Brent Pease hasn’t heard from UK, but sees the potential

Houndstooth hat? +1

The coaching rumor mill keeps on churning! After his name was batted around as a potential candidate for the UK head coaching job, Florida offensive coordinator Brent Pease told reporters that he hasn’t heard from the Cats yet, so it’s a non-issue:

“First off, that situation is out of the question right now because I haven’t heard anything. I wouldn’t do that. I’m focused on here. I’ve only been here one year. I’ve made a commitment to be here, especially with my family. Ask me that question later when something happens, I guess. I can’t comment on a ghost story right now.”

Pease, who coached at UK under Guy Morriss from 2001 to 2002, did say that he sees potential for greatness in Lexington:

“They’ve got great people. They’ve got a great program and the facilities are good. They’re committed to winning. And they have won. They won when we were there. They won when Rick Brooks was there.

“You can get good kids there.”

You may remember Pease from his recent feud with former UK QB Jared Lorenzen, whom he coached at UK. When Pease took over as offensive coordinator at Florida, Lorenzen criticized the hire on Twitter, calling Pease “freaking crazy” and prone to leaving the program like he did when Morris left for Baylor. Pease retaliated by threatening to hang 50 on the Cats when they played this season. 38 isn’t 50, but it sounds like Pease still has respect for the Kentucky program and may listen if the Cats come calling.

Thoughts on Pease?

It seems like he might be my 64th choice. It’s hard to forget what he said plus he sounds like he wants the job before it’s been offered, sounds a little needy

Don’t like the idea of hiring a co-ordinator and taking a chance that he can handle the head coaching duties. But if we have to go that route, I did like what UK was able to do under Moriss. We won a lot of games his second year we shouldn’t have by playing field position and taking advantage of special teams. One game at Arkansas I think the Hogs racked up 500 yards offense from the 20-to-20 but settled for field goals, and UK was in control of the game the whole time. A lot of games were like that.

No way on this guy. It is always a red flag when a team’s fans hate a coach and can’t wait for him to leave. Also, do we really want a coach who is so mature that he felt compelled to respond to something on twitter by threatening to run up the score. Pass.

Not exactly a home run….Mitch better hit a home run here….or he is gonna be the one feeling the heat…this hire better shock the world…and we better open up the check book….some young up and comer or a coordinator with no experience is quite a gamble for Mitch…his job is on the line….he better know what he is doing…

The unfortuante thing about all of the searching for a new coach is that Mitch will hire someone we’re going to say “WTF” about. I don’t think he’ll have the real guts to “swing for the fences” so to speak on a new football coach. It’s all talk and nothing will come of it.

Just watch and see. Just like the UK administration has done with football my entire life, they’ll make a boring hire. It’ll be some young guy who they’ll try to sell us all on, or it’ll be whats left of some old guy like Cutcliffe or Fulmer, and they will be hired on the cheap, at the bottom of the SEC pay scale, just like always. Not once in my 35 years of watching UK football, has the University of Kentucky ever made a serious push for football success. Why would they when we keep filling the stands year after year?

History will repeat itself, we’ll make a boring cheap hire, we will suck. After a few years of sucking, we’ll make another boring cheap hire, and we may fluke our way into moderate success, maybe 7 wins or so, but we’ll return to sucking. Mitch Barnhart isnt the problem. The Board, boosters, and the Alums just dont take football seriously, never have, and I doubt they will this time.

Just wait and see whoever we hire, what they get paid compared to other high profile coaches. See if RJ Corman flies him in here on his jet a la Calipari. Just like our recruting budget and Commonwealth Stadium, it’ll be done on the cheap and we’ll get what we pay for.

he would be an excellent choice. Compare his offense in Morris final year to brooks first year, virtually the same players, huge difference in results. Look at the success he had at Boise State. He runs the offense the way the head coach wants him to at Florida, ball control, running game.

I think he would be successfull at UK with support

Mitch should make Pease and Fulmer #’s 1 and 1A on his priority list for the new coach hire!!! He should not even consider anyone else until he’s tried to pick between these two. And Pease is the only one i’d consider before Fulmer.

Bring him for interview – we know he can coach the offense – but can he recruit, get great assistant coaches — and manage a program – those are the real questions.

  22. MustangCat

Pease has that take no prisoners attitude that you have to have to be a head coach. He wants to shake hands before the game, disembowel you, then shake hands after the game. That is what makes the difference in head coaches. If they can walk a clean line off the field, then you will have a top coach on your hands. There is one thing to hate to lose, but guys like this don’t even consider losing. They want to decapitate their opponent. They want to utterly destroy the other team. It’s not just about winning the game. They have to want to conquer. To rule!

If we WON’T go after Petrino….then get Fat Phil! He’s a proven HEAD COACH and he can bring the coaches and recruits we need to win a few games. We’ll never be elite unless we get elite coaches and spend cash…that ain’t gonna happen. Fat Phil will probably take it for a couple million a year. All the OC stuff is just more of the same of what we had here.

Morris had an affible personality, creditability due to being an NFL lineman if I remember correctlly, a linemans perspective on the game, the grunt work of hit your oppenent HARD every play, and then sick Artose Spinner on them. Wasn’t ‘Jason Watts on that team? Jason made an unfogivable mistake off the field. On the field he kicked everybodys azz. EVERYBODY to include the FLORIDAS, GEORGIA, TENNESEE AND ALABAMA

Pease and BBN will be well served if he does NOT come to Lexington. Jared Lorenzen was correct when he called Pease “freakin’ crazy’, because Pease IS ‘freakin’ crazy’. Kentucky does not need another ‘Billy Clyde’ as a head coach, and if he were to show up here, that’s EXACTLY what you would have.

Hadn’t heard that. We heard that Morris ask Barnhart to at least mach Baylors offer. It may have seemed high at the time for any coach with a couple years experience at UK but Baylor being a Texas school understood potential. Pay a little more now and avoid a truck load next year. Also heard, for what its worth, that UK(Barnhart) were so sure Morris did not to leave UK the gamble was made with cheaper offer and Morris didn’t blink. True to his nature

If i was Mitch, alot of coaches would have to turn me down, I’d ask every good coach in the country, and i’d offer a ton of money. Look what South Carolina did with basketball, they pulled a successful coach from a succesful program no one knew he wanted to leave. Thats the blueprint we need to follow. I’d ask Bob Stoops, Chip Kelly, Chris Peterson, ect. They’d all have to turn me down and i’d fight like hell to get them.

I want to tell you about a person that would fit all the needs for UK’s next football coach. Instead of a retread coach, I think this coach would be a perfect young, yet seasoned coach for UK. His name needs to and should be brought up in the conversation…

** Played in PAC-10 and won 4 straight bowls as a player.

** As an assistant coach his teams played in 6 bowl games, including a team that had a 20 game win streak.

** Became an SEC Asst Coach and helped lead a turnaround on an underachieving team.

** In 2005, he became recruiting coordinator for that SEC team and 12 players went on to play in the NFL! 6 are still active as of 2012 — He can spot talent!

** Left to take Head Coaching position at San Diego when Jim Harbaugh was hired away by Stanford.

** Prolific offense which averaged 44 pts and 483 yards per game during first season.

** Won two conference championships (9-2 both seasons) and named Coach of the Year in the Pioneer League in 2007 & 2011.

** Charismatic and possesses a “winners” mentality.

** 45 years old, married with 3 boys. His wife was former athlete at UCLA & Tennessee (tennis).

That SEC Team was the Kentucky Wildcats….Yhe coach is Ron Caragher.

I don’t know other people’s thoughts but I would love to see UK hold a Poll and in a few weeks announce who the top three coaches are that the fans would like to see come here. I know it is crazy but why not. UK Picked Billy G. and as much as I liked “Joker as an Offensive coordinator”, Named him as coach in waiting. Why not give the fans and studients a voice in the matter.

Trust Jared. Pease IS FREAKIN CRAZY!!! And he has no head coaching experience. Zero chance he’s our next coach, unless every other viable candidate turns Mitch down. Sonny Dykes is a much better option. Runs an up-tempo offense. Head coaching experience. Recruiting connections in our target area. Former UK assistant. The absolute best candidate that MIGHT take the job is Bobby Petrino. But because of our perceived moral & ethical superiority, I doubt he’ll even be considered.

I think Mitch Barnhart would prefer a head coach rather than an assistant so that there is a record to look at and so the new coach is not learning as he goes. Of course, that might go by the wayside if someone of the caliber of Kirby Smart was available. Brent Pease is a good coach but I think he’s not on the “A” list. I believe Jim Tressel has a show cause order from the NCAA. Why would UK want a guy who has failed to advise his AD of infractions and lied to the NCAA investigators?
