BTI’s Rants and Ramblings: Please Joker Phillips, Just Beat Tennessee Already

26 years.  Over a quarter of a century.  32.7% of the state’s population wasn’t born yet.  Most of us, myself included, don’t even know what we would do if we won.  Yet nearly all of us want this win more than any other.  Of course I am talking about football and the University of Tennessee.  November 24, 1984: Kentucky 17, Tennessee 12.  And for me, during the Phillip Fulmer and Peyton Manning years, it was a game that just could just mark down as a loss and not even get worked up about.  And some of the losses during the 1990’s reflect some of the players may have thought that too.  But, when Fulmer started to lose the grip on his program, and Rich Brooks made UK respectable, suddenly it looked like the streak would end in no time.  And then 2004, 2006, 2007, and 2009 happened.  All legit chances to beat Tennessee, all losses for Kentucky.

That’s why, for the 3rd straight year, I make this plea:  Goal #1 in this football season should be to beat the University of Tennessee in football.  THAT is the biggest game of the year.  Bigger than Louisville.  And bigger than any bowl game.  Think about it.  Would you rather have a win over UT and bowl loss OR another loss to UT and another Music City Bowl win?  For me, give me a bowl loss for a UT win this season.  That is not the case in most years, but frankly, I am just tired of this stinkin’ streak.  It has become THE embarrassment for this football program.

Just look at some of the staggering statistics, and keep in mind these will be difficult to look at

Games in Lexington (13 losses)
Combined Score: Tennessee 477, Kentucky 246
Average Score: Tennessee 37, Kentucky 18
Closest Games: 52-50 (2007), 24-22 (1987), 34-31 (1995)

Games in Knoxville (13 games)

14 QB’s have started against Tennessee during the 25 game streak
Bill Ransdell (1985, 1986)
Glenn Fohr (1987, 1988)
Freddie Maggard (1989, 1990)
Pookie Jones (1991, 1992, 1993)

Shane Boyd (2004)
Andre Woodson (2005, 2006, 2007)
Randall Cobb (2008)
Morgan Newton (2009)
Mike Hartline (2010)

UK has lost 10 games by less than 10 points during the 26 game streak
1987: 24-22
1988: 28-24
1991: 16-7
1995: 34-31
2001: 38-35
2004: 37-31
2006: 17-12
2007: 52-50
2009: 30-24
2010: 24-14

Kentucky has beaten these opponents since 1984
Vanderbilt: 16 times
Mississippi State: 10 times
Louisville: 8 times
South Carolina: 6 times
Georgia: 5 times

Since November 24th, 1984:
-Today marks the 9,748th day since that date
-5 US Presidents
-6 Kentucky Governors
-5 US Senators from Kentucky
-5 UK Presidents
-3 UK Athletic Directors

Other notable facts:
-23 consecutive football senior classes have now graduated without beating Tennessee
-Every SEC team has beaten Tennessee at least once since 1993
-UK has had 56 players drafted in the NFL since 1984
-UK has won 126 football games since November 1984
-Kentucky basketball has beaten Tennessee 44 times since November 1984
-Kentucky baseball has beaten Tennessee 30 times since November 1984

What’s the point of all this.  Well, its simple: IT IS TIME FOR THIS DAMN STREAK TO END.  I have never been more serious about saying this.  Tennessee is down, probably further down as they have ever been in the past 20 years.  They just changed coaching staffs completely last season, and used bar fights as their off-seasons workouts, while Kentucky used weightlifting.

I am OK with Lee Majors, Phil Fulmer, and even Lane Kiffin beating us, I will not accept Derek “Who the Hell Am I” Dooley.  If I have to step out on the ledge to say this, I will: I WILL TAKE A 1-11 SEASON IF THAT 1 WIN IS TENNESSEE.  Certainly I don’t wish that on the team, and that should not be a goal for Joker and the boys, but UT needs to be the MOST IMPORTANT game on the schedule every year until this streak is broken.

