Barnhart expects to have a “marquee” home game

Matt just wrapped up a one-hour interview with Mitch Barnhart in Lexington for KSTV and one of the topics the UK athletic director discussed was the end of the series with IU and the schedule moving forward. According to Barnhart, they’re working hard to replace what would’ve been the biggest home game of the season.

“I am confident there will be a marquee non-conference home game at Rupp this year,” he said.

Who would you like to see UK play? And what “marquee” teams do you think will come to Rupp?

I’m skeptical. You usually only get big name teams to come to Rupp as part of a home and home contract, which apparently we aren’t doing now. Who would agree to just come here and play one game? I’m thinking only someone like Murray or some other mid-major program.

Cal better watch his scheduling practices or he will have a war with the fans on his hands. Maybe not all of them, but the season ticket holders certainly, especially the ones paying huge bucks for their seats (i.e. the most influential fans). No one is going to want to continue to make five digit donations to watch games like Portland and Lamar all season long. He’s going to have to find a way to bring big-name opponents to Rupp or the schedule will not contain his input.

It won’t be Duke, we already play them this coming season. It won’t be Mich St, we play them in 2013. It won’t be the Big East, because of UL and a away game that will probably be Cincy., although Syracuse would be sweet. Ohio State would be nice, but Kansas is reportedly looking for a home and home since INDIANA backed out on them. After that a PAC 12 team.

#42 put down your checkbook and brandy for a second. No one is going to war with Cal over the schedule. He just won a NC, he holds all the power and you better get used to it. Influential fan or not, Cal will always get his way and deservedly so. If you want to complain, try remembering Billy Clyde, because things can get a whole lot worse. How can you seriously make a veiled threat at Cal?

How do you guys do it? I’m talking about those who live in Jefferson County that have to deal with those freaking IDIOTS that root for Loserville. I’m in a pissing contest on an Eric Crawford piece that he was trying to rationalize Cal’s dropping IU. So help me, you guys are my HERO. For they are the dumbest of the DUMB. Do they have to told when to breathe? And I thought Hoosiers were stupid.

Hoo Hoo, why? Why do you come out of the closet one month and five days after we win the Championship? Stupidity? YEP that’s right. OK we bitched and moaned about Knight not wanting a home and home series, NOW you come out of the woodwork and whine about UK wanting to play IU in Lucus oil Stadium….FOR THE NEXT TWO YEARS!!!!!!
Crean said he wanted the students to be at the game and they’d have to travel 60 miles to go to it…..Hell IU students go that far for a six pack of beer and a joint. But they can’t travel that far for a basketball game. I know……. I dated an IU grad.

It won’t be Duke or Mich. St – we already play Duke this year in Atlanta and we play Sparty next year in the same Invitational in 2013.

It won’t be Syracuse – Boeheim never schedules away games pre-conference.

It would have to be a home and home or a conference challenge. If it’s a home/home, I hope it’s Kansas. By the same token, if it’s a conference challenge, I hope it’s the Big 12 and we play either Kansas or Texas this year. With the Mizzou and Tech in the SEC, there would be some great match ups with Big 12 opponents.

    61. How is that a veiled threat? I love Cal and everything he has done at UK. He’s one of the best things to ever happen to this program. But if you think that season-ticket holders will be happy with a non-conference slate of a bunch of teams outside the top 100 in the RPI, you’re dead wrong. I’m always going to support Cal but the watering down of the schedule Duke-style is disappointing. When there are no decent OOC home games, people will gripe.

Coach Cal’s Calculator – You miss the point. If the current big money seat holders are unhappy with the non-conference home schedule, they will not simply give up their seats to those in line. Instead they will be in Barnhart & Capilouto’s ear/pocket to make sure the schedule is upgraded.

My preferred picks – UNC (renew it), Ohio St, WVU, Kansas. But as others have said, will real marquee teams even be willing to do a very short term home & home, as Cal is proposing? Unless they are facing a similar scheduling problem (lack of marquee home games), what’s in it for them?
