Bobby Petrino endorsed by Joe B. Hall

Perhaps the Bobby Petrino to Kentucky movement will begin picking up steam after words from Kentucky basketball legend Joe B. Hall backed the former Louisville and Arkansas head coach.

Joker Phillips is merely a placeholder for next head man at Kentucky. Names are flying in from all over, from Kirby Smart at Alabama, to Sonny Dykes at Louisiana Tech, to Neil Brown at Texas Tech, to Dirk Koetter of the Atlanta Falcons, all of whom would be a solid addition to the program.

But Bobby Petrino is a name that has Big Blue Nation divided.

It seems many are strongly in favor of the offensive mind to inject some life into a roster full of potential. He would likely ignite passion among even the most cynical Kentucky football fans, and bring an immediate sense of winning to the program.

But others are hedging their bets that Petrino would already be thinking about his next job — as he has demonstrated numerous times in the past. Not to mention the character flaws he has showcased over the course of his career, most notably the drama that unfolded in Arkansas that ultimately lead to his termination.

Joe B. Hall is willing to give Petrino the benefit of the doubt. Hall’s son-in-law Mike Summers coached under Petrino at Louisville, Atlanta and Arkansas before coming to Kentucky to be the offensive line coach in 2010. Hall says he has heard another side to all of those negative stories about Petrino.

Larry Vaught spoke with Hall to get his thoughts on the situation.

On Petrino’s secret meetings with Auburn while still head coach at Louisville:

“I know there is a lot of misinformation about Petrino and looking for other jobs when he was at Louisville, especially the situation at Auburn,” said Hall. “People were wanting to talk to him. He was not out chasing jobs and would not have left Louisville if he had not been approached about jobs. He was very loyal to Louisville. The AD and president at Auburn pressure him to meet with them. They flew up to southern Indiana to talk to him. He told them it was a waste of time but he had been at Auburn as offensive coordinator and respected those people. All he did was talk. Nothing else.”

On leaving the Falcons job in his first season with three games remaining to take the job at Arkansas:

“The situation was not him leaving team with three games to go. He went into management to bench a couple of starters that were causing problems and they told him he couldn’t do it,” Hall said. “He said was to have complete control but they said he couldn’t bench players they were paying big money. He told them then he would be not be back the next year and they said he was finished now. He was going to finish the year. He was not going to walk out. But they changed the locks on the door so he could not get back to the locker room. There was a lot more to that story.”

On the comparisons between Petrino being a similar hire to Billy Gillispie:

“After Gillipsie, it was so important to get UK back on the winning side that [UK officials] overlooked what they were afraid of the first time with hiring Calipari. They brought him in and it has not been a bad situation at all,” Hall said. “Calipari was different in that he was still a winner and had not done anything morally wrong. A lot of his problems with his perception but the NCAA had never come down on him personally in any way.”

There weren’t any specific comments directly relating to the motorcycle accident and affair at Arkansas.

Petrino is a winner. But is the baggage worth it?

I`m not a big Petrino fan, but if we can get a clause in his contract about not filling it, we owe him nothing and he owes us, then I would be for it. I really believe we would get involved with the 5 Trinity players if he is hired.

Enough with the “BBN is divided” crap. Its pure fantasy. The fan base is overwhelmingly behind the hiring of Petrino, likely more so than any other coach. For every person you hear express doubts about BP, you will hear 2 more express doubts about Sonny Dykes, David Cutcliffe, or Phil Fulmer.

  15. Why?????????
    7:43 pm November 11, 2012 Permalink

Why doesn’t anyone at KSR understand what a no compete clause is? Or a small part of the fan base? From his Arkansas contract:

As part of the new agreement, Petrino will receive an increase in his average annual compensation to a total of $3.56 million a year during the length of the agreement. The increase to Coach Petrino’s compensation package will be paid with athletic department-generated revenues and private gift support and will not include any taxpayer dollars or student fees. The new agreement will also expand the non-compete clause in Coach Petrino’s current agreement to include all Southeastern Conference institutions, rather than being limited to western division institutions only.

That means he can’t leave to go to another SEC school!!!! It isn’t rocket science, please report facts!!!! Hire him now, put in a no compete clause and move on.

BBN divided?? After the Vaught article, it seems to me from talking to people, reading comments, listening to call in shows, etc. that about 90% of the fan base are clamoring for Mitch to make a move on getting Petrino in here now. This is a turning point for UK football. We have young talent, especially at the skill positions, and hopefully 85 million in funding for football coming. Getting a proven top tier coach like Petrino is a no brainer. Make it happen Mitch!

As I said in an earlier post, if what coach Hall says is true, then that means that BP fell on the sword to protect both the U. Auburn brass, and the Atlanta Falcons owners. It would have been easy for Petrino to tell the same story that Joe B did, but instead he took the high road and let the public think it was his doing.
    This changes everything!

  46. SeoulCat

    Seriously, Stuart?

