Bobby Petrino’s Father Says Petrino is Interested in Kentucky

You knew it was only a matter of time…and here it is. Bobby Petrino tells the Courier Journal that his son is interested in the UK job. He said:

“I know he wants a job; he needs a job,” Petrino Sr. said by telephone Wednesday. “He told me, ‘I need a job, Dad.’ I said, ‘Well, you must still have some money. You made 31/2 million dollars.’ And he said, ‘Yeah, I do. It’s not the money.’ He just misses coaching so much.”

“I just know this, that he’s interested in Kentucky,” the father said. “He wants to stay in the SEC. That was his life’s goal was to go to the SEC.”

That should keep the airwaves and message boards churning…

Mitch is in a corner now, and has to make the hire. If he goes with the 2nd and third tier dykes or brown he should be fired on the spot. This is a home run hire. Chain him down with his contract where he can’t pull any stunt like the past. This is a no brainier and if Mitch fails he looks stupid and the nation will laugh. Petrino will get butts in the seats and excitement back. Don’t let us down Mitch. Dykes and Neil brown are 2nd an third tier.

I think there’s a chance that his problems at Arkansas might have taken some of the wind out of his sails and taught him some humility. I think he knows he lost a lot and may be very appreciative of another opportunity. I hope Mitch gives him an interview and decides for himself how the risk/reward ratio stacks up and if he’s worth an opportunity.

As a UK alum, I’d be very disappointed if UK even interviewed Petrino. He is a train wreck and a bad person. I hope he changes as a person and gets a chance somewhere, just not here. Winning the way he operates just isn’t worth it to me. He doesn’t have the values you want to see for the college atmosphere. Plus, you could not trust him to stay more than a couple of seasons anyway. Tom Jurich showed he was win-at-all-costs putting up with him. I expect more from UK.

Do not hire this man. The idiots who make the comparison to Cal don’t understand the difference between arbitrary NCAA rules and actual morals.

This man is not a good person. He is a bad man. He does what is best for him and only him. We do not need that here. There are other coaches that can win and not be total assholes in between. If UK hires this man I will not watch UK football as long as he is here. And if you think I’m some sort of religious crazy who thinks he is immoral for his affairs, not even close.

  58. reedwizard

Geez, how could you not offer him a contract that has no buy out and favors UK with full compliance in whatever UK has concerns about? I think he would take it and we hold most, if not, all of the cards. He is the only home run hire out there unless you get Nick Saban, which is never happening.

As for what he said about UL, he was RIGHT! He should run it up on us, they all should. We suck, have sucked and will continue to suck with another retred coach or coordinator. A coordinator is not going to have the pull to get the bigger name recruits here, but Petrino will. He needs us to build his resume and we need him to build up the program and win. This is a win-win.

I don’t care if he wins football games–those are just football games.. He doesn’t deserve another job and I would be extremely disappointed if he were hired here. We hired Calipari with Memphis just about to get the news they were vacating a FF. Yeah Cal wasn’t implicated but its still baggage and that was with the program he coached. Petrino has baggage but its more his personal life and I definitely see where he might have learned a lesson from his mistakes at Arkansas. If we don’t hire him, UT or Auburn most certainly will interview/hire him and IMHO Mitch Barnhart should bare the repercussions of passing on him for 2nd or 3rd tier hires that don’t work out nearly as well.

To say Petrino is tougher to work with than BCG is a ludicrous statement, which I believe I heard on the radio today. Billy Clyde is an alcoholic; Petrino is not. Bobby isn’t the type that’s going to smile and say hello as he passes a colleague on campus. He’s not going to say please or thank you, ask you how your day is going or how beautiful it is outside. And he sure as hell isn’t going to coddle anyone, whether you’re a player, colleague or member of the media. The way he left the Falcons was shady, but Mitch seems to be in favor of writing letters in similar instances. I don’t blame Bobby for the way he left Atlanta – the NFL is a business chock full of prima donnas. They don’t call it the Not-For-Long league for nothing. And yes, Bobby will go after some younger (of age) biscuit when the opportunity presents itself. He has an open relationship with his wife and the man has a penis. Get over it. We need a guy who knows his X’s and O’s and is a proven winner. If Bobby is truly interested, he’s a no-brainer hire.