I agree, its time to end. I can’t think of anything more embarrasing, oh wait… VMI and Gardner Webb (but that was basketball). But I cry BALLSHIT on the “accept a 1-11 season” statement. We would have people sleeping on billboards in Lexington again…..

If we loose to UT and make it back to the final four in basketball… Who really gives a shit?

I hate this streak more than any other UK owns the two longest losing streaks in the country to a single team 1) UT 2) UF its embarrasing.

Honestly I would trade a win vs. Louisville if it meant UK would break this streak!!! Joker broke the South Carolina and SS streak last year here’s to breaking another one this year.

It’s the orange…that damn awful orange…it burns the retinas…plus, who else remembers the UT marching band playing “Rocky Top” during the UK Marching Band’s tribute to America during their halftime show a few years ago? Damn awful orange…

I agree with you, BTI. I live in Knoxville and not only is Kentucky considered a guaranteed win, Kentucky is a joke. They laugh about kentucky on the radio, on tv, in stores, in church. One business had a drawing where the winner, if Kentucky beat Tennessee, would receive 2 new cars. Talk about the bad orange color, or rocky top, or hillbillies all you want, but the fact is Tennessee fans do not consider Kentucky a rival…we’re a punchline. UK football means nothing to me until that changes.

OK……How about we look at this with “basketball goggles”? UK HAS to beat Duke, UNC, Michigan state, etc…….All of these teams have pretty much owned UK the last 20+ years. How about we look at something your more familiar with?

#5 hit the nail on the head. KY football is a joke to all other SEC teams (exception Vandy of course). Until we can end streaks like this one ( UF also oviously) and finish among the top 3 teams in the East, we will never be consider a threat for an SEC title.. which makes us a punchline…

Joker has no chance of beating Tennessee before he is replaced. None. His best chance was 2009 with Cobb, and he choked it away with horrible play calling that he then blamed on the players.

  30. TreyDay

Lex07, it also helps when your #1 RB can hold onto the ball on the freaking goal-line! So frustrating.

Realistically, UK won that game in ’07…the final score just doesn’t show it. You miss TWO chip-shot FGs that SHOULD have won the game…ON YOUR HOME FIELD; that just doesn’t happen. FU Lonas Seiber.

Jokers #1 goal should be to beat them. Do that and its a great year. However in 2007 i t should’ve happenned, a chance to win and the kicker from tennessee who longed for the opportunity to beat ut on a kick, choked and there you have it. Uk cannot make mistakes in those games.

Kentucky Football has to start to be relevant. They are always down in the likes of Vandy and Ole Miss. If you want to be relevant you have to start somewhere. This is it. Beat the Ugly Orange – Stop the Streak and you can climb from there. Otherwise you’re waiting for Midnight Madness to start.

It will end when it is earned. Stop lowballing the program and spend what it takes to be competitive in the conf…..that’s winning more than losing, not ‘playing ’em close’. Spend football money on football, not football money on basketball . It’s the sec. You can win in basketball for a whole lot less.

Well, the 2007 game, Joker blew it with his play calling. UT enters the game as the 10th ranked pass defense in the SEC and what does UK and Joker do to start the game? They want to establish the running game. UK is down by 17 before we knew what hit us. Then, FINALLY to start the 2nd half we go 4 and 5 wide. We tear them up and catch up. Game goes to OT. After trading point in OT, UK stops UT. WE get the ball at the 35 and our offense hasn’t been stopped since halftime. What happens? Three straight running plays up the middle to set up Seiber to kick for the win…??? What the ??????? Yep, Seiber gets it blocked, UT goes on to win. I will NEVER forgive Joker for that game.

I agree I would give up nearly every game this season (preferably not WKU, Jacksonville St, and CMU) to win this game. I would GLADLY take a 4-7 season with a win at UT and losses to UF, UL, etc. We can work on UF later but the Tennepee streak HAS to end…enough is enough.

#2, appearing in Final Fours from now til doomsday won’t overshadow this 10,000 gorilla on UK’s back. Football foots the bill and is the eye of the country. Basketball isn’t a drop in the bucket compared to this embarrassment.
