Bozich with Another anti-UK Absurd Piece

bozich

I have to make this quick, but it deserves to be said. In this utterly absurd article by Rick Bozich, he basically takes UK and its recruits to task for not playing in the Derby Classic this year. In case you haven’t heard, the UK foursome of Anthony Davis, Marquis Teague, Mike Gilchrist and Kyle Wiltjer have decided to play in the McDonalds All American game and the Jordan Classic instead of the Derby Classic. All players are only allowed to play in two games, so the Derby Classic ends up on the short end of the stick.

Bozich speaks with Dan Owens (who in full disclosure, I really like) and repeats the Derby organizer’s complaints. I understand why Owens feels the way he does. It is his event and he has worked hard to make it great over the years. But for Bozich to then get involved…well what a journalist he is eh? He essentially repeats the complaint that the players aren’t showing loyalty to the local event. But in reality, why should they? They aren’t from here and their loyalty is to themselves. He then suggests that the reason they are going to the Jordan event is because of UK’s association with Nike. Of course he leaves out that the Derby event is associated with Adidas and the reason UL players may all be coming is that they are an ADIDAS school! Bozich apparently doesnt think this is worth mentioning.

But most importantly, Bozich leaves out the biggest reason a kid would choose the Jordan game over the Derby Classic. The Jordan game has MICHAEL JORDAN AND IS ON ESPN! The Derby Classic has no NBA player and is on Wazoo Sports. Why would any kid turn the former down for the latter? It just isn’t going to happen. If the Adidas game had Lebron and was on Fox Sports…maybe you have something. But it is on a local station and has no marquee host. Kids are going to choose the bigger event.

It is unfortunate for the Derby Classic because it is a great event. It has a long tradition and has produced great games and events over the years. But it is a different time. Unlike what the codger Rick suggests, UK fans don’t need the event to see the players play. They have already seen them on the internet, ESPN and will watch their all-star games on ESPN as well. The Derby Classic is not the “only” chance like it was even ten years ago. It is one of many opportunities and UK fans would like to see it…but it isn’t required.

Of course none of this matters to Bozich. He had a chance to criticize UK…throw in a shot at a UK-Nike connection (while blatantly failing to mention the UL-Adidas connection) and get a column to raise controversy. It is perfect, stereotypical work for the Courier Journal (non-Brett Dawson division) and Rick Bozich. No context, simplistic and full of cheap shots. Your local newspaper at work once again.

You seemed a bit surprised by this Matt. I for one, have become used to the blatant bias in this city. I can’t blame UofL for doing it, they have half the city their school is named for cheering for their bitter rival. However, what makes me mad is the poor journalism that stems from this strangle hold Tommy Turtleneck has over the Louisville media. It is propaganda at its finest and every UofL fan who reads this article is probably nodding their head in agreement, even though this poorly written and researched article full of slander and insinuations is not even news. Tommy Turtleneck has a group of biased writers helping him convince the UofL fans to not look at the faults within their own program, but rather to focus on Uk. Sad part is, this is the best they can come up with.

Owens is complaints sounds like sour grapes. He is event organizer and recruits players hoping for what? That’s right, ticket sales. He himself said that if the UK players came it would be SRO.
Bosich (who looks like Leno is this pic) was a sympathetic ear to Owen’s crying.
What is one glorified pickup game in the grand scheme to the fans? Very little to this fan. However to Owens it is his livelyhood.

Everyone mentioning ticket sales and money as the reason for the attack on UK and its recruits is spot on. Owens needs to step up his game when it comes to competing with the other games for these kids. It’s not that they don’t want to come here and represent, it’s that they can’t. Blame the NCAA, not UK, and certainly not our kids. It is being called the best recruiting class in history, so I believe the majority of our fans would rather see our boys on the National stage representing for Kentucky…not supporting the city of Louisville’s lame Derby festivities. The exposure we’ll reap from our boys being at the Jordan Classic and the MDAA game will be immense.

  54. Lee
    3:37 pm February 22, 2011 Permalink

I think these kids are demonstrating loyalty to UK by playing in the bigger event. Who would want to tune in to watch UK recruits and see them doing anything but stomping the Cards in the center. If you’ve already paid for advertising (scholarships), wouldn’t you want it on national television? Daniel Orton and Jon Hood are great, but that’s not who UK has coming in next year. Has anyone ever turned down the Jordan Brand game? I can’t believe anyone is upset about this without understanding on some level.

Hell No. It’s like Matt says, it just gives bozich another way to hate on UK. ul’s current players are not good enough to play the elite games. which is why I brought up Blackshear. No elite player is going to subject themselves to an inferior tourney. They compete high level and they should be in high level all-start games. The DC will probably less and less players from UK, because UK recruits on such a high level. ul is save-a-lot or aldi food store.

SnNH, a penis is like a Rubic’s Cube because it takes a lot of wrist action to get it to finish right.

What a waste of Media payroll? Evidently since Pitino is watching his back side at UL Bozich has nothing better to do than pick on UK. Go be a Tar Heel Reporter and save the state of Kentucky your ridiculous blubber reporting

I hope no UK recruit ever plays in the derby classic. louseyville doesn’t deserve that honor.

Dan Owens is a great guy, but seriously… no national television?? Everything is televised nationally. I have 800 f’ing nationally-televised channels on my cable service. You mean to say that not one of the 82 sports channels that I get would televise it nationally? Not even tape delay?? I see roller derby, frog jumping races, Irish stone lifting, bobsledding from Latvia and frisbee golf. Bowling — f’ing bowling — is on tv all the time! If you can’t get this game on national tv, what’s the point? 21st century, dude.

101- haha, that is good one, but actually a penis is like a rubik’s cube, becuase the more you play with it the harder it gets.

Matt I wonder if Bozich has ever missed a column while he chased greater exposure to be on ESPN’s SportsReporters instead of settling for publishing his opinions in a local newspaper column? Did Bozich write an article ripping apart the decision by our boy Pat Forde to leave the local paper and his column to join ESPN and write only a weekly column for ESPN? Bozich only proves that he was a tool of the Derby Classic organizer and decided to criticize 4 young men who have busted their butt to be at the pinnacle of their profession much like Bozich does after he appears on the awful SportsReporters or how his butt-buddy Forde does when he writes his crap FordeMinute and FordeYardDash. He is an a-hole.

“87) Libtard? Hahah, god that’s awful. I almost hope the Mayans were right about 2012…”

Libtard is terrible!! I’d rank it right behind “Teabagger” in the awful category.