Initially, I thought this smells like the buzz surrounding Cal’s hiring, with him having a questionable history and all. But I don’t think it is. UK needed someone that would win. Point blank, period. The difference is, the basketball program really was a desirable job to most coaches in the country, and we probably could have gotten anyone. Football, on the other hand, is not desirable in the least. I say get Petrino in here, give him a chance, and it may pay off. We do know he can win. If he can bring UK Football up to a pedestal where it’s at least a good looking job and a respectable program, who cares if he leaves? At that point, we’ll have plenty more options…

But after reading the article on the courier journal, I think it’s in the best interest of the program to at least talk to the guy. We’re talking about a coach who could win us 8-10 games every season with a possibility of 11. Couple this coach with the 100-150 million dollar bonding we may getting next year, and our football program is looking SOLID. It’s a no-brainer to me, but unfortunately it’s not my call. If Cal left tomorrow, would you not be thankful for what he’s done for us in his three seasons in the Bluegrass? Ideally, you want a coach who stays and wins for extended periods of time, but a winning coach who only stays for 3-4 years is better than settling for mediocrity or losing.

Petrino is Kentucky’s best and only chance to build a winning program, at the present time.

Everyone else is a huge down grade.

If Mitch was smart enough to hire him, UK would win right away and go bowling next season.

If Petrino left after three years, Kentucky would have gone o three bowl games in a row and all of them wouldn’t be the bupkiss bowl for barely having a
winning season. UK would be in great shape to get a “marquee name” the next time around.

If Petrino stays, he will be a Kentucky legend. Why? If you have to ask that question, you are dumber than a box of rocks. The answer: Petrino can win at Kentucky, where everyone else will fail.

This is a huge milestone in Barnharts career and legacy. If he hires Petrino, he will go down as the best AD that UK has ever seen. If he hires some assistant and has to fire him after three years, all the upgrading in the world of the non revenue sports may no save his job.

Petrino might leave after 3 or 4 winning seasons? Probably any coach who is not an alum of UK will leave for a Notre Dame or Florida-type of program with a winning football tradition. In Petrino’s case, where he is looking to redeem himself from national embarrassment, UK could actually put a clause in where he has to pay UK if he doesn’t finish out his contract. And it would have to be more than $100K or $200K. It would have to be $1 million or more.

Petrino and Coach Cal might not be able to coexist? I guarantee Coach Cal would love to have a winning football program to give him yet another tool in his ridiculously large recruiting toolbox. Besides that, basketball is king at UK. If there ever was a clash and it got bad then the football coach, no matter who it is, would be the one signing up for unemployment. Coach Cal is the best college coach there is right now. In any sport. You can make a case for Nick Saban, but he would be about the only one. I don’t think there would be a problem anyway because both could help each other, especially with recruiting.

3rd and most important question. Is BBN really willing to take the pits-of-hell heat that will surely come our way for wanting Barnhart to hire Petrino and then being glad it happens when(if) Barnhart does hire him? It will be absolutely crazy. Everyone will say we sold our soul simply to have a winning football program. Does BBN really think it will be worth it?

The problem is that the goals of the UK administration is not in line with many of the goals of BBN. This isn’t just Mitch, but also Eli, Sandy Bell, and many others. Both the UK administration and fans want to win and both want a great coach. I also think they are willing to spend money on the right coach. However, the UK administration is not willing to change many of the things surrounding the program that hinder football recruiting. Our facilities are lagging behind our SEC counterparts and most importantly they do not want another CAL.

Don’t get me wrong. They like CAL. They like the atmosphere he has created around the program, but they don’t want a football coach that tries to do the kind of things that CAL does. It is much easier to monitor CAL when he essentially maintains a roster of 8 scholarship players and a few walk-ons than a football program that uses all 85 scholarship players. The UK administration wants a coach that wins and generates the support of “BBN” but they also want one that is low maintenance, doesn’t ask for much, and does everything by the book. CAL is the opposite of that. CAL is high maintenance, asks for the moon, and pushes the envelope and that is a large reason why he is so successful. CAL is a big thinker and not the status quo. The UK administration wants someone who is a “status quo” hire that can both win and make the fans happy. That is why Petrino won’t get the job. He is not the status quo.

The state of Kentucky football couldn’t be much worse.
And we we have to get into what Petrino did?

He will be able to clear his name here at UK and get us to win games again. Plus it would make UL really mad just like what they did to us when they hired Pitino.

170 – Are you Bobby Petrino? Big Daddy who happens to like smokin hot young blondes? Just asking…

Why am I excited at the prospect of UK and Petrino? When his name first come up I was totally against it. Is it because I desperately want UK football to win? Is it because I see this subject is approaching 200 comments while the other articles on KSR right now will be lucky to have 50 and the overwhelming majority wants Petrino, too? I know that makes me a backslider, but I still find myself at peace with UK and Petrino. Kentucky football at 8-5 or 9-4 after a bowl game makes feel all warm and fuzzy inside. And 10-3? I would sh!t my slacks!

