Are You Forgetting Someone Herald Leader?

Sometimes you see something and you can only respond with bewilderment. Such is the case over on the Herald-Leader’s website where they are currently polling readers on who is the best active NCAA Men’s Basketball coach. Let’s take a look at our options here:

hl poll

Let’s see you have all the traditional names, seems like a pretty good list at first glance. I just feel like something is missing. Something like a guy who has taken three different schools to final fours. A guy with as many championships as Izzo and Boeheim. A guy who has taken over recruiting and just assembled the greatest class in the history of college basketball. Oh and it just so happens to be the guy who Coaches in the city your newspaper is published.  All that just begs the question, how does John Calipari not get included on this list?

As of writing the choice of “Someone else” currently holds the top spot. Which I’m assuming is all made of votes for Cal. The third question in the poll is are you male or female so it could all be just made to mine some information about demographics but still how does the Coach that helps line your pockets with newspaper sales not make this list.

You just have to shake your head sometimes. Update: Oscar Combs pointed out the poll on which earned a response from the editor of the H/L:

Pretty funny the poll ended up on the Lexington newspaper. Whoever originally envisioned that poll still should have included Cal simply for what he has accomplished in just four years at UK.

I would say “amazing”, but for the fact I’ve not been amazed by anything the local birdcage liner manufacturer has contributed for decades.

No they haven’t taken it down. So first they post a jacked up poll, leaving off the one of the last two national champion coaches. They they lie about taking it down. H-Losers.

Thanks Andrew for the post, I think it’s hilarious how Kentucky can be shunned in it seems like every manner possible. In my opinion Calipari is one of the greatest to ever do it because he pushes himself to do things that haven’t been accomplished before. Now that he’s at Kentucky he’ll def have to win about a hundred more rings to get the respect that he already deserves. This stuff will just make next year all the more enjoyable. They’ve lost any business I would have ever given them national poll or not and my families as well!

    4) Well when you go to the final four with 3 different teams and one of the is UMASS then I think you do deserve to be on it. When your teams have went to the Elite Eight ,Final Four and then win a championship in the last four years then yes he deserves to be on the list. One of the jobs of a head coach is to recruit. So when you are the best recruiter in the history of the game, then yes you belong on the list.

@ #4, didn’t those nasty Cards lose two years in a row in the first round of the NCAA??? HUH? Might as well not even played! That was LAUGHABLE!!! @12,13 & 15 wearing those chicken buckets on your head in the Yummy Center has smoothered your brain cells. You’re all idiots! @ #18, whether or not two of Cal’s accomplishments were vacated, STILL doesn’t vacate the fact that they went there! UNC should have some vacated, but that won’t happen. If they did, Ol’ Roy wouldn’t be on that list, huh?! How long did it take UofL to win #3? UK won #3 in 1951! SHUT UP!

That’s a bullshit answer from the H-L guy. Every other day that poll asks about turning downtown Lexington streets two-way. Doubt that’s of “national” importance.

@ 11: Bob Huggins? Oh that’s supposed to be a 2010 Elite Eight joke, right? Ummm… kinda of ironic UofL got beat by CALifornia in the 1st round. See also: Morehead State 2011.

    @ 13: See above.

@16: You don’t even have the most titles in your own state.

cal is a great GREAT recruiter of elite talent. What he is not…is one of the top ten basketball minds in the NCAA. He has a good record of developing point guards (most are already elite) and obviously uses the dribble drive offensive system so he has to be able to teach a little but when you compare his coaching chops to what some of the other coaches produce he found to be lacking. Sheesh, Scottie Davenport at Bellarmine is a “better” coaching mind than Cal. Remember when (i think it was CL Brown) tweeted at Bobby Morris that in a timeout huddle Cal was befuddled and had no play to draw up on his dry erase board?? He is a good coach though, otherwise Kentucky wouldnt have pursued him, just not elite

A coach with two vacated Final Fours will never be considered amongst the best NCAA coaches. Cal will have to win at least two more National Championships, and then 15 years will have to pass to make sure something unpleasant doesn’t become public, and then he might be included in such a poll.

Cal is an excellent recruiter but an absolutely pitiful communicator and bench coach. He is one big time choke artist that is covered up by better talent. In other words…he sucks when compared to coaches like Rick…like it or not BBN

    19. he did take a number 1 recruiting class and went to the NIT…and lost. Even when RickyP went the NIT he didnt have any 5 stars or McD all americans and actually won a game or two. So perhaps it is you that is pathetic

Cal is a mediocre bench coach. He tells his ready made NBA players to “make a play” during timeouts. If he cioached the uofl talent over the last two years (both of which played top 5ish schedules), no way he does what Rick did with that talent. He had 5 former burger boys in this year’s team, plus Stein. You saw how that worked out. If they are not ready made, he has no answer. It is just the way it is. Cal loses around 12 games with this uofl team. You guys should kiss Uncle Wes on his beanbag everyday for bringing in the talent.

Ever heard of Carmelo Travieso, Edgar Padilla, or Tyrone Weeks?

They were the captains on a Calipari coached UMass team that beat Rick Pitino’s 1996 super team and went to the Final Four with a 35-2 record.

Calipari would take UMass to the Sweet Sixteen (1992), two Elite Eights (1995-96), and frequent #1 rankings in the AP weekly poll. How many times has Louisville been ranked #1 in the AP poll in history? Wait, what? Firts time was THIS YEAR??? Cal did it numerous times…. at UMass.

20 – Just read what they wrote. If you’re not completely retarded, you’ll see why my initial comment made so much sense.

You turdinal fans are a hoot. Now that slick has branded himself a loser with that tatto, you probably think he’s the greatest. What a crock! You keep saying Calipari cannot coach, really? A team does not gel and suddenly he cannot coach? At least Calipari is teaching them how to further their careers as opposed to slick rick who only teaches continual fouling. That’s a style Kentucky fans remember, he used it at UK when the really good players were going to other schools; before he won his first championship. Slick is still teaching the same old crap and Calipari has adapted, improved and moved on. When the smoke clears and you loserville’s fans finally understand everything slick does is for his benefit and not the schools, then maybe you’ll understand. Here’s a point to ponder; what has slick done for Louisville outside of the university? In fact, let’s broaden the scope to anywhere outside the university.

    30. Maybe nothing but probably more than most because he is a millionare. for instance, when he got his tattoo he wrote a check to an autism charity because the artist refused payment. And what does that have to do with his on court coaching? Nothing, you just can’t get over yourself
