Boogie and Krebs’ Friday Notes

krebsboog

Tonight two of KSR’s favorite b-ball players did a signing in Lexington to meet the fans as their careers ended. Demarcus Cousins and Mark Krebs are both great individuals and over the course of their time at Kentucky have become two of my favorites to get to know. Mark Krebs will be around more around the summer and you can expect to see him do some stuff with KSR in the coming months. He is funny, self-deprecating and has a great knowledge of the game that I think fans will love. And as for Boogie, well he may be the ultimate KSR player. From day one, he embraced his role with the fans, showcased a great sense of humor and was himself a KSR reader. That is a trifecta that will make us swoon like Drew Franklin making a drink for Kirk Herbstreit. From what I am told, he soon begins the workouts that will determine his NBA draft status. He will be around Lexington occasionally throughout and we are still hoping for the Boogie podcast. But no matter what happens, the day he is drafted, I am ordering a Boogie NBA shirt and his team (along with that of P-Pat) will have a new dedicated fan. Great to see both guys meeting the fans and we will let people know if more of these events are coming down the pike.

To some notes on a busy day:

— There is recruiting news coming from every direction, so lets get to it. Doron Lamb has made a decision and it will be announced Saturday during the Jordan Brand Classic. That decision is almost certainly Kentucky and thus we will crank up the old LIVE BLOG again on Saturday to cover it. Lamb is a great shooter and is exactly what the team this year could have used. He would be commitment #4 and another piece to the puzzle Calipari is getting set for next season.

— Another player announcing on Saturday is all but certain to not be coming to Kentucky. Josh Selby will make his call and nearly all expect it to be Kansas. Today ESPN reported it was down to UT and KU and that the decision will be at the same time as Lamb on Saturday. Since Friday, I have been convinced UK was not in the picture and many have gotten angry, mainly because the news is now what they wished was the case. Remember, UK will not get EVERY recruit…and in the case of Selby, it has likely been over for a while.

— The prize of the class continues to be Terrence Jones, who did the Kentucky interviews today, talking to Larry Vaught and Jerry Tipton. Jones gave some good vibes, saying that Kentucky fans “should be optimistic” about his decision and saying that he would like to play in Rupp Arena. Those statements are good and there is a sentiment among some that UK will get Jones. But my sources are still unsure as to what he will do and have been for some time. Jones is good at making the media he is talking to feel good…that is part of why his interviews last weekend told Northwest reporters he wanted to stay close to home. Among those who are charged with getting Jones, few know where they stand. This one will come down to the wire as Jones makes his call with Terrence Ross either the 23rd or 30th of this month.

— Evan Daniels rained on folks’ parades today when he said he thought 2011 PG Marquis Teague was leaning Louisville again after a late push by Rick Pitino. On the KSR Live Blog, he said he thought Teague was “60-40” for the Cards. Some fans are upset at these comments and have said Daniels is a Louisville homer, etc. Evan is as good at this as it gets and even though he wears Dan Wolkenesque absurd t shirts, his info is very good and he speaks with solid foundation under his comments. I dont know what Teague will do, but after conversations with Evan today, I do think it is a horse race between UK and UL, and his decision will come before the end of the month.

— The other topic of the day is CJ Leslie, who seems to have drifted from UK. The frosted one has already called it for NC State and others seem to think that is where he is leaning. Everything I have heard from my end has suggested that Calipari has stayed in contact with Leslie and is still recruiting him, but people think the Wolfpack have the inside track. He is another one that will likely be more clear after the weekend. He plans to decide early next week.

— Calipari will be in New York on Friday recruiting around the Jordan Classic as all the big remaining targets are playing there. Expect him to put that last push on these guys at the game in which some are even pulling the trigger.

— Expect another one or two names to develop this weekend as Kentucky looks to fill spot 6 (or 5 if Jones doesnt come with another player that may have lesser star value. Marcus Thornton is one such name but there will be a couple more that we will discuss this weekend.

— In some legal news, Rod Strickland pled not guilty on his DUI charge from early in the week.

— We had the goodbye press conference for Demarcus Cousins today in which no real news came about, but you could tell how much he would miss being in Lexington. If you havent seen it yet, make sure and check it out.

— Fan of Treme on HBO…first episode was decent and I love anything about New Orleans. Trying to get into “Sons of Anarchy” on DVD….is it worth it?

— The night at the Lousiville Bats game with the Turkey Hunter was basically spent discussing, making jokes about and generally being perplexed by the entire Big Ben saga. Way too much to get into on a blog but you cant read that police report and think anything good about the Roethlisberger.

Big day tomorrow and a huge day Saturday….stay tuned as the class gets full and UK basketball continues to be fun….
