Assembly Hall commemorates Indiana’s win over Kentucky

(H/T @G2_Blog)

What does Indiana basketball do when it goes 27-9, reaches the Sweet 16, and finishes 16th in final poll? It commemorates the hell out of it, of course.

Indiana basketball has a new display in Assembly Hall commemorating its magical mediocre 2011-12 season. The display features newspaper articles and game balls from three home wins (high-five!) and the jersey Christian Watford wore when the Hoosiers beat Kentucky four months before Kentucky beat Indiana in the NCAA Tournament.

Is that a Sweet 16 shirt?????

I think it is.

Good job, Hoosiers.

“For years, ordinary fans have rewarded University of Kentucky basketball players with a loyalty that is nationally known. What is less known is that a small group of boosters has been giving the players something extra: a steady stream of cash. The cash has come in various amounts – as little as $20 and as much as $4,000 or more – and it has come often. UK players have received what they call ‘hundred-dollar handshakes’ in the Rupp Arena locker room after games.”–

“Once, I was on a flight with Rupp and sat with him in the first-class section. He had about six Kentucky bourbons in less than an hour and was about halfway to the wind. I told him that I was an attorney who represented some basketball players. Now, I had never met the man, and the first significant thing he said to me was, ‘The trouble with the ABA is that there are too many ni–er boys in it now.’ I sat there just stunned. That just killed my image of Adolph Rupp the great coach. Maybe it was because he had too much to drink, but even so…” — Loose Balls by Terry Pluto, Simon & Schuster, 1990, pg. 241.

We may be the only team in the history of any sport to storm the field when we lost to LSU in football, lol (well, maybe except for that one football game when the band member got ran over). Can’t help it, but that is pretty embarrassing. There is probably a similar shrine somewhere with Matt Roark and the big win vs Tennessee this past season. Why even worry about what other schools are doing? Who cares if they made a display of the game, it should be taken as a compliment.

Say what you want about Rupp but let’s not forget Knight assaulting a police officer, mock whipping a black Calbert Cheaney like he was a pre-civil war slave at an open NCAA practice, telling Connie Chung that women “enjoy” rape, headbutting a player, throwing a chair, choking a player, and all of the other insane rants with the media. It will be interesting to see how both Indiana and Louisville handle having the bulls eye on their backs next year much like UK had this year. My guess is not as well as the Cats did this year because unlike the Cats, they are not in that position very frequently. I don’t think either team will hold it together to reach the NC game. UK will have the pressure off during the season and should be tournament ready by the end. I don’t predict another final 4 for UK next year but we should be pretty darn good. Bring on the monsters.

#88 UK fans have been celebrating over a month now. It is over and time to move on to next year. We got our trophy, our shirts, our programs, our commemorative basketballs, player autographs, the trip to see the Prez, the derby parade, and the draft where we will wish the NBA Cats well. There really isn’t much to talk about now except silly stuff. The summer is all about making fun of rival fans and programs. The loss at IU had no impact on the team or fans except to realize that Assembly Hall is a potentially dangerous place for a UK basketball player or fan to be in…and not because of a loss but concern for bodily harm. Actually, most UK fans are glad Indiana is good again. It made that tournament win sweet. We miss the Bobby Knight chair throwing, player choking days. It is no fun to beat IU when they are bad. As far as the future of college basketball, bring it on. The future for UK looks as bright as any BB program. A one point loss on a lucky shot on the road when the Cats were still kittens is no tail between their legs moment. See you next year in Rupp when all the pressure is on IU.

Honestly, there were few things more embarrassing about this past basketball season than IU rushing the court. It was lame and pathetic. But, their run this year was just as spectacular of a program-turnaround season as our first year with Cal. This is lame, but still.

That just goes to show we are everyone’s Super Bowl. People should celebrate taking down the Goliath of college basketball. It’s great when teams can brag about how good they were and say we even beat Kentucky once in the 2011-2012 season. This shows everyone recognizes Kentucky as the king of CBB.

IU should be better than this. At the same time its flattering to UK fans that it would mean that much to them to celebrate a sweet sixteen appearance as being so historically epic because of it. I hope we get one of our Magical 1999-2000 season in Rupp soon.

UK fans are making a big mistake in critcizing the elaborate celebrations IU is making. They indeed should build a shrine to the 2011-2012 hoosiers because this is the best they are ever likely to be.

Tim in 1990, Coach Rupp had been dead for some 13 years. That’s the way a writer should conduct himself by writting a book so the man he’s writting about can’t defend himself.
I could smear all the mud I could on let’s say John Wooden, and he couldn’t defend hisself from it for the fact he isn’t here to defend. Even your hero dropped the N word a LOT when one of his team wasn’t practicing they way he wanted him to. He called them playing “N” ball How do I know? Every year back in the 80s, GM they would hire some members of the basketball team. Mike LaFav, Tony Brown, Rick Rowray just to name a few for summer jobs at Allison’s Transmission plant in Indy. Talking to those guys I was even wondering how Knight was able to keep his job with the abuse he gave those kids. Just remember those who live in glass houses shouldn’t be throwing stones at those who have bigger stones. And at this moment in Time we (UK) have the biggest stones to throw.

Hey, remember that the Hoosiers lost approximately 65 games over the three previous seasons, had been on probation for admitting to hiring a cheater and letting him go on cheating, and had only beaten UK 4 or 5 times in the last 20 years or so. A lot of their fans have probably never seen IU win two games in a single NCAA Tournament.

I’m convinced that many posters on here, and writers, didn’t watch UK basketball before the Calipari era. I’m all for making fun of IU, they acted like complete morons this year. But to make fun of them for celebrating a team whose situation and accomplishments are so similar to the Unforgettables without even mentioning the 92 UK team shows a lack of knowledge of UK history.

And lets not forget old slapping Bobby. No wonder you guys went nuts when you beat the Cats,,,,,after all those years of frustration I don’t blame you. Little tip for you,,,,,you can hire Sampson back. I saw him near Rupp with a sign in his hand that said ” will work for cell phone minutes”

Let’s put the court rushing into perspective. If you were at the game you would realize that it was the students that rushed the court and deservedly so. These students experienced the worst 3 years in the history of Indiana basketball. Seniors had enjoyed a record of 28-46. As a long time fan, I or no one around me rushed the court, but I have no problem with those who did. Now, if they rush the court in the future than they deserve to be criticized.
