future.  He is already recruiting at a higher level than strong.  Put 2 or 3 consecutive classes together better than UL and you are back in business.  Charlie Strong should have been able to gather a 5-year stranglehold on this rivalry following that win and likely good season this year.  Instead, he turned it into Kragthorpe.  So I hope everybody gets a nice laugh at that missed opportunity and sees the potential for UK to gain back this rivalry shortly.

Blows my mind Chuck left the SEC. Worst mistake he made. I feel bad for him though. Right after he leaves the SEC the UK,Vandy,Tenn,Auburn and Arkansas jobs go up for grabs. Poor Chuck is being strung around by Jurich and Pitino. Joined the Big East which was a dying conference only to leave and be and headed to the ACC which is better but also a dying conference all because that’s what Rick wants and Jurich cant tell him no.

Unfortunately for UK, on the field success is a bit more important than Recruiting class rankings. But I guess moral victories are better than BCS bowls right? And I’m not sure what ranking the genius known as BTI used for the 2014 class rankings, but UL is ranked ahead of UK by Rivals, Scout, and ESPN as of right now…

It’s funny how uk constantly has to try to hate on Louisville on ksr. Uk needs to worry about its own football brand. Truthfully, uk ul rivalry will probably end in football because of uk s inablitity to even split games in the series with ul. Uk has a huge advantage being in the sec but still has failed to create a better football brand than ul. Uk offseason hype and recruiting is all smoke and mirrors until there is an actually quality product on the field which in my opinion pretty doubtful. I have followed both programs closely for 20 years and uk has never been anything to fear on the football field. Uk football has honestly been a joke the majority of my life. To act like Louisville s football program is not a far better brand than uk is just ignorant.

Do you want to know why the recruiting classes for UL were lackluster as you say? Because they have so much YOUNG TALENT that is still developing, which means less chance for a freshman to come in and play right away. So they are getting a few studs and then some good players to DEVELOP over the long term.

Conversely, UK has NO TALENT and has plenty of playing time available to incoming freshman. See what the difference is? The way you spun this is disingenuous and downright stupid. If UK had any kind of returning talent, then these recruits would have much less chance of immediate playing time, and so they go to a good program like LSU or BAMA to improve there first two years behind some real players and then get their chance as Juniors and Seniors.

To think that UK will be able to sustain this recruiting is laughable. Please write it down and come back to me in 3 years.

Also, saying that Charlie Strong “turned it into Kragthorpe” is laughable. I applaud you for your bias. I don’t recall Kragthorpe beating Florida for the Sugar Bowl or recruiting arguably the best QB in NCAA football to come to UL.

When was the last time UK beat Florida in football? Oh yeah, that was 1986 – playing every freaking year. Please go home, you’re drunk.

5–To be honest neither team really has a football “brand” at all. Both programs have been up and down as long as I can remember. Now in my lifetime UL’s ups have been greater than UK’s but UL still doesn’t necessarily have a “brand”. Teams with a “brand” would be Texas,USC,Alabama,Notre Dame etc. What gets me with UL fans is they live in an imaginary world where they feel like they’re right up there with those schools in football. You’re not. There are no large Louisville fan bases outside of Louisville. I’m not sure what “brand” you believe Louisville has because there isn’t one and unless UL heads to the SEC,Big 10 or Big 12 there will never be a brand. Louisville fans are ridiculous sometimes and I just wish you all would admit you’re a little delusional sometimes. JUST OWN IT!

    6. I don’t think BTI suggested that U of L didn’t have a lot more talent than UK does right now. Just pointed out that Stoops is arguably doing a better job recruiting than Strong is at the moment, which says a lot for the future. And this is a UK fan blog, so don’t be shocked if a writer looks at statistics with a slant favorable to UK.

    UL – 9th

So when you say “so I can say with very little hesitation that Charlie Strong may have done the worst job in the country at turning big success into recruiting success”, I begin to wonder about you.

How bout the fact that Oregon finished 12-1 with a Fiesta Bowl win, and currently has the 39th ranked class?

9- I never compared Louisville to Texas use nd etc. You were the one who compared ul to them in your comment. This is between UL and Uk so don’t make an argument like your a Texas or USC fan cause your not. You are a blue smurf fan. Im not ignorant and believe we are comparable to those programs many decades of tradition. Also Louisville football has not really been up and down for the majority of the last 20 years we have been up with many bowl games and a winning record against uk in the modern series. What you must understand is UL has continued to progress their program forward by moving to stronger conferences and improving facilities. Where as, uk has definitely been known as a losing program for the majority of the modern era. So yes we do have a much better brand than uk has in football. Uk is known as the basement of the sec. Where as, Louisville is regarding as an up and coming program with great coaches and facilities. You ll get to see our brand this year in commonwealth hope you enjoy.

