Calipari told us we’d eventually find out who started the breakfast club and it took all of one day for the names to come out. After Kentucky’s win over Samford last night, a couple of players revealed that Michael Kidd-Gilchrist started the early morning workouts. Kidd-Gilchrist was getting up early to work out on his own and Coach Cal suggested that he invite his teammates. The first time the group met, it was Kidd-Gilchrist, Anthony Davis, Kyle Wiltjer, and Terrence Jones.
The group changes from day-to-day and Marquis Teague said sometimes the whole team is involved. Teague, who said he’ll be at this morning’s 8:30 a.m. club, believes it is great for the team’s chemistry. “You don’t even have to do anything spectacular, just go in stretch together and lift weights or something like that,” he said.
Now that we know who started the group, is anyone even the least bit surprised that it was Michael Kidd-Gilchrist? Who else could it have possibly been over MKG? The kid is a workaholic and the undisputed leader of this Kentucky team — although he admitted he was timid at first. “At first I was scared to lead over the veterans,” he told reporters last night. “But now I know it’s OK. I want to be a leader. It’s all about team chemistry.”
They just don’t make many like Michael Kidd-Gilchrist. I’m glad he’s in blue.
