BTI’s Rants and Ramblings: Bettor’s Guide to the SEC

This is strictly for entertainment purposes only.  And to fuel your rampant crack addiction, and to finally save up enough to hire that hitman to hunt me down.  But besides that, purely entertainment.  As we fully enter SEC play, it’s probably time to give those of you/us who bet now and again some trends to keep an eye out for over the next couple months.  All these facts and figures come from Phil Steele and his gigantic book of useless knowledge.

Against the Spread vs. SEC (Last 10 seasons)
1. Auburn: 48-33-1
2. Arkansas: 47-35
3. Kentucky: 42-38
4. Tennessee: 42-39-2
5. Ole Miss: 40-39-1
6. Georgia: 40-41-2
7. South Carolina: 39-40-2
8. Florida: 39-42-2
9. Vanderbilt: 37-41-2
10. Alabama: 36-42-4
11. LSU: 35-44-5

Biggest Point Spreads Over Last 5 seasons

2006: LSU (-33) over Mississippi State (DID NOT COVER)
2009: Florida (-30) over Tennessee (DID NOT COVER)
2006: LSU (-27) over Ole Miss (DID NOT COVER)
2006: Florida (-26) over Kentucky (DID NOT COVER)
2008: Florida (-26) over Arkansas (COVERED)
2007: Florida (-26) over Arkansas (COVERED)
2006: LSU (-26) over Kentucky (COVERED)
2008: Florida (-25) over Kentucky (COVERED)

Kentucky may have a chance this week to enter itself onto some of these lists.  The point spread will likely be 30 or above come Saturday, meaning it will be only the 4th SEC game since 2006 with a spread over 30.  But, if Kentucky can win the game by 8 points or more, that would be the biggest cover in a very long time.  And as you can see above, LSU has not been good against the spread over the last decade, while Kentucky has been pretty decent.  Use this at your own discretion.

I believe what BTI is trying to say is that Kentucky will beat #1 ranked LSU on the road, by two scores! Well done BTI! (worst post ever).

I guess I’m not following this. How can Tennessee (and all the other biggest covers) cover a 38 point spread against Ole Miss; and then not even be listed in the largest spreads?

    4) Because they were a 17-point underdog and won the game by 21 points, thus a COVER of 38 points. The spread was only 17 but they covered by 38.

Mississippi St. did not beat us by more than 31 points in 2007. What are you talking about Bryan?

#4 You’re not wrong to be confused. The “Biggest Spread Cover” is completely misleading. Way to go BTI.

#5 BTI, that’s an understanding of COVER shared by no one else in the entire world.

    12) Ok buddy, if UK is a 14-point favorite and wins by 30 points, how is that not called a 16-POINT COVER? What is the correct term for that Jimmy the Greek?

  16. Bryan the Intern
    10:45 am September 29, 2011 Permalink

    10) UK was a 14-point favorite that year and lost by 17. That means that Mississippi State covered that spread by 31 points.