Would we be selling our souls or simply offering a guy a second chance? Or third, depending on how you view the Atlanta situation. Could he recruit as well now with a tarnished reputation? Ricky P. seems to be doing alright. Pitino wasn’t starting at a new school because he was fired for lying, though. Would he get a bunch of troublemakers? His players at Arkansas have had several off the field issues this season. But, he isn’t there with them now so has that made a difference? Did his Louisville players have a bunch of off the field issues?

Yeah, Petrino has had some drama in his past. Is the ridicule that BBN will surely get worth giving him another chance? I won’t be sad if Barnhart says no, but if he does hire him I’ll support him. As long as he stays drama free. Above all else, one thing no one can say is that he cheats. He runs a clean program which is paramount at Kentucky.

Look at all you “fans” clamoring for this hire. If we hire this man, who has now left 3…let me repeat that…3 schools worse off, lied and cheated on his wife, repeatedly lied to his AD’s, disappeared from an NFL job in the middle of the night, well then we are proving all of those UofL fans right, that all we care about is winning.

There is no argument that Petrino is not a cheat, liar or anything else. No debate.

Just blows my mind that we can sit here as a fanbase and talk about the class of Joker and how much we wish he had won so that he could continue to be our coach, and then sit here and beg Petrino to come. Stupid, stupid fans.

And let’s be honest, most of us know that if Petrino had his choice, he’ll be at Auburn, so when this doesn’t work out guess who everyone gets to complain about more? Barnhart. Just dumb.

Are you kidding me right now?? I have read every post on this and I don’t understand what’s wrong with some of you people. First off you say you’re sick of losing so get rid of Joker no matter what. Joker is gone then you talk about how awesome he was but he just wasn’t the right one for the job cause he can’t win. Next you say we need a big name HC who will WIN at all costs and the names who have been mentioned are just not big enough. Now Petrino shows interest but you don’t want him due to loose morals and attitude problems. COME ON do you want us to win or do not? These kids play their hearts out and get crushed by teams they could compete with given direction. Do they not deserve a chance to win?
I live in the South where football is all that matters. We are a joke in the SEC – that can change. I grew going to UK football games and my family still have their season tickets and attend all home games. MB has to move quick on finding us a coach – he’s not an idiot. There will probably be 3 other SEC schools who will be hiring at the end of the season as well. If we don’t get Petrino someone else will and we will be losing to him. Our kids deserve a chance to have a relevant football program. Our kids deserve to hold their heads high on that field and know they have a chance for a WIN on GAMEDAY.
Stop being so negative about Petrino and give the man a second chance. We have enough negativity surrounding the situation. Fans quit going to games and let their tickets go so we could get a winning coach. Well here he is folks. Put your personal judgments aside and think about the players for a second cause you damn sure weren’t thinking of them when you stopped showing up to support them at our home games…

On second thought after reading the full interview with his father, I have decided Petrino falls somewhere on the autism spectrum. The eery ability to remember interiors of all recruits’ houses as child while on the road with his dad, the inability to connect with players and the supernatural ability to be an offensive guru. This could explain his bizarre behavior over the years as he leaves jobs suddenly without any thought for promises, fans or players. I remember reading after he left about how almost no Falcon player had actually spoken to him. If he is on the autism spectrum then this explains his behavior and hence makes hiring him much easier.

Those of us who really understand football know how important it is to get Petrino if we can. It’s not easy to be a top-notch coach and change a program’s fortunes, but some people just got “it” — and Petrino is one. The guy knows how to compete with the very best and can “coach up” like no other. In addition, Bobby runs a tight ship. The kids will be disciplined and will get good grades or else. The guy doesn’t play around. I can’t imagine more of a home run hire that will give Kentucky INSTANT NATIONAL CREDIBILITY. Also, can you name another hire in which we can flip the momentum on Louisville so quickly?

Seven reasons UK should not even consider Bobby Petrino:

    1. He’s an ass and has no class.
    2. I’m pretty sure he spent his entire time at UL mocking the UK football program every chance he got.
    3. He’s an ass and has no class.
    4. If he would come to UK and win, the first opportunity he has to bolt for a better job, he will, and he may not even wait to the end of the year. In fact, he might even leave at half time of a game and not come back.
    5. He’s an ass and has no class.

