BTI’s Rants and Ramblings: A Little Questionnaire for WVU

Having serious computer issues this morning, and considering I work with Tony Vanetti and Drew Deener, nearly every computer here at work has been smashed to pieces.  Point being, it will be a quick post this morning.  What I thought we would do is go through the players and ask a KEY question coming into West Virginia.  Your job is to answer them.  Simple, right?

1) DARIUS MILLER: Is Darius Miller UK’s best player right now?

2) JOSH HARRELLSON: Has Josh become an offensive WEAPON?

3) TERRENCE JONES: Does Jones need to break out of his funk for further UK success?

4) BRANDON KNIGHT: Was the Princeton game just an anomaly or are you worried about his nerves in the NCAA Tournament?

5) ELOY VARGAS: Has Vargas’ improved play earned him more than his 3 minutes a game?

6) DORON LAMB: How does he not get a single 3-point attempt against Princeton?

7) DEANDRE LIGGINS: Could he be the “difference-maker” going forward on the offensive end?

OK, that is about all my computer is letting me type.  And real quick, a thanks to everybody who sent me nice messages on Twitter and Facebook about the call-in show last night.  And Matt even gave me credit for a good point I made, so we are making progress together folks.

    1. One of, if not, the best. Probably still vote for Knight.
    2. Yes, he seems to get better every game.
    3. Wouldn’t hurt if he showed up. All 5 on the floor need to be productive at this point.
    4. Anomaly. He’ll take over on Saturday.
    5. Possibly, especially if Jones keeps not showing up. Maybe 6-7 minutes is more appropriate.
    6. Not sure. He’s better than that.
    7. His defense doesn’t hurt anything…well except for the teams total foul count. If they let them play, he’s certainly a difference maker. If they whistle it tight, it’s hard for him to stay on the floor.

We desperately NEED T Jones to play his best against WVU. They are monsters on the glass and if he doesn’t give Harrellson any help down low then UK has no shot at making the Sweet 16

Knight averages 17 points a game. He scored 2 points yesterday. I predict he will post 32 on the Mountaineers. I mean, it’s science.

1)Nope. Though Darius has made great strides, Knight is still the best player.
2)I don’t think WEAPON is the right term, but the fact that he has been finishing around the basket when given the chance is something else defenses need to account for.
3)I think the team is functioning better now that Jones isn’t hogging the ball every trip down the floor. If he gets 10 points but has 10 boards and 3 blocks I think we’re good.
4)Anomaly. No nerves on the game winner.
5)Good to see Eloy play well against Florida and Princeton. Still not Jorts.
6)Unacceptable and we need to make sure he gets shots against WVU, which shouldn’t be a problem.
7)Is is me or is DeAndre’s shot falling a lot more in the last few games? I feel confident now when he takes a three.

And now my question for you: How shocked were you when Jones’ three went in?

    1) DARIUS MILLER: Yes…he is straight up money
    2) JOSH HARRELLSON: Not necessarily a weapon, but definitely not a liability either.
    3) TERRENCE JONES: Jones does not impress me, he forces his game, I don’t think it is a funk, rather a need to find a game.
    4) BRANDON KNIGHT: Not worried about Brandon at all!!!
    5) ELOY VARGAS: We are now 7 deep, Vargas has found his spot.
    6) DORON LAMB: Freshman jitters, he will get his swagger back versus West Virginia
    7) DEANDRE LIGGINS: He is not a difference maker, but you can count of a few nice plays each game

    5. No. However, there is no one else on the bench and somebody’s got to come off it.
    6. Princeton took Lamb’s looks away by playing good defense.
    7. Yes. Someone other than Miller, Lamb, and Jones needs to contribute if this team is going to advance any farther.

    2) Polson sucks, as does Poole. Even if every other player on the team goes pro this year, and I mean EVERYBODY, they still wouldn’t get any playing time next year.

  13. Poop Scoop

    1) Miller is not our best player right now, the position still belongs to Brandon Knight. Miller is the player that needs the ball in his hands whenever we go into a draught on the offensvie end. He can score be driving the lane and also from the outside. Plus, Miller is 6,7′, so he can usually find a mismatch either shooting over smaller guards or taking big men off the dribble. That is why his little floater shot is effective.

    2) Harrellson has become somewhat of an offensive weapon, but only against teams like Princeton. If we play OSU, you will see very little dumping the ball down to Harrelson in the post. If UK was to do that against OSU, the player on the receiving end would probably be T Jones.

    3) Jones…….Ughh

    4) Brandon Knight had a difficult game. It helpded the Journeymen of the team to step up produce for this team. Knight will come back. his slump won’t last forever.

