BLUE-WHITE football game report

Live from the UK Athletics Department, here is a rundown of the festivities at the Blue-White game in Lexington:

Kentucky redshirt freshman Alfonso Smith (Louisville, Ky.) racked up 97 yards on the ground Saturday and the offense compiled 421 yards of total offense to lead the Blue to a 46-41 win over the White in the team’s annual Blue-White game in Commonwealth Stadium.
The game was played in an offense (Blue) vs. defense (White) format in which the offense received points for first downs, field goals, and touchdowns while the defense scored points for stopping the offense and creating turnovers (scoring system listed at bottom of this release).

Smith led a potent UK rushing game that accumulated 162 yards on the ground. The Wildcats completed 24-of-37 passes for 259 yards in the air, led by junior quarterback Andre’ Woodson (Radcliff, Ky.), who was 8-for-11 for 71 yards with a touchdown pass. Sophomore Curtis Pulley (Hopkinsville, Ky.) completed 9-of-11 passes for 63 yards, while senior Rocco Maragas (Canton, Ohio) was 3-for-5 for 63 yards and a touchdown.

Sophomore DeMoreo Ford (LaGrange, Ga.) led the Kentucky receiving corps with two catches for 65 yards with a touchdown. The wide receiver also completed a nifty 50-yard pass on an end-around in the fourth quarter.

Sophomore linebacker Ben McGrath (Milford, Ohio) led the way for the White, totaling eight total tackles and forcing a fumble. Junior defensive end Travis Day (Columbus, Ga.) and sophomore linebacker Johnny Williams (Neptune Beach, Fla.) followed with six tackles each.

The Kentucky defense set the tone in the first quarter as the White quickly forced a three-and-out on the opening series to go ahead 3-0. The offense was able to manage a single first down on its next possession, but again the defense came up with a stop forcing another Tim Masthay (Murray, Ky.) punt.

Freshman quarterback Will Fidler (Henderson, Ky.) was intercepted on the next series by sophomore strong safety Adam Richey (Nicholasville, Ky.) to extend the defense’s advantage to 10-1 with 5:22 left in the opening quarter. The Blue only notched one more first down on the quarter and trailed 15-2 heading into the second period.

After forcing a fourth-down stop to begin the second frame, the White’s Robbie McAtee (Louisville, Ky.) blocked a Masthay punt and returned it for a touchdown to put the defense ahead 25-3. From there, the Blue began to find its groove, compiling three consecutive first downs before Smith took a Pulley handoff nine yards into the end zone for the offense’s first touchdown, moving them within 25-13 after an extra point by sophomore J.J. Housley (Hazard, Ky.).

Maragas then completed a pass to Terrell Bankhead (San Diego, Calif.) who ran it in from 18 yards out for the score to bring the offense within two points, 25-23. Late in the second quarter, Woodson connected on a 59-yard touchdown pass to Ford to put the Blue in front 30-28. The Blue entered the halftime locker room ahead 31-28.

Out of intermission, the offense continued to thrive, notching four consecutive first downs before Tony Dixon (Parrish, Ala.) took a one-yard handoff from Pulley for a touchdown. After a Brian Scott (Morehead, Ky.) extra point, the Blue led 42-31 and they led 43-31 heading into the final period of play.

In a shortened fourth quarter, the White made several late stops to come within four, but the Blue held on for the final 46-41 margin.