That is exactly right. it’s like Pitino being available at the exact time Louisville was looking, or Spurrier getting fired by the Redskins at the same time Lou Holtz retired. The timing is too good to be true.

Here’s a question to ponder. Everyone says Petrino comes with baggage. But, doesn’t the UK football job also come with HUGE baggage? Career Killer. Laughingstock. What has been more egregious, BP’s antics off the field, or UK’s performance ON the filed?

To compare a major alcoholic to someone without substance abuse issues is incredibly ridiculous. The man has a different personality that can rub people the wrong way, but there is no doubt he is one of the more successful football coaches we have seen in the modern era of the game. There is no denying that. That is the point of being a football coach — to be a winner. If he is a little difficult to work with then so be it. Get the f— out of the man’s way if you want him to win for your program. It’s something you just have to deal with to let the man do the job to the best of his ability. It’s who is. In management classes you quickly learn that a good leader learns to deal with different personalities — especially if the “different personality” of somebody who works for you allows your business to have great success. You, as a manager, need to learn to cater to that. He may be a little prickly. Oh well. If you are Barnhart you are being extremely selfish to all of UK football if you are looking to hire “a friend” type to be your football coach. I’m sorry Barnhart, I don’t care if you don’t find friendship with your new football coach. I care about UK football. First and foremost.

@ Catfish (comment 251) How many chances do you give a guy? It’s not like the affair was his first incident. There’s been crap everywhere he has been. And the PR nightmare that comes with Petrino? Does UK really want that? Not to mention the scrutiny after that hire?

Why do so many fans have a short memory? This guy has lied and broke Arkansas’ rules. He is a huge waste. I remember Louisville players saying how much they didn’t like him. So why do fans want him so bad? I can deal with getting a coach with some baggage but not a coach like him, not a coach that used to coach at Louisville.

I met Bobby a few times at a golf club we both belonged to here in Louisville. The man was a polite individual who came off to me as a devoted and loving father. I witnessed him often playing with his daughter and being a very encouraging dad. If him and his daughter ever played through our group he would always talk to our group and be very kind. People always act like he is just this dickhead who has no manners or morals. It seems kind of silly to me.

@catfaninohio, I agree he has baggage, you’re right. And he has had numerous chances. But so has our beloved basketball coach and I’m sure most of us, too. I want to finally compete in the SEC. If we can’t hire Smart (why would he want to come here?), obvious 1st choice, we HAVE to take a risk to get a coach that we all know that can win at this level (Bobby or Tressel). if not, we stay at the bottom of the conference and we lose out in revenue, recruits, and top of the line facilities in other sports besides basketball the money from selling out very game will bring.

Furthermore why not hire Petrino.. Recruits flock to the spotlight and media attention, who in the country could bring that to Commonwealth than Petrino. I wish our tree hugging fans would stop being so lame. So what he got caught cheating on his wife. Should this blackball him from coaching? I think not!!!! It has to be him or Kirby!!! No one else in the country can shake up the recruiting world faster than these guys.. Go ahead Mitch hire one of “your guys” like Joker or Billy G. Last time I checked you have never made a great coaching hire at UK. Cal was forced on you so don’t take credit for him. Brooks was not terrible if being mediocre is your goal.. @292 It’s not just about cheating on his wife. Of all his “sins” that would be the least in my view-those things happen and would not be a disqualifier to me. My issue is his shamelessly leaving for other jobs constantly. Any little bit of success at UK will ensure he leaves-and it could even be midseason. It wasn’t just once, but three times. He burns bridges every where. Louisville players threw a party when he left because they hated him so much. The affair and possible sexual harassment were just the icing on the cake.

That means two years becasue Petrino will not stay at UK for a third season, regardless of his record. He would be a great hire. He knows how to recruit successfully against all the other major schools. He has a bit of luggage. People deserve 2nd chances and if Kentucky is “serious” about really being a legitimate football team then coach Petrino would be a GREAT hire. If Kentucky just wants to try and go 7-5 or 6-6 each year then someone else would be the choice. Once the football program starts competing and winning everyone will forget about his sketchy past. The girl at Arkansas for a man his age and his looks would be hard for a lot of people to walk away from. He was severely burned and has payed dearly. I am all about character. I also believe a man learns and grows from mistakes. I would be willing to bet that he is a changed man and a better man from the ordeals he has created for himself. Its all about recruiting and he is proven and would be a super hire for the Wildcats.
