Tonight brings the first of the Regional Semi-final games and the one that I am most looking forward to is the battle between the Big Baby of college basketball and Glen Davis. The Davis-Redick matchup at first glance seems a little bit of a media creation. The two players dont even play the same position. One is a college senior who has had a career full of accolades while the other is relatively unknown on a national scale. Nevertheless they are two personalities in a sport that seems to produce exciting action, but very little in the way of mesmerizing people.
Earlier this year I expressed some admiration on this blog for Redick and even mentioned that I was becoming a fan. I now know that I was lying. Seeing his face on television for the last few weeks, recognizing the similarities between he and that goober Wojo and being innodated with Coach K commercials has now renewed my Duke hatred to a high degree. But I do respect his talent.
But it is that contrast that makes Big Baby such a favorite of mine. Not only do I respect his talent, his quick footwork for a man of his size and his love of the ladies, but I also find him highly likeable. He is an engaging personality, killing difficult questions with a smile and an occasional good line. He is not Charles Barkley, but he is as close as you will see in this personality-deprived world of University-controlled player interviews.
I dont think LSU will win….John Brady is still the coach. But I will be satisfied with one “Magloire-Wojo” moment from the Baby and Redick. Is that too much to ask?
