One of the positions of concern for the first offensive strike of “Operation: Win” is Mike Summers’ offensive line. There are a number of players competing for positions with the loss of Christian Johnson, Justin Jeffries, Jorge Gonzalez and Zipp Duncan and, according to Joker Phillips, one has started to emerge. On his call-in show last night, Phillips said that junior Chandler Burden would start at left tackle if the season started today. To this point in his career, Burden’s most notable accomplishment was making five tackles against Alabama last season and, after only moving to the offensive side of the ball this spring, being this far ahead of the group is either a sign of great progress or cause for great concern. Either way, the 6’4″, 296-pounder looks to be the one tabbed with protecting the blind side of the starting quarterback that still has not yet been determined. Joker said that decision might not come until well after the spring when the coaches sit down and review.
Also, Joker spoke of the need for defensive leaders after practice:
One of those potential leaders, Winston Guy, also chatted it up.
