BTI’s Rants and Ramblings: Bowl Picture Ugly for UK

1. Alabama (7-1, 4-1)
Likely Wins: Mississippi State, Georgia State
Likely Losses: None
Toss-Ups: at LSU, Auburn
Projection: 12-1 (8-1).  If Alabama is able to get past LSU in Baton Rouge this weekend, then the game against Auburn is for the SEC West title and a likely shot at the national title.  Mississippi State could be a trap game for Bama, but I just don’t see them blowing a chance at the title.

2. Auburn (9-0, 6-0)
Likely Wins: Chattanooga, Georgia
Likely Losses: None
Toss-Ups: at Alabama
Projection: 11-1 (7-1).  If Auburn wins at Alabama, they likely are headed to the BCS title game, assuming a win over South Carolina in the SEC title game.  I think Alabama beats Auburn, sending the Tigers out of the SEC title game but into the Sugar Bowl.

3. Arkansas (6-2, 3-2)
Likely Wins: UTEP
Likely Losses: at South Carolina
Toss-Ups: at Mississippi State, LSU
Projection: 9-3 (5-3). Arkansas could win every SEC game left, or they could lose every SEC left.  This team is about as unpredictable as they come in the conference, and with Mallett’s health in question, it really becomes tough to predict.  But USC will be a tough matchup this weekend, and the MSU and LSU games will decide their fate.  I actually think that Arkansas wins both those games and ends up in a very great bowl.

4. LSU (7-1, 4-1)
Likely Wins: Louisiana-Monroe, Mississippi
Likely Losses: None
Toss-Ups: Alabama, at Arkansas
Projection: 9-3 (5-3). Beat Alabama and a BCS bowl becomes very possible.  Lose to Alabama and the game against Arkansas could be for a spot in the Cotton Bowl.  With that game at Arkansas and assuming Mallett is healthy, I like the Hogs in that game.  But those two games will have a big effect on the end result of bowl bids.

5. Florida (5-3, 3-3)
Likely Wins: at Vanderbilt, Appalachian State
Likely Losses: None
Toss-Ups: South Carolina, at Florida State
Projection: 8-5 (5-4). As amazing as it seems, Florida controls it’s destiny in the SEC East, and I think they run the table the rest of the way, sans at Florida State.  It will setup a 3rd straight Alabama-Florida title game, and I would expect it to be a much tougher battle.  Florida is still a year away from being national title contenders again, but they seem to have turned a corner with the win over Georgia

6. South Carolina (6-2, 4-2)
Likely Wins: Arkansas, Troy
Likely Losses: None
Toss-Ups: at Florida, at Clemson
Projection: 9-3 (5-3). Florida seems to have righted the ship, so I think they have to be favored over the Gamecocks in 2 weeks.  Clemson is on the verge of implosion, so even though that game is on the road, I think USC in that one.  South Carolina should be able to handle Arkansas this weekend at home, but slip-up there, and hopes of a great season are dashed.  Beat Arkansas, and the game against Florida is for the SEC East title.

7. Mississippi State (7-2, 3-2)
Likely Wins: at Mississippi
Likely Losses: Alabama
Toss-Ups: Arkansas
Projection: 8-4 (4-4). MSU has taken a step up in their program but the remaining schedule is daunting.  There is no shoe-in win left, but I am guessing they will beat Ole Miss, and lose to Arkansas and Alabama.  The Arkansas game is their swing game, and if they can win that game, a really good bowl in awaiting.

8. Georgia (4-5, 3-4)
Likely Wins: Idaho State, Georgia Tech
Likely Losses: at Auburn
Toss-Ups: None
Projection: 6-6 (3-5). Georgia has just not been great this year, and the loss against Florida sealed their fate to a lower tier bowl.  They had a chance with a win there to be SEC champs, but that was blown.  Luckily, they have 2 non-conference games that are fairly easy to become bowl eligible.  Georgia Tech could be tricky, but that game is in Athens, and with a bid on the line, I would imagine the Dogs will show up.

9. Kentucky (4-5, 1-5)
Likely Wins: Charleston Southern, Vanderbilt
Likely Losses: None
Toss-Ups: Tennessee
Projection: 6-6 (2-6).  Sorry, but it’s tough to see UK beating Tennessee after 25 years of losses.  I just PRAY TO GOD they don’t blow the game against Vanderbilt and make the Tennessee game necessary for bowl eligibility.  If that happens, things could go south real fast for Joker Phillips.  I see a Vandy win and a UT loss, and another lower tiered bowl for the Cats.
