While I’m not typically a huge Bruce Pearl fan, I did find an instance when I would cheer for him– when he takes on Skip Bayless. There are several media types I don’t care much for, but none is higher on the list than Bayless. When it comes to being a contrarion, he makes Greggggg (how many G’s does he use again?) Doyel look like a wussy. But at least Doyel can make sensible arguments. Bayless just argues to argue and I can’t stand it.
Anyway, Bruce Pearl went on ESPN’s First Take to promote UT basketball and got into a verbal sparring match with Bayless, a Vandy alum. Pearl went straight for the jugluar, bulletin board material be damned-
“Head to head against them, we have a winning record,” Pearl said. “They’ve beaten us at our place one time, we beat them at their place a couple times. Over the last three or four years we’ve won seven NCAA tournament games; over the last three years Vanderbilt hasn’t won a game.
“We average 20,000 (attendance), they average about 12. We play on a court where the benches are actually on the sidelines, not in the end zone. . . . I think our program is ahead of Vanderbilt’s.”
Listen, I don’t care to hear about the merits of UT basketball, and surely he couldn’t argue this against a Kentucky alum, but I’m always up for someone putting Bayless in his place. Especially on his own show.