  24. One Bowl win is overrated
    9:56 am June 7, 2013 Permalink

Beating a disinterested Florida team in a bowl game is just one game. UK beat the No. 1 team in the country in 2007. 4 years and a coaching change later they aren’t bowl eligible. Stop pretending Ul is now a perennial top 10 program. It isn’t. It’s a program similar to UK with a better record because they don’t play the same caliber schedule. Which should embarrass UK who has more resources and a bigger fan base. Anyway, if Stoops & Co. can coach like they can recruit not only do I think UK is going to win its fair share against Ul in the future, it could win the game this year.

6- It doesn’t matter if you are young, the name of the game in college football recruiting is stock piling talent. Look at Bama, They are very young on defense, yet 7 of their 9 are defensive guys. Look at the 2013 class…11 are defensive guys….that’s because if you wanna play and remain with the big boys, you bring them in and redshirt them. Give them a year to get their bodies where they want, learn the system, so when you put them out there as RS Fresh, they play like Jr’s. VERY FEW HS football players have the body and maturity to come into the SEC and play immediately. Very Few.

The only reason UofL class is rated ahead of UK’s right now is due to number of commits. But anyone with a brain can look at the two classes currently and see that UofL is not recruiting like a team that just won the Sugar Bowl. Recruiting has not been the same for Uofl since Clint Hurt ran out of his players he was connected with when he recruited for Miami. You go back and look at Clint Hurt’s recruiting only. His first two years he did awesome with highly rated Miami area players. That has no been the case over the past couple years. UofL will be awesome this year. I would be lying to say otherwise. They have a very special player in Teddy Bridgewater. I think he can be the first quarterback selected in the next year’s draft. But lets not forget the games he didn’t play in or those in which he was hurt last year. UofL looked like a different team. I know you will say that every team would look bad without there quarterback. UofL looked night and day. UofL runs up and down the field on Florida with a healthy Teddy. When he was hurt or not playing they struggled against very weak teams. Therefore enjoy this year Card fans. Charlie knows his team and his situation. I would be very surprised if he didn’t take a job next year if someone offers. I personally think he is thinking that this will be Muschamps last year in Gainesville. Let’s remember Tennessee is not the job it once was. They struggle with the same thing we do. In that they have to go out of state to recruit for the most part. He knows that Tennessee probably wouldn’t of let him bring in Clint Hurt. Although I don’t think he would help much anyways. He had about two classes worth of dirty relationships built up when he came from Miami. He has ran out of dirty connections.

Look UofL has been a nice little run this past couple years. No doubt. But even in Basketball I see long term problems as far as being a elite team. Rich got lucky that he got a three star palyer in Russ that developed into something special on the college level. What was really nice about it for UofL was that he was to short to go to the NBA. The same for Siva. That is why he stayed until he was a senior. That don’t happen very often. Rick’s recruiting is not where it needs to be to be a national contender every year. He got lucky with some players that developed into stars. You can’t make a living on that. It will eventually catch up to him. It almost had before the emergence of Russ and the fact that both him and Siva were to small to go to the NBA. I guess UofL fans would say that they stayed because they loved college. Don’t kid yourself. They stayed because there draft stock was low. That doesn’t happen often with players that are with their skill set in the college game.

With Cal’s recruiting and Stoops emergence of recruiting I would invest in the Kentucky stock going forward.

UL had a month to prep for Florida. Could they do the same with only a week? And playing Alabama the week before and South Carolina the week after?

@55 UK had 10 months to prepare for UofL and 26 years to prepare for Florida. You have no valid qualifiers.

The biggest news for UofL recruiting is the move to the ACC. For a long time the rumored demise of the Big East affected UofL negatively. Once we are in the ACC we will be recruiting a lot better and UK knows this. This is why they went and hired a new coach and went HAM to upgrade their crappy stadium.

P.S. Why was Mark Stoops given all those new facilities in the first when Joker was given nothing after many years on stall and former head coaches told you the facilities were a big issue? Was it that Joker is black or is it that Red n Black down the road were getting too good?

What will happen first? UK finishing in the top 3 of the SEC East or beating Florida in football?

Here’s what I’m going to say. The #1 recruiting class in the Nation last year lost in the first round to Robert Morris in the NIT. What that says about recruit ranking is that you can’t teach heart or determination. I think that what separates a 5 star athlete from a 4 star athlete from a 3 star athlete comes down to an opinion a talent scout gives to a highlight reel. Mark Stoops is a great recruiter and APPEARS to be a great coach and so is Charlie Strong. Kentucky is going to get their butts handed to them early in the season this year no matter who they recruit because freshmen don’t win big games in football. What they do, however, is learn and improve and become leaders. Stoops is finding leaders and hungry recruits. As for Louisville not capitalizing on the Sugar Bowl win, I have the same concern as a Card Fan, but I also realize that if the coaching staff at Louisville thinks a recruit is undervalued and they see something others do not then Louisville gets better. That’s happening at Kentucky too. Stoops is a talent evaluator and these lwoer ranked guys hes getting are tough as nails players who will build your program.