    5) Eloy, be happy with what you are getting

    6) Lamb will get his shots, it was the 1st game of the NCAA’s and the freshmen were taken off guard.

    7) Liggins, if he can score, yes he can be a difference maker. Plus, with his defense and instinct to snap, he gives UK that view over the edge that can help a team push past obstacles.

Is it just me, or does Poole not seem like a player that we’ll love in later years? I know he hasn’t played at all, and I’m sure that there’s a reason for that, but he has more fire, more energy, and cheers harder, than anyone else on the bench or on the court. I think he really loves this team

  16. SanDiegoDave

these are the questions going forward… great post BTI.

1 YES Miller scores WITH MORE EASE than anyone on our team by far.

2 he is a weapon that should be used when our offense is struggling to get going. when offense is going not so much, just crash boards.

3, 4, 6: the freshman trio are playing TIGHT!! when we play tight we get beat. Lamb and Knight need to come out ready to hit shots and Jones crashing boards/getting to the rim otherwise we are in trouble!!

5 when Vargas comes in and shocks the world by not being a collosal failure, it pumps the crowd up AND gives the team a boost!

7 Liggins is too much of a matchup problem to not use him in some capacity on offense. and he is hitting shots. i think he has been involved on offense the perfect amount.

    1) I would have him tied with Knight as best player. I expect both of them to have above average games tomorrow.
    2) If Jones would play to his potential then yes I believe Jorts is a useful weapon. Doubling down on Jones would leave Josh open which leads to easy points.
    3) Absolutely. If you play a 6 man rotation, and one person has an off game we are more than likely out of the tourney. We got lucky yesterday without Knight’s usual production.
    4) There is ice in that kid’s veins, as shown by his last second drive. He will be a different player on the floor tomorrow. Even John Wall had some off games. And just remember that Knight won the game for us.
    5) He needs to play more than 3 minutes a game yes. If UK can dominate the boards tomorrow and pull out a W, then it is critical for Eloy to put in some clock against OSU. With a dominant big man like Sullinger in their line-up, we will need him to sacrifice some fouls so Jorts/Jones don’t have to sit for extended periods of time. If that happens we are toast against the Buckeyes.
    6) Better to take good shots than bad ones. He’ll hit some tomorrow for sure. Anyone remember the 1-3-1? To have a decent shot tomorrow he will need to hit some when they count.
    7) Props to him for hitting that late drive yesterday. While he is agile, we all know that he can sometimes be out of control and drive when nothing is there. If he puts up like 8-10 we should be in good shape.

Jones has played terrible for a while. Any time he gets the ball down low, he can’t use his right hand. So it’s predictable to know where he is going every time. And btw, if he loses his man one more time to a back door cut, I’m gonna go coocoo for coco puffs!

We do not have an offense that gets our best shooters open/good shots. Lamb nor Knight had a good/open 3 point shot in the game. Time after time this season, we have needed a basket and were unable to get either of the two an open/good 3 point shot. After yesterday’s Miller’s surprise I doubt if we will be able to get him an open/good 3 point shot, when we really need it. How is it other teams can kill us with screens, and we can’t even set one decent screen?
I am not trying to be negative, but there comes a time in every game where you need a basket, to win, break open a game or whatever and I keep pleading, get Lamb or Knight an open 3.

    4. Absolute fluke; he will return to form
    5. Cautiously yes

    7. Not likely, but we need all the input he can provide… the real difference maker has to be Miller and Harrellson a close second

    1) Yes. He’s upped his game and his confidence and experience are key.
    2) Yes. He is still the garbage man but I am more impressed every game at how much his hands have improved. He handled some tricky passes and finished those plays…he couldn’t consistantly do that before.
    3) Yes. All of our guys have to bring it. We’re obviously not that deep and it’s going to get tougher. I’m refusing to give up on this kid…I think he should stay in school. He will get better and be more consistant. I think for some young players it’s hard to find a balance between contributing to a team and carrying a team. He doesn’t have to do it all… but he has the potential to be what they need him to be on any given night.
    4) I think all of the freshmen had a case of nerves…with this win under their belt confidence will come back. They should start to loosen up. Coach’s confidence in him and his making the game winning basket should give him a lift also.
    5) I think he is not hurting us as bad, I hope he continues to improve because we may get into a position where he has to be on the floor.
    6) Lamb gets more looks if other players establish themselves as threats early in the game. He’s had some great games and they’re guarding him hard…which brings ut to
    7) Yes. The more players that knock down shots and finish drives the better. They can’t double team every body all the time. Loved the assist to Jorts. Teams should be saying “Yeah they’ve only got about 6 guys but you can’t disregard any of them…any one of them can hurt you on any given night.”

