KSR readers, much like the mailman, you continue to deliver. We are now on our sixth chapter of the aUKward Fan Photo series. If you’ve missed any of the prior entries, here they are.
Up to this point we’ve had oversized jerseys, gold chains, belly button rings, Hooters’ outfits, and face paint. We’ve had horrendously decorated mantles and a guy caught staring at a cheerleader’s behind. I’m excited about the direction we have this going. I wish Antoine Walker could invest in awkward Fan Photos, because our stock is going to continue going up.
Speaking of ‘Toine, tonight Drew Tipton of Catlanta, GA delivers the goods.
She writes: “Hey Aaron, I was born in Pikeville but my family moved to Lexington when I was 3. My parents and sister still live there. I went to college at Furman University (whoo-hooo Frank Selvy) and now I live in Atlanta and work as an accountant. [Editors note: I had to google Frank Selvy. He once had a 100 point game for Furman in the 90’s. That’s a lot of points.] I’d like to think I grew out of my awkward stage/nerdiness from my photo, but I suppose the fact that I’m an accountant doesn’t quite help my argument. I’ve been a UK fan since birth. Both of my parents are from Lexington and I grew up going to the games at Rupp. I went to the Sweet 16/Elite 8 in Atlanta this past year and just got tickets to the Champions Classic in November. Love some Catlanta. My older sister was nice enough to send me this gem of a photo from “UK day” in elementary school. I’m still trying to decide which was worse: the double chin or the Antoine Walker jersey. Go Big Blue!”
Drew, just so you know, if I was listing the things I noticed in this picture in order, the double chin would be last. Also, (I’m showing my age little here) I thought it was a Mashburn jersey. And if we are being completely honest, KSR readers, I thought Drew was a boy until we exchanged a couple of emails about the photo.
Here are my observations (in order):
1.) Pom Pom Hair. Look, I’ve done it. You’ve done it. Everyone has taken a pom pom, put it on their head, and put on a hat over it. But Drew has done it, taken a picture of it, AND worn it to school. I can’t imagine how annoying that must have been.
2.) The turtleneck. Think hard, you guys. Can you think of the last time you saw a non school teacher or bank teller wear a turtleneck? I can’t. In fairness to Drew, turtleneck/dickie popularity was at it’s all time height during the time period this photo was taken.
3.) The hat/button combo. The pom pom and the white hat with the huge blue “K” was not a spirited enough look for Drew. She looked in the mirror and said “You know what this outfit is missing? A HUGE UK pin. Yep, gotta get that pinned right off to the side… Perfect.” Drew, agree to agree.
4.) The glasses. Once upon a time, I also had a pair of horrible glasses. I’m not sure why I ever had them. I have 20/20 vision. But for a period of time I had some red framed glasses that were similar in style to the glasses Sally Jesse Raphael wore. I’ll give you a pass on the glasses, Drew. Lens Crafter’s design game struggled in the 90’s.
5.) The jersey. This ‘Toine jersey is either from the ’94-95 season or the first half of the ’95-96 season (before UK switched to the denim). It’s APEX. You know how I know? I had the blue Tony Delk version. In fact, I still have it. Some of you probably do too.
6.) The double chin. I blame it on the turtleneck.