“But others are hedging their bets that Petrino would already be thinking about his next job — as he has demonstrated numerous times in the past.” And then you proceed to follow up that little bit with quotes from Coach Hall that say the exact opposite.

Did you read anything that Joe B. said? There is a lot of misinformation out there. Petrino left UofL for Atlanta. So what? It took a few years of coaching at Louisville before he left, didn’t it? Did you expect him to coach there for life? Cal jumped ship from UMass to take the Nets job. Are you going to hold that against him? Petrino left the Falcons mid season because, if you believe Joe B–and I sure as hell do, he was forced out. You spin the news worse than Fox. Stop it.

And the idea that the fan base is divided? Please. I guess if you scream it loud enough, often enough, you might convince the fans that it’s true, right? Not gonna happen, bub.

The amount of buzz this has caused with him “potentially” being hired has given UK football more air time that they have received in 15 years, this is a perfect fit, hell even Dickie V knows it, this divided amongst the fan base sh!t is puzzling, everything I have read and heard is 75 to 80 pro BP, If Mitch hires a retread(Phat Phil, Cutcliff) or a up and coming coach(Derek Dooley) he has sealed his fate to be incompetent, with the a la “the drunken Texan” hire already being on his resume, now we even have top recruits saying they would give UK a look if BP is brought in, the man would bring us up from the SEC cellar, opposing teams wouldn’t be able to pencil UK in as a “win” on there schedule a year in advance, If Mitch doesn’t have the ballz to hire him, UT or Auburn will and he will be handing us our a$$es every year and us as fans need to send Mitch an email, letting him know what a sorry POS of sh!t AD he is for passing up such an oppurnitiy, cause he wanted to hire a retread or a coach that’s nice and kind.

    Petrino is a POS.

If Joe B.’s daughter was the victim, it’d be a different story.

    Joe B. loves UofK.

A love for which must be tantamount to to love of progeny.

And a love for the continued union thereof.

Therefore, Joe B. must be blind to the fact that petrino is a worthless POS, so capable of breaking the hearts of UofK fans, his son-in-law-, and his daughter.

Petrino is NOT an answer to the solution.

He is a part of the problem.

    Fire the thought now.

    Do NOT hire the POS.

He is a worthless, traitorous, bastige.

Worthy of nothing. Joe B. should run from any ass-ociation.

Petrino being hired immediately makes us relevant. Max Smith and Patrick Towles would have to be thrilled if this goes down. Dave Baker was on the Joe B. show this week and he said that UK should hire Petrino. If Petrino was as bad as some people are trying to make him out to be he would know about it. Since he has covered the SEC for years, and knows almost all of the SEC media and athletics people, he would call him out if it was warranted.

Dear #88. Here’s what Christianity has to do with it. Basic Christian teaching says that we are to love others who
persecute us, those who hate us, and those who use us. We are also to forgive each other. Not once. Not seventy
times. But seventy times seven times. Which actually means, as Christian scholars agree, not the exact sum of
seventy times seven, but the phrase “seventy times seven” being a code for meaning, “Endlessly”. So, basic
Christian teaching is to love each other, even people who are unloveable, and unforgiveable, and love them
anyway, and forgive them anyway. Endlessly. So what our brother #85 meant, I’m sure, is that being
a Christian man, Mitch would give Mr. Petrino the opportunity to turn our football team around, even
though all statistics in the secular world would point to Mr. Petrino being very shady character. Mitch,
being a Christian man, would hire Mr. Petrino immediately, with the caveat that while he may be forgiven
by Mitch personally, and by God generally, any untoward activities sullying the school’s or the players’
well-being, will be rewarded with a pink slip. Amen.

That, or Matt is worried that having Petrino around means that he will be shunned by the football brass that comes in. No one in the media wants to be cut off, and Petrino is a notoriously private person who does not suffer fools. I like Matt and appreciate all that he has done for BBN, but I get the feeling that the BCG experiment left such a bad taste in his mouth(word around the campfire is that BCG publicly humiliated Matt on a few occasions, hence the constant ripping of Billy by Matt ever since he left) that he doesn’t want anything to do with another surly head coach. If so, Matt needs to swallow that pride and get behind what is best for BBN.

Let’s draw on the past in order to evaluate this prospective football head coach hire.
Curci, FB probation…Joe B, $100 hand shakes and NCAA BB sanctions…Sutton, Emmory cash package and BB probation….Mummie, FB probation…Billy G, abusive and off court problems.

Many, many, many UK fans continued to support all the above, when there was absolutely zero reason to do so.
Given that record, why would UK not hire Petrino? I do not condone his moral character, however he has no NCAA problems that I am aware of.

I am willing to bet that many of the fans that were outraged with the NCAA, when thay busted UK for the aforementioned issues, are now making an issue over the possible hiring of Petrino. If you are one of those fans then maybe a step back to reflect is in order.

I have followed UK all my life, however, fan or no fan, the truth is the truth…good, bad or ugly. So, let’s think about giving Petrino another chance, hopefully he has or will change.