This is what happens when Louisville doesn’t have Clint Hurtt to do the recruiting. He’s been on administrative leave since end of March due to his part in alleged Miama recruiting scandal. He apparently hadn’t been as effective for awhile before that either due to the Miami recruiting rumors. Wonder what UofL would be like if Hurtt had never come to Louisville. Didn’t he bring Bridgewater to UofL?

Just to show how arbitrary this recruitng thing is, Rivals has Louisville #9 in the country and Kentucky #13.

Espn has Louisville ranked 19 and Kentucky 23.

If your team is in the top 50, it should be able to win games.

See #5, it’s all about perspective. You think there is way too much UofL hate on KSR and others of us (me and most of the people I care about) think there has been far too much UofL/Pitino love since the championship. No win situation.

  68. Seriously?
    12:50 pm June 7, 2013 Permalink

The journalistic integrity at KSR is laughable, at best. The article is misinformed and downright ignorant. Louisville has an undeniable plethora of young talent. That makes it a bit tougher to recruit than “Come getcha some immediate playing time in the SEC.”. Stoops has to keep this up. One, two, three recruiting classes don’t make a program. If he can’t compete in the SEC, kids aren’t going to answer the phone. But this is mostly blatantly ignorance because Louisville’s on-field success in the last decade, even including the Kragthorpe years for which there was no success, more-than overshadows anything Kentucky has quite literally ever done on the gridiron.

You cayuts need to consider how many great recruiting classes in succession comprised the roster than Bridgewater & Co. abused in the Sugar Bowl. It’s a lot better than Mark Stoops’.

Anything UL does is just more fuel to their delusion. If UL is so great at whatever, then why did no conference want you? Why did it take Maryland leaving to finally give UL a chance, and even then UL was the last cleanest dirtiest shirt left. No matter what UL does, no one outside the city limits cares. Now that UL has to play real teams in both football & basketball, UL fans are going to get to experience reality.

@55 – “UL had a month to prep for Florida.” Well guess what, darlin’, UF had the exact same amount of time to prep for UL. That’s math. And their QB wasn’t recovering from a broken arm and sprained ankle.

Also, It is very tiresome to hear UK always using their SEC “trump” card when comparing to UL (Big East or ACC). Gotta say though, I’d much rather be a big fish in a smaller pond then be the smallest, crappiest fish in the big pond. Do you actually think that just because Stoops is recruiting well (no argument on this one, he is) right now that it can actually close the gap between the powerhouses in the SEC? I’m extremely skeptical. So while, UK treads water at the bottom rung of the SEC, UL will continue to play high calibre football and place itself in position to have a chance at the national championship, a dream which UK, players and fans alike, will just have to stand on the sidelines and watch with a frown on their faces. Facts is facts.

I am a die hard UK fan beginning with Claiborne (I was 8 his first season) and I’m sorry but only Jeff Sagarin recognized the 50-51 team as a national champion. True we were ranked 5th in the AP with only a loss to UT and we then beat #1 Oklahoma in the Sugar Bowl, but Oklahoma and UT were the real recognized national champs. I still like to claim it to get under the skin of pompous UL fans my age, who forget about getting free tix to old cardinal stadium for perfect attendance in grade/middle school, but it’s simply a stretch at best.

Funny thing to me is the argument that Charlie already has so many young players to develop he can’t get/doesn’t go after a higher ranked class of kid. So by that rational Bama, OSU, ND, UF etc won’t have top 15 classes because they also have too much young talent and kids won’t sign with them either?

Phew, I thought we were in big trouble. #1 recruiting class here we come!

UK gets the benefit of being terrible and telling young high school kids they can start as freshmen in the SEC. It’s not so much stoops, it’s the situation. KY has two advantages. Playing in the SEC and losing most games – turns into a great recruiting tool. The other advantage is that this advantage will remain – meaning, playing in the SEC and always losing. So you can almost look at it like a perpetual motion machine.

Let’s play a game. Let’s pretend UK can get their crap together early enough to beat WKU and Ohio U.

Let’s also pretend that UK does not completely embarrass themselves as they lose to UofL.

It was at about this time last year that you all started talking about how great a basketball team you were going to have. Who is really the delusional fan base?

Now, continuing to play the game, we pretend that after losing to Florida, SC, Alabama and MSU, that you still have enough players healthy enough to beat Alabama State. If ALL of this happens (and I’m afraid our friend Mr. Bobby Petrino may have some say in it), UK could very well have a “break-out” 3-9 season! Good luck!

You pUKe fans are incredibly blind. Your hatred for Louisville only makes your insecurities & self- esteem issues all the more evident. At Louisville we believe in winning at EVERY sport. We’re not just a “one and done” school. Do whatever you have to do to make yourselves feel better. Your “twins are coming” and you can wear those shirts around like a bunch of mind- numb, backwoods Kool-Aid drinkers. Coach “Conapari” will talk later to boost your morale. I really can’t help but feel sorry for you guys. We are Louisville & that is more than enough. We don’t loose sleep over anything the Mildcats do. Grow up guys! Don’t be so foolish Cat fans…really!
