BTI’s Rants and Ramblings: Storming the Court, Could it Happen at UK?

Interesting talk broke out in the Clear Channel offices last week about storming the court in college basketball after Indiana students and fans flooded the court after beating 20th ranked Illinois.  Those in the office tried to dig deep into our minds to think of a time that Kentucky fans had done such a thing.  I know I couldn’t remember a time, and nobody else could.  Somebody mentioned that they remember it happening at Memorial in the 1960’s, but couldn’t remember the game.

So, going under the assumption that fans have never stormed the court at a UK game in the modern era, the discussion quickly moved to what it would take for something like that to happen.  And generally, 2 lines of thought were discussed:

-Some argue that you can’t storm the court without beating a great opponent in an upset OR with a buzzer beater over a top opponent.  In Kentucky’s case, it’s rare that they are big underdogs at home.  Since moving to Rupp Arena, Kentucky has beaten 5 teams ranked in the Top 3 at the time of the game.  Here are those instances, with Kentucky’s ranking in parentheses:

1979: Beat #1 Indiana (UK #5)
2003: Beat #1 Florida (UK #6)
1981: Beat #2 LSU (UK #9)
1998: Beat #2 Maryland (UK #5)
2008: Beat #3 Tennessee (UK Unranked)

Only the game in 2008 was Kentucky not in the Top 10.  And I don’t remember there being a huge push to rush the floor in that game.  Because UK has been ranked in the Top 20 for most weeks over the last 20 years, they just don’t have the shock and awe of winning a game at home that teams like Indiana or Penn State or Iowa State have.  I mean really, how often have you been really SURPRISED that Kentucky won a game at Rupp Arena?

Some would argue that it not only is the opponent who must be right, but there must also be an exciting finish as well.  To me, this argument is crushed pretty easily with 1 game:

1987: Kentucky beats Louisville with tip-in at the buzzer

Kentucky beats its most heated rival with a buzzer beating tip-in, and if I remember correctly, fans did not storm the floor there.  Of course, Louisville was unranked that day and Kentucky was ranked #1, which brings me to the 2nd school of thought of what it would take:

Some have argued that Indiana has dropped so far, even beating a team like 20th ranked Illinois was enough to storm the floor.  That’s why at places like Duke, they seem to storm the field with every football win.  When a crappy program pulls an upset, the pure emotion of that leads to floor storming.  And because Kentucky has not dropped the level of Indiana, even during probation, that is why fans don’t storm.  If Kentucky put together 3-4 straight years of sub-.500 play, then maybe a win over a Top 25 team would change that.  I disagree, but some in the sports office argued that.

Since coming off probation in 1992, Kentucky has never been so down as the last 2 years of Tubby Smith and the 2 years Billy Gillispie.  In that 4-year stretch, Kentucky only beat 3 ranked teams at home:

Beat #3 Tennessee in 2008
Beat #4 Louisville in 2005
Beat #13 Vanderbilt in 2008

Did we consider storming the floor then?  I don’t think so.  Then, following that 4 year stretch of sub-par play, Kentucky beat 10th ranked North Carolina at home early last season, with a close ending, and nobody ran onto the floor afterwards.  So, just how bad does it have to get at Kentucky before it would be acceptable to flood the court?

we stormed the court after the LSU win in ’81 or ’82. I have pics of Al Mcquire and Billy Packer taken from the court after the game. Not an all-out storming like IU, have to remember there was no student courtside seating then.

I somehow got to the front row of the student section (despite going to the other little school on Broadway) during the UK-Florida game in 2003 when Florida was #1 and Kentucky absolutely destroyed them. There were halfhearted talks of storming the court, but the state troopers lined up in front of everyone put a pretty quick end to whatever talks that may have been ongoing by threatening everyone with going to jail. At that point everyone decided that it was definitely below UK to storm the court.

However there are some victories that could warrant storming the court: It would be acceptable after beating:

    -the 1992 Dream Team

the lower arena folks (excluding Erupption zone, students) would have to wake up first, b4 storming. Assuming they didn’t leave early to beat traffic…they don’t stand up, yell, cheer, support the Cats – so why would they storm?

I totally agree with #1. UK should NEVER storm the floor after a win over anyone. We EXPECT to win, no matter what our ranking is. I think Football should only storm the field if they can beat Bama, UT, UF, or LSU. Storming after beating anyone else signifies that you don’t believe you can ever get on their level. I was at the SC game this year. I was 16 rows from the field. I did not storm the field. UK fans who did were foolish to do so. To some it was a W over Spurrier. To knowledgable fans, it was a win over a SC team that UK should always beat at home.
Being an Oklahoma football fan as well I could use these to programs as parallels. OU should never storm in football and UK should never in basketball. It’s “below” both.

I can think of only one possible scenario where it MIGHT be acceptable to storm the court, and that’s if the NCAA would ever let the home team play on their own floor in a Regional. IF the 1998 Regional Final against Dook had been played at Rupp Arena, I believe the combination of the huge 2nd half comeback, the fact that UK was the underdog, and the fact that it was the hated Blow Devils we came back against to earn a spot in the Final Four would have seen at least the student section rushing the floor. Any other scenario would be unacceptable.

