Bob Stoops calls tales of SEC dominance “propoganda”

Mark Stoops’ brother, Oklahoma head coach Bob Stoops, caused a bit of a Twitter stir today with some of his comments on the SEC and its dominance over college football in recent years. Bob Stoops believes that the top of the SEC is strong, calling the very best teams “elite,” but that the rest of the conference might not be as dominant as everyone says.

“So they’ve had the best team in college football,” Stoops said, according to the Tulsa World. “They haven’t had the whole conference. Because, again, half of ’em haven’t done much at all. I’m just asking you. You tell me.”

The Oklahoma coach went on to explain his somewhat shaky reasoning…

“So you’re listening to a lot of propoganda that gets fed to you,” he said. “Again, you can look at the top two, three, four, five, six teams, and you can look at the bottom six, seven, eight, whatever they are. How well are they doing?”

The article from the Sports Yahoo brings up a few relevant points to the argument that go against Bob Stoops’ comments, such as (but not limited to):

1) Missouri went to 7 straight bowl games in its final 7 seasons in the Big 12 (Oklahoma’s conference). Missouri promptly went 5-7 when joining the much stronger SEC.

2) Only 5 teams in the SEC missed out on bowl games last year, but 1 of the 5 won the national championship just a few years ago (Auburn), and another was a top 10 school 2 years ago (Arkansas).

3) Vanderbilt, considered to be the SEC doormat for years, made a bowl game last season and can no longer be looked past as an easy win.

#3 nailed it! Today’s OU would NOT be an elite team in the SEC. They would be a step below at best. 8-4 maybe 9-3. If they were in the SEC West last year they would have beat Auburn, Ark and maybe MSU! Maybe….

Just look at recruiting the last few years. Other conferences are top heavy, just like they are talent wise: Ohio State and Michigan…drop-off, Oklahoma and Texas…drop-off; USC and Oregon drop-off, the entire SEC no drop-off.

The talent is better top to bottom which is why the conference has been well ahead of others in NFL talent, and has performed well overall in bowl games since the streak began.

Stoops and Urban Meyer have to make comments like this to try to get the recruits to change their perception of what’s happening.

These other conferences are also more top heavy and predictable when teams have success. Do you think any other conference could have a champion other than the top 1 or 2 teams in the conference? Auburn, Florida, LSU, and Alabama have won it. Georgia and Alabama was the real championship last year.

Now teams like Ole Miss are getting top recruits. Bob Stoops, “you mad bro”?

All Stoops was trying to do with those comments. Very well said #7.

Alabama won the National Championship this year and the only team to beat them………..another SEC team. I’ll put Alabama, LSU, Georgia, Florida, Texas A&M, South Carolina against any other conferences top 6 any day of the week.Name me another conference whose sixth best team could compete with SC?

This coming from the coach of the most overrated football team to begin every season… or at least right there with Fla State. Stoops should worry about beating the Notre Dame’s of the world. Leave the BCS to the real teams.

Thats some shaky logic. Look at the bottom of any conference and ask what those teams have done. Especially when you consider they’re only at the bottom because they get beat down by the rest of the SEC. The SEC non-conference record is pretty darn solid.

Bob Stoops is an idiot. He is just passed that Texas am absolutely destroyed OU in their bowl game… Oklahoma and OSU… The best second place teams in college football…. Plus how you get to a title game and proceed to get beat 52-17?
