Kentucky’s tournament hopes took a major hit with tonight’s 9-3 loss to Missouri. Tanner Houck tossed a complete game for the Tigers and Zack Brown struggled over six innings for UK. Missouri led 6-0 before UK could even try and play catch up. The Tigers strung together five consecutive hits in the fifth as their lead swelled to six. Brown went seven innings and allowed eight runs on 12 hits. Zach Reks drove in two runs on two hits and Evan White went 1/4 with an RBI. UK is now 30-24 and 13-15 in the SEC. Here are the notes from the loss.
Tanner Houck was fantastic- The projected number one pick in 2017 was great for Missouri. Houck struck out ten in the complete game. He was very efficient and consistent on the mound. Houck walked only one and allowed eight hits to post a WHIP of 1.00 in his fifth win of the season.
Missouri’s offense attacked Brown- Zack Brown continued his season long struggles with tonight’s performance. Five different Tigers had multiple hits, including Ryan Howard and Brett Bond’s three hit games. The five consecutive hits in the fifth killed any chance that UK had to win the game.
Zach Reks continued a strong season- The Air Force transfer is now hitting .345 this season after going 2/4 tonight. Reks has 22 RBIs and seven homers in his first season at UK. His .524 OBP leads the team. The most impressive fact is that he is the only regular starter with more walks than strikeouts.
Where does this team stand?- This was a tough hit to UK’s tournament hopes. To feel really good about making the Field of 64, the BatCats need to win the next two against Mizzou then win one or two next week in Hoover. If none of that happens, the program could be looking at not making the postseason for the second straight season. Coach Henderson and UK can’t withstand another horrible end of the season.
