Bluegrass Weekend

At the old site, Beisner and I believed that horse racing would be a good supplement to all of the UK news.  When we asked Matt if we could bring Broseph along, he said it was cool, so long as his posts were put up in the evening.  Thus, on Thursdays and Saturdays around 7:15, you will see his picks.  I think he tried to directly add Broseph as a writer, and something went wrong–or that was his subtle attempt at telling us not to post horse racing.  Well, either way, if Broseph’s picks are garbage, break his knee-caps, not mine.  Enjoy!

Julien All right, Leparoux, now you’re just showin’ off!

I know that horse racing isn’t exactly a mainstream sport, but I also know that a good percentage of this viewership knows the greatness that is Keeneland tail and Derby drunkery, so I thought you guys wouldn’t mind me stoppin’ by every now and again to make some picks and keep you updated on the Derby front. I will be picking against the spread for Keeneland from Friday to Sunday each week. If you were fortunate enough to play last weekend’s picks, you only left the track down 20 cents for the weekend after $174 worth of bets (not including beer money before, during, and after the races).

So, I am going to take the horses I listed at 2 across-the-board; that way, even if we whiff on the entire day, we only leave down sixty bucks or so. I will only list the names as I do not have the official program numbers, and all odds are obtained from equibase.com. AGAIN, ALL PICKS ARE AGAINST THE FAVORITE.

Bluegrass Stakes: Chalk: Pyro (even) Pick: Visionaire (6/1)

Race 10: Chalk: French Beret (7/2) Pick: Pickapocket (5/1)

As far as the Bluegrass, awfully tough to pick against Pyro, but I did my best. I think that Cool Coal Man can round out that trifecta in that race. Hopefully, I’ll have my picks for Sunday in the next couple of days after the odds are posted. Looks like the weather is a little shaky, but this is still the biggest weekend of the year at Keeneland, so get out there and enjoy it.

Anything you need to know about Derby right here.

And if you’re not sure about Pyro, watch his stretch run in the Risen Star:
