Kentucky Sports Radio

University of Kentucky Basketball, Football, and Recruiting news brought to you in the most ridiculous manner possible.

Are you rooting for Louisville to win the title?

A golden oldie.
louisville-uk-fan

On this morning’s radio show, Matt and the guys debated the merit of UK fans cheering for Louisville to win the title. Predictably, Matt was vehement that no, Cats fans should not cheer for Louisville to win because they are our rival. However, some callers and readers disagreed, saying that a Louisville win would be “good for the state” and therefore, the rivalry. We want to hear what you think. Let’s get all scientific with a poll:

I trust you’ll leave your reasons in the comments section.

I can literally think of zero reasons why you would. I would rather see duke three peat than see Louisville win a single title

Not going to be rooting for them, necessarily, but won’t be rooting against them either. If they win, good for them, and if they lose, oh well. Now I absolutely WILL be rooting against IU, Kansas, and Duke. Don’t want KU or Duke to get any closer to our title count, and don’t want IU to win because their coach is a douchebag who teaches his players to flop and fake flagrant fouls. And he is creepy in a John Wayne Gacy kind of way.

You are retarded by thinking that it would be better for Dook, or for that matter, UNC to win titles rather than Louisville. Dook and UNC are our biggest competion and hate us with an Indiana fervor. Only root for them if they play IU for a title and in that case I would hope they could both lose. However, living in Indiana will be miserable this year if the Loosiers win a National Title. If I lived in Kentucky I would say the opposite.

I remember going in the Speedway near campus in 1980 when U of L won and there were two stupid girls with Louisville shirts on that expected Woodland an Euclid to be rocking like after UK won 1n 1978. If they are playing IU in the final I’m rooting for a 47 OT game where both teams players start cramping up and the NCAA steps in and calls the game in the name of player safety and they decide to not award a trophy to anyone this year. (My third favorite team is whoever is playing Indiana)

Answer is no. But I confess I was pleasantly shocked last year when I went to the Final Four. Met several UofL fans both inside the Superdome and on Bourbon St. The large majority were gracious and there were several UofL fans that attended the Championship game and were rooting for us. Who knows, maybe it was the alcohol and they reverted to being jerks once they got back to Jefferson Co. But I don’t hate them like I did before.

I probably would have, honestly. I am usually pulling for any Ky team left in the tournament (some of my friends don’t understand that), but with all the UL trolls we’ve had on KSR in the past few weeks being complete azzholes, i won’t now. Now, i’m hoping 12 seed Oregon pulls the rug out from under them. I hope they don’t even make the final four. If they do, i hope they get beat on a buzzer beater, so it hurts worse. Screw ’em.

I would rather UL win than KU, IU, or Duke. I’m not necessarily cheering for UL but I’d rather them win than the aforementioned. I even dislike AZ more than UL. Preferably Miami wins it because I like their squad and I’m a huge Larkin fan. I hope Izzo’s squad kills Duke and I don’t want OH St to win it either. That kind of narrows my choices to Miami, Mich St, and UL really. I also, am one of the people that still appreciates Pitino for the resurrection of the CATS. Just my opinion.

I now live in Atlanta, and I grew up in the far Western part of the state. I have very few close friends that are Louisville fans. I have several Indiana fans as friends, and I have grown to despise them. They are like a more educated but more annoying and illogical version of UL fans. IU is public enemy number one for me.

I still have some love for Pitino. I wouldn’t mind seeing him cementing his legacy as a hall of famer. He is a great coach, and he did a lot for our program. I know his faults, but I enjoy watching the teams he coaches. They play hard, and it is fun to watch. I would prefer Miami or Michigan or any of the smaller schools to win it, but I won’t be too upset if UL wins it. It would be different if I had more UL fans as friends, or if Kentucky wasn’t in such good shape for the future. We don’t have anything to envy right now at Kentucky. If Louisville wins it, it won’t be the end of the world.

Here is how I would rank who I want to win it:
    The group I prefer:
    1) FGCU
    2) Wichita State
    3) Lasalle
    4) Oregon
    5) Miami
    6) Michigan

The group I wouldn’t mind winning
    7) Arizona
    8) Marquette
    9) Michigan State
    10) Louisville
    11) Florida

The group I do not want to win under any circumstances.
    12) Ohio State
    13) Syracuse
    14) Duke
    15) Kansas
    16) Indiana

It just isn’t that bad for Kentucky if Louisville wins this year. It is more of a swan song for Pitino. They will not be able to do in the ACC what they have done in the Big East.

I said yes for two reasons. First of all I see UL as the lesser of 4 evils being UL, IU, Duke, & Kansas. Sure there are other schools out there that could win it, but at this point UL is the clear favorite and I’m surprisingly fine with that. The second reason and more important in my opinion is for rivalry. Yes I love calling Louisville little brother and I love knowing we have a very large step up on them in virtually all things basketball, but their success only increases the rivalry and brings more light to it outside of the state of KY. Ask anyone outside of Kentucky what the greatest Rivalry in College Basketball is and 90% will tell you UNC-Duke, and the reason for that is both programs have a winning tradition that includes multiple National Titles. I would love for UK V UL to take over that spotlight and I think the only way for that to happen is for UL to Win. Painful in someways but a necessary evil for a greater good.

From a rational stand point Louisville winning the title is essentially meaningless. They do not threaten us in terms of championships, final fours, wins or ncaa tournament appearances. A team like Duke/Indiana/Kansas winning would certainly challenge (but not overtake) some of these claims. That being said…

Louisville fans holding a title over our heads would be devastating. They are annoying, have a little brother complex and generally whine and complain about everything. When else have you seen a rival fanbase point to the fact their team is more “profitable” than another team? In addition, UofL fans represent everything the rest of the state isn’t. They are the antithesis of Kentucky and even refuse to acknowledge they are much like the rest of us. Counting these factors in combination with the rational ones proposed above, Louisville winning the title just isn’t something that is worth dealing with. Even if their championship will be the filler to two of the greatest NCAA championship teams to ever take the court.

What is even more hilarious is this is the biggest down year for the NBA draft and college basketball for over a decade and they are still not a clear cut team to win it all in a sub talent year!

Also they might want to check the VELCRO on that sugar bowl/ toilet bowl victory, I hear that it is going to be put on a permanent time out!!!!!!!!

The ony reason I voted undecided is that I picked Louisville to win it all in my bracket at work. So, it costs me money potentially if they lose. That being said, if they lost, it would not hurt my feelings in the least bit. so win, win situation for me!

First of all, my answer is biased, since I am a student at University of Louisville. For starters, I am and have always been a Cats fan, since my first memory: watching the 1998 tourney. However, UK’s tradition is immensely richer than Louisville’s, so even if they win it this year, it’s still no threat to UK. I always grew up thinking Louisville IS Kentucky’s rival, but also, another school in the state of Kentucky, and overall, a lesser basketball power overall than Kentucky (this year is a rare exception). If Kentucky isn’t even in the tourney, and Louisville is the only school in the state of Kentucky remaining, and they win it all, that’s good. I’d rather them win it than Indiana or Duke. Or Kansas, and I like Kansas!! It’s just that I’d like a no-name win it if anyone, and Louisville is overall a decent school, but not really a blue-blood. Maybe Louisville can make another Final 4 run again. Florida Gulf Coast all the way, anyone? 😀

I hope they win it. Louisville’s success only elevates the profile of Kentucky basketball (ala Duke/UNC). I walk in with my UK jacket on to the counter. The girl starts taking my order and out of the back walks the manager and he says “excuse me sir can you tell me when UK plays again?” Then starts laughing loudly and hysterically so I can’t say a comeback. There’s several customers in the store by the way and this is the manager doing this. When he finally calms down enough for me to speak and actually be heard I said “can you tell me the last time U of L won a Championship?” If you’re a UK fan in Louisville, and there are a lot of us, there is absolutely no way you can pull for U of L ever.

This is the dumbest question I’ve ever had to answer. I live in Louisville and there would be absolutely nothing good about UofLoosiers winning the title. There fans down here are already idiots thinking there on the same level as UK. So with that being said I hope they fall flat on their face and get their butts kicked. Now that would be awesome!!!

I always root for Louisville when not playing our CATS. Pitino is the best floor coach in the college game, winning with less talent and his teams are fun to watch. I hold no resentment for Pitino following his dream and leaving for Boston. Go Cards, win it all and keep the Banner in Ky.
We have the best recruiter in the game with Cal and we will get our chance at another banner next year.

Pros: Good for Rick Pitino, hall of fame coach. Good for the State of Kentucky. Cons: University of Louisville and the most annoying fans on the planet. Don’t know too many UL fans that would root UK on. I’m on the bubble. I did pick them in my pot and the trash talking will take care of itself next year.

I was at UK when Riley was playing and Rupp was coaching. Rupp wouldn’t play UL and maybe that was wise. There was no rivalry (or hate) like there is now. We always supported both UL and WKU in those days. If UK wasn’t in the hunt for a championship, we would pull for the other teams in the state. I understand what exists today with rivalries amd Rick coming to UL, but I don’t like all the hate. Pitino gave us some of our best years. This team reminds me of some of our teams in the 90’s when he always had them peaking at the right time. I would rather see them win than any of the others……except for maybe Florida Gulf Coast!

My posts from time to time get deleted but it is not only USmell I hate, I hate the city, the people that act like anyone outside that rat palace is nothing but hicks with no teeth. Why would any Cats fan want to hear loserville fans mock and carry on about how they won for an entire year? I’d rather have a million knives penetrate my skull than to hear that. Would their fans cheer for us? ABSOLUTELY NOT. So, I feel as a much much greater fan base we have the obligation to out-do them in this sense.

As a diehard UK fan I always cheer for Kentucky, and whomever is playing Louisville. I recently moved to the carolinas where down here half the population think UNC is the greatest program ever because MJ went there. You the have your duke fans who are….. duke fans. I voted that I want louisville to win the title for a few reasons.
    1) if IU or UNC won they would only be 2 titles away from BBN.
    2) if louisville cuts the nets they would have three, which would also catapult further arguments in favore of uk vs UofL being the greatest rivalry in college basketball
    3) let’s keep it in the state, louisville with 3 would mean UK and UofL have the combined titles that three of NC most prestiged mens college basketball programs.
    4) Living in the carolinas has given me a deeper hate for any college ball that isnt in the commonwealth because quite frankly, No where else in the country is there a following and love for the game quite like the people from kentucky.
    5) Finally, duke sucks, tom creen is super creepy, and i think a title for louisville would be huge for louisville fans because they will have something to brag about when they get waxed in rupp next season.