Storming the court reeks of mediocrity. I think it’d be merited only if UK wins the championship game. I suppose I could see it happening if UK makes an epic comeback (imagine if the LSU comeback were at home) against a too ranked rival, but even then I’d prefer if it didn’t happen.

It would have been very bad form if fans rushed the court in the 2003 win over Florida. We were the better team both that year and in recent history, so it would have been completely uncalled for.

Of those 3 games, the Maryland win in 98 was the one that I remember being the most exciting and craziest atmosphere I can remember experiencing in Rupp and still I don’t think that anyone considered rushing the court. As it has been said… We are Kentucky. We have beaten all those teams before and will do so again at some time in the future. Regardless of the difference in ranking or the critical nature of the game, we should expect to at least have a chance to win and thus should never be in a position to rush the court.

I don’t care if we are in year 10 of 10 consecutive years of probation, have no players higher than a 2-star rating, and upset the #1 team in the nation on their home court… As fans we should have the mentality that we deserve to win EVERY game we play in, no matter what the circumstances.

UL fans and trolls-I was curious how it felt to go from beating UCONN to loosing to Georgetown. It Must suck to be on that emotional roller coaster Rick has taken you on this last year. I would be so pissed off right now if I was a card fan. Tired of loosing to UK. Sick of the joke we have become. But I know I wouldn’t be spending my time with UK fans on their message boards. That’s a sad deal you got going there.

UK fans should not rush the court. Not because we are above it. But because we are supposed to win our home games.

NEVER!! UK is UK. The best of all-time. Storming the court is below us. The younger generation of fans need to stop with this foolishness. If UK fans ever storm the court, it will be a bunch of 17 year olds who know NOTHING about the tradition and legacy of UK Basketball.

No matter the situation, no matter who we beat, no matter how “down” our year, no matter how far behind we are late in a game it will NEVER EVER suprise BBN that we won….not enough to storm the floor against anybody for any game.
That said….we could easily destroy some goal posts out on Nicholasville Road.

we should only rush the court, if its for a national championship on our own Rupp Arena floor. Since that is almost never going to happen, we should never rush the floor no matter what!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I don’t believe storming the court at Rupp will ever happen, no matter the situation, solely based on the fact that the majority of the lower arena is filled with people of an older generation. Most of our student section is seated in the upper arena, unlike a lot of other major basketball schools. So, even if our students were WANTING to storm the court, it would be near impossible… and I’m sure those that DID manage would be scoffed at by some old farts who paid for their prime seats.

#8. I was a student at UK during both 81-82 and usually sat in Section 31-32 when students actually had some half-way decent seats. There was no court storming against LSU or any other team during the time I was there. If there had been, I would have joined the party….but I can assure you, no one stormed anything.

#24 – I vividly remember Louisville fans storming the field after beating Rutgers in the last game of the season in Kragthorpe’s first or second year. They were down big at half and the vast majority of Louisville’s fairweather fan base was gone, so the crowd that did the storming was small.

I dreamed this a while back. We were down 21 points to Duke and we only had 4 players left playing after some getting hurt and some fouling out with five minutes to play. The NCAA had the quickest ruling of all time and allowed Enes to go to the locker, get dressed and play. Long story short, we scored 22 straight points with a last second Enes dunk, shattering the backboard………..We rushed the court then! I woke up sweating 🙂

No. We expect to win every game. People storm when they are lucky enough to beat us, not the other way around.

    2:28 pm February 1, 2011 Permalink

I agree with 107. That would be pretty weird for us to claim that we are the greatest tradition in the history of college basketball then 40 mins later we all run around flapping our arms on the court because we beat someone. It’s just stupid and yes you could even say it’s below us. Besides, who’s going to rush the court? Joe B. Hall and 10,000 old people? The E-Zone is guarded by security and the other big student section is two stories up. Games where people storm the court usually have thousands of students already sitting around the entire court.

    1. Playing Duke at Rupp;
    2. Duke #1, undefeated and considered a threat to go undefeated for the year.
    3. UK outside the top 10, and;
    4. Buzzer beater

The only situation that UK fans would maybe consider rushing the floor would be winning the National Championship. By the way, the only reason that would happen is that the BLUE HAIRS wouldnt be in the path to the floor.

I havent been to a UK game since the Pitino era, but.. even then the atmosphere at RUMP arena is far from exciting. Too many OLD FARTS in the lower arena they most likely would pop a hernia if they jumped outta their seat on a TERRANCE JONES JAM. UK basketball is a great but RUPP arena crowds for the most part cant hold a light to other less than storied programs when it comes to team spirit.

Not Likely, I don’t think anyone realizes the number of old people who would be trampled in their seats if fans tried to get over them to get to the floor. We would have at least 3 deaths related to young fans being stabbed with canes and/or walkers…

I don’t think we should ever do it either…but I’m telling you…a last second buzzer beating 3 pointer to beat Louisville or Duke would bring the Erupption zone out to the floor..maybe not a sea of people like at some other schools..but I think they would come out onto the floor around the players. They are kids after all.

no freaking way Rupp gets stormed. It has always puzzled me why big-name programs do that, like west virginia did a couple weeks ago after beating Purdue. yes, a Big East team stormed their court after beating Purdue. that just screams to me, “we know we’re not as good of a program as you are.” and we all know that Kentucky fans will never feel that way about someone else