    (4) Knight in a slump has Cat fans a little worried
    (5) Vargas has earned more than 3 minutes based on recent production

The entire team was a victim yesterday of Cal’s decision not to pressure defensively (we were way too passive with our half-court D and didn’t pressure full-court much at all) AND the decision to slow it down offensively. We only attempted 47 shots. We shot 51% from the field. We never forced the tempo outside of the first few minutes when we jumped out to a 13-4 lead. Some guys need to step up more but Cal needs to trust the team a little more.

    1) DARIUS MILLER: Is Darius Miller UK’s best player right now? Not necessarily, but he is one of three that on any given night may step up (Miller, Harrelson, Knight)

    2) JOSH HARRELLSON: Has Josh become an offensive WEAPON? Definitely.

    3) TERRENCE JONES: Does Jones need to break out of his funk for further UK success? Yes. We will need him against WVU and definitely against Ohio State.

    4) BRANDON KNIGHT: Was the Princeton game just an anomaly or are you worried about his nerves in the NCAA Tournament? Anomaly. The kid has played 30 other games just fine.

    5) ELOY VARGAS: Has Vargas’ improved play earned him more than his 3 minutes a game? No. Not in the tournament when teams tend to shorten their rotation.

    6) DORON LAMB: How does he not get a single 3-point attempt against Princeton? He is still a step slow, along with some stage fright.

    7) DEANDRE LIGGINS: Could he be the “difference-maker” going forward on the offensive end? Probably not, but on a given night, he could hit the big shot we need.

    2) JOSH HARRELLSON: Is a gun to the head, don’t make Cal pull the trigger. You better guard him close.
    3) TERRENCE JONES: If he plays great D we are OK. When he makes 6-10 ft shots it is curtains.
    4) BRANDON KNIGHT: He will come back with a vengeance. No worries.
    5) ELOY VARGAS: Yes, Eloy is the new Jorts. He may have a role as he is more athletic than Josh.
    6) DORON LAMB: He is dynamite waiting to be ignited.
    7) DEANDRE LIGGINS: He needs to finish plays not try to set people up. He is playing well and to stay on that upswing Deandre needs to keep it simple.

    1) Yes. Miller is a match-up problem for other teams. And he scores at will. I’m absolutely comfortable when the ball is in his hands.

    2) Yes. Harrelson has the ability to score quickly and get fouled, 2 very important parts of an NCAA tourny.

    3) I’ve not been overly impressed with Jones’ play for the last 7 or so games. If he starts playing his best games, starting with Huggy Bear, we’re going to be unstoppable.

    4) Knight might have had a case of the nerves. This too shall pass.

    5) Does anyone still consider Eloy a liability on the floor now? He’s really stepped it up as of late. I’m betting he really comes out of his shell next year, and becomes a bigger part of the rotation.

    6) Perhaps he didn’t want one… Princeton’s gameplan was to defend the freshmen primarily.

    7) Liggins defense has always been top notch. But his offense has looked really good lately. That may actually be the difference.

All in all, I’d say we’re on the upswing.

2)Josh is a threat because he gets it done
3)Jones needs to learn to take it up strong and get rid of his finess west coast style.
4)Brandon will be fine he always bounces back strong after a bad game
5)I’m not nervous when Eloy comes in anymore. Like Cal said its like adding another player to the roster when he plays well.
6)I think there was a few time he should have shot the ball yesterday and didnt hopefuly its just nerves
7)He is a difference maker on both ends but the biggest area he could be the differnce maker is his 3pt shot when hes on we r on

    1) DARIUS MILLER: I have more confidence in Miller than anyone else on offense right now, and it’s not even close.
    2) JOSH HARRELLSON: He is a threat when the rest of the guys actually look to pass it to him .. instead of getting half their shots blocked back into their face(TJ). Jorts always finishes.
    3) TERRENCE JONES: I guess we need him. The offense is so much better when it goes through Miller, like in SEC Tourny. Cal has realized this and made the shift towards Miller getting his touches. Now Jones doesnt get the ball half as much as he did earlier in the season, and we are a better team for it.
    4) BRANDON KNIGHT: Not worried about him at all. He will dominate all the way to Houston.
    5) ELOY VARGAS: Stolen from post 21 – “5 when Vargas comes in and shocks the world by not being a collosal failure, it pumps the crowd up AND gives the team a boost!” .. awesome
    6) DORON LAMB: If WVU plays that stupid 1-3-1 Lamb will drop 30, probably drop 8 or nine 9 balls. POW!
    7) DEANDRE LIGGINS: He is a really good passer, and when he drives to set people up it is great. Him hitting 3’s is a bonus.
