Brandon Knight, Terrence Jones and some awards

For what seems like the 3,000th time, a UK player has earned SEC Freshman of the Week honors.  Point guard Brandon Knight was this week’s recipient – the fifth time he’s been honored this season – thanks to averaging 21 points, 5.5 asssists and 4 rebounds in UK’s two games with Arkansas and Florida.  He currently sits only three-pointer shy of UK’s single-season freshman record.

Knigth’s teammate, meanwhile, earned some national love.  Terrence Jones was named a finalist for the Oscar Robertson National Player of the Year Award.  The freshman from Portland, who I would argue is the second-best player on the team (but that’s for a different day), was one of the ten finalists for the award.  It will be awarded April 1 and is based on a vote of national basketball writers.  No Kentucky player has ever won the award.

If Wall couldn’t win the award, why would Jones have a legit shot at it?

The only thing that TJ wins would be the award to the player with the most missing chin….unless Hood beats him out.

Obviously the folks who are nominating are just looking at his numbers in general and not his actual performance and efficiency. Still glad to have the kid, and would argue that he’d perform better if we just had another player or two.

Jones is nominated based on (a) numbers, and (b) Maui/December. He was discussed as a legit POY candidate back then, when UK was top 10, fresh off a victory over ND where he dominated. His numbers look good, but his impact on games recently has taken a nose-dive.

Jones is definitely tough and deserves recognition, however, the blatant disregard that people in “the know” have for the value of Knight is disheartening. Other than the Cousey award, he just stays in a virtual shadow cast by Wall IMHO. Also, IMHO, Knight is a better all around player than Wall.

If Miller becomes consistent, then Jones becomes the third best player on the team. Jones looks like he has been taking pointers from Vargas here lately. There is no way he wins Player of the year, not even close. If any one on this team deserves to be nominated, it is Knight.

I am beginning to think Hood should start over Jones based on his recent performances !

Jones is good, but he isn’t all that just yet. Jones is constantly getting his shot blocked, its now beyond ridiculous!! If Jones tries going pro, he’s an idiot; he’s got no business in the NBA yet, he defiantly needs at least another year !!

If that bracket were to pan out, We are Final Four Bound, but you know they would never hook up that cats like that. They don’t love us like they do duke.

10.) I agree. It won’t be long before Knight is handed the reins to an NBA franchise. Oh, wait…. (He is a great player, though.)

Jones is way over hyped. I think they played better against the gators when Jones was on the bench in the first half. Jorts is more important to this teams success than Jones.

12 Miller is already better than Jones. As far as consistency goes Jones isnt consistent either unless you count getting your shot blocked on a regular basis or dribbling the ball off your foot or pounding your chest and screaming after you score and constantly being the last player down the court.

The hype on Jones has been continually overstated, no. 15 is right on track. I would take Miller anyday over Jones, sure Jones has some skills, but he needs many , many more college games to define himself. He is only a shadow of what he was percieved to be early in the season.

I have failed to realize why so-called true blue cat fans see the need to get on a message board and speak poorly about our players and even attack them personally which is unexcusable. People, these players will read some of the comments, why do you think any of this needs to be said.

18- No, we’re better when he is on the floor. We are better when he just plays within the flow of the offense, instead of him forcing shots, just trying to get HIS numbers.

The biggest problem I had with TJ on Saturday is his refusal to BLOCK OUT. He is not going to be able to out “athlete” everybody.
Giving up over 20 offensive rebounds is just ridiculous.

21 They need to read them. If they cant handle it tough shit, they shouldnt be playing D-1 bball with hopes of going pro.

I agree with others here. While I love TJ and am ecstatic he changed his mind and came to UK. His best ball is ahead of him. His game needs developing.
His upside is amazing but Josh, Liggins and Miller are far more valuable and thier basketball intellect is far superior. If TJ stays he may go down as
one of the greats but he is not there yet. I fear (for lack of a better word) he like many are far too anxious to make the jump to the NBA where they are well paid to develop. Becoming a great college player and making a significant contribution to the program in most cases isn’t important to today’s bluechip
    players. With all due respect.

    21) good call man these freshman kids know they need improvement
lets not bash the kids they can read these comments. Jones and knight
are amazing freshman but need improvement as does lamb and everyone
else. Miller knows he needs improvement but no need to drill these
YOUNG men in the ground. GO CATS!

If he leaves, Jones will not go down as one of the greats, certainly not at UK. A really good athlete, but I think he lacks
a real basketball IQ and takes off WAY too much during games. A one and done that could really use another year under Cal
but in todays NBA market, he’s gone. I’ll miss what he could have been.

Miller over Jones as a team player, Jones and Knight both need another year. But if the MONEY is there i can’t blame them for taking it. If i was 19 and offered Millions i would and so would anyone on this site !!!!!!
