Boogie Knows What’s Up

With his friendship with Calipari and the recent interview with Pitino and Cal, Jim Rome has really had some great stuff concerning the Cats recently.  He’s got a solid perspective on the way Coach Cal deals with elite players and how he puts his kids first without compromising the idea of ‘team’.  DeMarcus Cousins spoke with Rome today about Calipari’s methods.  It’s obvious that Boogie ‘gets it’, and that may be due to Cal.

DeMarcus dropped some great lines, although we all probably knew it.  He spoke about how Calipari tells elite players that you can ‘be the man’ by getting your teams wins, instead of dropping 40 points a game.  Cousins could’ve gone to UAB, as he once planned, and averaged 30+ a game, but he bought into Cal’s idea of winning being more important than individual numbers.  DeMarcus mentioned on John Wall and Eric Bledsoe may have had their heads on a bit more striaght when they arrived on campus, and maybe his need to learn and mature more at first is why he got such a bad rap.

Also, Cousins spoke on how Cal approaches the NBA factor when recruiting kids — instead of saying “Come here because I can get you to the NBA”, Coach Cal says “If you work hard, you can get yourself to the NBA.  And I can give you a great stage, facilities, and teammates to do so, all while winning big in the process.”  More or less.

DeMarcus is currently killing it in the NBA, as he is the youngest player in the league leading his team in both points and rebounds.  Special talent and great, misunderstood guy.

Wow first comment already trolling. Jealousy is strong with this one. I’m really proud of cousin’s success. He’s just a big teddy bear that needed to be polished before he shone. Now he’s a superstar. Congrats to him and hopefully all the haters can put down the weed and see clearly that Cal is a great guy, great coach, and great CLEAN recruiter.

I actually think its pretty funny, that a fan of another team has NO LIFE at all and the only think they have to do for fun is come and throw rocks at the throne. I mean, its not like anything interesting is going on with their own team.

Cousins is a great player and I think he’s a great guy to…I do think he is misunderstood…he’s one of my favorite players that we have had in the past few years and I’m happy to see him doing so well in the NBA. As for the troll that left the first comment…ignore it and ignore them..simply not worth it.

Nice article to read. You know, I never really understood, I mean appreciated, Coach Cal until I saw all those Final Four TV interviews. And especially after he won the Whole Enchilada. They guy is special. I understand why these young kids with all the talent want to come to UK. As he says, any of these high school flashes can the The Man and bust 40 every other night for some of the lesser programs. But to be in the hunt for the national championship EVERY year is a privilege.

But Boogie, dog you gotta lose that gansta-a** Tennessee head band.

@16. Tim Couch’s career did not go how he planned but to say he is the biggest bust is just ignorant people hatin’. Tim Couch led the “expansion” Browns to the playoffs. They went to their first playoff game with Tim Couch and have not been back since. I’d say Tim Couch succeeded more at Cleveland than anyone after him…but you are just a hater and are gonna hate either way. Cleveland has been a death sentence for QB’s since they cheered when Couch got injured. Those classless people did not deserve a competitor like Tim but they sure do deserve their constant mediocrity. You know why you are on here trolling. It is because UK is the BEST EVER and tears you up, Loser!! Brow Down to the throne of BIG BLUE Beeeatch!!!!!! Jealous much??

I’m actually really proud of him. He is a whole lot more mature and developed than where he was last year. The negative of this one-year player system is that while some guys have all the talent and potential in the world, and greater skills than their counterparts, they might not be ready to be full fledged adults yet, especially under the spotlight. Few can say that they are mentally ready for a high stress high paying job at 19 years old. In that respect, though his draft stock might have taken a hit, an extra year as a kid in college might have helped his transition to the NBA. A lot more than where you end up in the draft should go into making that decision. Look at how well Orton ended up.

The endorsements from super talented former players for Coach Cal carry credabilty that is unshakable in future players and their families minds. It proves they can count on every thing he says.
Unlike the now friendly support from one who now realizes he can not
Compete in twining games, recruiting and national exposure doing inavative ideas like telivised practice, open facilitates to. NBA lockouts
    And on and on

Would you people rather have these adolescents on here posting stupid crap about Kentucky,,,,or would you rather still have Billy G and Tubby leading us into obscurity ? The very fact that they are on the NCAA Champs web site posting this stuff says volumes. I love it and they are an endless source of amusement.

cal gets a bad rap compared to other coaches and teams. Duke and their coach had infraction issues with cory maggette, they were expecting penalities. So guess what the ncaa swept it under the table, while if that was Kentucky they would have gotten busted. Is there favoritism in the ncaa’s judgment toward the ACC? The things they spread. How can a coach control what a student or his family does, yet the mud ends up in cals lap. The top wing’s family already have a financial advisor that has paid for recruiting trips to Duke and North Carolina. So will cal and Kentucky inheret that mess if he comes to Kentucky?
