ESPN reports that the Big Ten (or is it Big Eleven?) officials are in “accelerated” talks about the expansion of the conference. Expansion would begin as early as the 2013 football season. Many names have been thrown about as possible candidates to join the Big Ten and round it out to an even twelve with two divisions. The most notable names are Syracuse, Notre Dame, Pittsburgh, Rutgers and Missouri.
Notre Dame turned down a Big Ten expansion attempt in 1999, so it’s unlikely the bruised feelings would come a’knockin at that door again, so that leaves us with Cuse, Pitt, Rutgers and Mizzou as possible candidates. Smart money is most likely on Pitt or Mizzou. I have a hard time believing that Syracuse would leave a basketball-rich Big East for a conference that most likely would make their football program a doormat. I mean, they’re a doormat already and they’re in the Big East for football. It just wouldn’t be kosher.
So I’m betting on Pitt. Decent football program which could occasionally contend in the Big Ten. The basketball program is a perfect fit for the grind-it-out style the Big Ten employs. What say you? Who would you most like to see move to the Big Ten, if you even care in the least?
