BTI’s Rants and Ramblings: SEC Rosters by Recruiting Rankings

Anthony Grant, 2nd best SEC recruiter?

Recruiting rankings don’t tell everything, as evidenced by the fact that Butler and VCU made the Final Four this past season.  But I think UK fans have a special place in our hearts for the rankings because we saw what 3-star players did at the end of Tubby Smith era compared to what 5-star players have done under Calipari.  While they don’t tell the whole story, they do tell you something.  So, just who in the SEC has the best roster (besides Kentucky) if you just added up their recruiting rankings.  I was surprised at the answer.  I used scout.com for this ranking, and often times junior college transfers, like Eloy Vargas, are not given a star ranking.  Also, players in italics transferred to the school.

Using Rivals would have been better. Had Lamb a 5star which would have been more accurate.

    5+5+5+5+5+4+4+4+4=41

41/9=4.55 (assuming you are rounding to two decimal places, which you did elsewhere in the post).

Lamb was a 5 star under rivals. And some of those players at Bama dont count as Grant recruits, like Green. He was already there.

Why no love for Beckham? Because he’s a walk-on? He, along with Polson, deserve to be considered part of the roster.

Yeah Lamb was a 5 star per Rivals and he was also a McDonalds All American.

Why do you include all 10-12 players on the other SEC schools, but only 9 for KY?

Be accurate and do them all if you are going to make a post like this.

    10) “It’s not the difficult”? Not sure that makes sense.

Secondly, what player am I missing? Polson and Beckham are walk-ons. They didnt have a recruiting ranking. I didnt include the walk-ons on any of the other teams.

Not trying to start something here but Tubby’s last two years were chalked full of superstar high schoolers who were complete duds. Tubby did more with 3 star player than 98% of coaches could do with 4 and 5 stars. That being said I am very happy to be where we are right now.

  15. what
    9:43 am May 27, 2011 Permalink

BTI, I believe the stats are distorted. Different amounts of players can make a huge difference. It is completely obvious by looking that FL has a better roster than Alabama, but since they have one more player in the average their average rating is brought down. If the 2-star was a walk-on it would have easily made them jump aheadm of AL. I used to take up for you, but now I feel like your doing it on purpose.

  16. Bryan the Intern

    15) Doing what on purpose? Giving accurate stats? If that is the case, then yes I am giving accurate stats on purpose.

Wilbekin from Florida played well everytime I saw UF play… two star or not he was solid for a freshmen. Glad to see Grant have success too, he seems like a classy guy. But we must still crush them this year.

You guys really are absolutely ridiculous. If you don’t like what BTI has to say, then don’t read it. If you think that you would write better articles and give us better information, start your own blog and see how many people will critque everything you say. I can guarantee you that BTI has more sports knowledge (UK basketball especially) in his right pinky than a majority of you on this site. You’re all jokes and it makes me feel sorry to call myself a UK and associate myself with you jokes…..

I love the irony of BTI chastising someone for using improper English and writing something that he’s not sure “makes sense”. I’ve met 2 year olds with down syndrome who have a better grasp of proper English than BTI. You’re absolutely terrible.

These clowns would get run at the Y by that pale Ginger thug’s squad wearing the louisvile gear that’s 4X when he’s 5’11” 165. Louisvilles rankings should be done with bullet holes, not stars.

    32) Quit being so sensitive. It’s obvious that this was interesting to read but if you’re going to post numbers and stats, it shouldn’t be a problem with someone calling you out if they’re not accurate. This comes with the territory. Nobody said BTI doesn’t do good work.

I agree with some of the other posters, rivals rankings are a bit better then scout and include juco rankings. With that in mind it doesnt change alot but vargas was orig a 4 star on rivals, but a 3 as a juco, also lamb and lacey would both be 5 instead of 4. Pet peeve with scout

Sorry sent prematurely….pet peeve with scout was an undervalued ranking of eric bledsoe although they were prob closer then others in regards to stacey poole

11- Polson was on scholarship this year.

Anthony Grant maybe the best in game coach in the sec and mike Anderson will get the Ark back in national prominence. I forsee those two schools ( along the fla smaders ) contending with Uk for the SEC crown for the next few years. Uk will dominate the sec in 2011 but for once in the last decade the SEC will be one of the stronger conferences in the nation. Why is that good for us ???? It’s always good to be the best of the best

  44. B4UK8
    1:58 am May 28, 2011 Permalink

well i guess if you avg. the ranks it would look this way, and considering grant even got players like eric maynor to go to vcu, jamie skeen to leave wake forest for the rams, and what he has done for the tide, theres no question grant knows how to recruit. but in the sec i believe that billy donovan is the #2 recruiter, i mean look how many guys he has doin very well in the nba right now and although hes had some 5 stars the past couple classes have been down overall in comparison. and if you watch what patric young does this year being a starter and see what beal does it will solidify this arguement more so.
