BTI’s Rants and Ramblings: Raiding Michigan State (Plus more Hall of Fame nominations)

Before we get into today’s post, I have added two more Hall of Fame nominees into the running per request by the readers yesterday.  These guys will be on the poll starting next Monday.

JAI LUCAS-PATRICK PATTERSON

-Ask Matt why the website exploded, he is likely to bring these two guys up.  Sometimes I wonder if PPat hadn’t come to Lexington, would we even care about these guys, but it doesn’t matter because Patterson became a UK legend and Lucas became a KSR legend.  There is no way that individually these guys belong in the Hall but together they make an unstoppable duo.

THE DOOR

-If you don’t know what the door is, a Memphis TV station started broadcasting a door on its website in hopes that John Calipari would walk through it.  He never did, but for several days, the door became famous and the UK nation joined in on the watching while also amazed that there was another fanbase as crazy as us.

So again, these two new nominees will not be on the poll until next week when it refreshes.  This is last two nominees to be included no matter what anybody else gives.  There is always next year Pete Rose.

Now, as far as today’s post, I almost hate writing it because it is so ridiculous to even look at this.  But there was some chattering about the potential grabbing of Michigan State players if Tom Izzo left for Cleveland.  So, I thought we would look at the guys that Kentucky recruited who went to East Lansing instead.

Adrien Payne (Class of 2010)
5-star, 5th ranked center
Thoughts: Payne was down to Michigan State, Arizona, Kansas, Kentucky, and West Virginia, when he finally chose to go with Sparty.  At 6’10”, 210 pounds, Payne is versatile but would give Kentucky another big body.  Probably the most likely to bolt if Izzo does the same.

Russell Byrd (Class of 2010)
4-star, 19th ranked shooting guard
Thoughts: Had a scholarship offer from Kentucky before choosing Michigan State.  Also had offers from Indiana and Michigan.  Obviously a 6’7” shooting guard is going to give some teams some height problems.

Draymond Green (Class of 2008)
4-star, 26th ranked power forward
Thoughts: Green had a host of scholarship offers, although scout.com says that UK never offered, but were only recruiting him.  Green is a banger is the post, a hard nosed player who averaged 10ppg and 8rpg last season while shooting 52.5% from the field.  Considering he has had 2 productive seasons at Michigan State, unlikely he would leave.

Durrell Summers (Class of 2007)
5-star, 4th ranked shooting guard
Thoughts: Stupid for me to even put him on here, because he is not leaving Michigan State.  But, Kentucky was one of 5 schools to offer him a scholarship and certainly shooting may be a concern for UK.  We can all dream, can’t we?

Obviously, Green and Summers are nearly impossible to get because why would those guys leave Michigan State.  But, if Izzo leaves, Payne and Byrd may come back in play.  Coach Cal can work magic with his roster, and if those guys are forced to sit out a year, then maybe he can find a roster spot.  Take note that both players have signed a letter of intent with Michigan State, so there are some hoops to jump through.  But, if Izzo leaves, it will be interesting to see how much of his roster jumps ship and if Kentucky becomes involved.
