Archie is Staying Away from the 3-Point Line

I don’t mind it if he’s making plays like this.

I don’t mind it if he’s making plays like this.

When UK wins by 10 at home and they make six 3-pointers, there shouldn’t be much room for criticism correct? OK I’m not going to criticize Archie, but it has to be said, Why has Archie Goodwin only hit one 3-pointer in SEC play? Caught you off guard didn’t it? I had no idea that this was even a thing until I became curious the other day; most of my attention was focused on Archie’s passing rather than his shooting.

Archie came to UK heralded as a great scorer, but he obviously has had some early struggles playing in the limelight. However Archie is taking baby steps towards consistently scoring. He used to run at the rim and throw up some junk, hoping the ref would bail him out with a foul. When the whistle was actually blown, the result was often a missed foul shot. Archie now is beginning to hit his free throws (12-14 at Ole Miss) and is attacking the basket with some control, which in turn has helped him become a better passer.

What concerns me most with Archie’s 3 point stats, is that he doesn’t even take them anymore. Most games (including yesterdays), he tries a 3, then never goes back. You can look at this two ways: 1. At least he isn’t missing a ton of shots. 2. If he isn’t taking them, his confidence in his outside shot is obviously very low. Whether you like it or not, Archie Goodwin needs to put points on the board in order for Kentucky to succeed. If he doesn’t believe that his shots will go in now, then he will not believe in himself, or be able to hit the big shots in crunch time (see Russ Smith).

Uncle Julius and Kyle Wiltjer have been successful from trey-land thus far, mitigating Archie’s absence from downtown. Technically the Cats don’t NEED Archie to play big from long-range, but they cannot have a SHOOTING Guard that is afraid to shoot an open shot.

Do some of you think before you write this stuff? Archie is not now nor has he ever been a great three point shooter. He was not recruited as one. As much as it would be nice for him to be better at it the last thing we need is him forcing threes *and* forcing drives to the basket. Archie needs to watch a continuous loop of the best of Doron Lamb’s runners in the lane.

Shooting guard does not imply that you are an efficient 3-point shooter or an efficient shooter period. You can have a busted shot and be labeled a SG. The reality is Archie is a SCORING guard. This team just needs him to get buckets as efficiently as possible and not crash into every big guy, flail his arms, and throw the ball off the shot clock.

I don’t care what position he plays, he has no business shooting threes…at least not until he actually develops a 3 pt shot. We have people to shoot 3s (Kyle, Uncle J, Harrow, Polson, even Alex). I hate it when he shoots 3s because you know it’s not even gonna be close. He has plenty other things to work on to become the best version of Archie besides 3s. Sorry, but couldn’t disagree with this post more.

Archie was a prolific scorer, not 3 point shooter out of high school. He did shoot a decent % though.

What he does need is something of an outside/mid range game to compliment the occasional 3 and the drive game. Right now when he has the ball the D knows where he’s going and packs in. This why he has been made to pull j, try the runner or floater in practice or has been penalized with extra conditioning. Last night he didn’t play 5-15 feet out so he sat. Ole Miss he did and he had good game.

Simple. But he is stubborn as most prolific scores are (see also Russ Smith).

Oh my gosh. Some of these “kids” come here to get their ticket punched to the NBA. Nothing more. Archie is definitely in that category. Bust is what he is, whether 20 likes it or not. He doesn’t have the game for this level of basketball, much less the NBA.

  25. Cal

Some UK fans are too much. He’s 18. He averages 10 shots a game on 43% shooting and leads the team in scoring. And because he hit a rough patch people demonize him? This why some people hate us. The kid goes to class, doesn’t get in any trouble off the court, but he has become the Arch Villain of the season. Some of you are pathetic. He’s freshman! Not everyone is MKG or Davis. If recruits don’t come here its because of the crazy comments people leave on this site.

Archie will have a rule named after him this year “Offensive Flop” the NBA has the defensive flop and when Archie goes too the NBA they will start fining him for flopping on drives to the basket. That will be another BBN effect. I’m hoping his riding the pine yesterday will wake him up, but I’m afraid he will try to come out Tuesday and make up for only scoring 3pts yesterday, hope it doesn’t cost us the game.

Fans are too tough on Archie, he is what he is, either Cal did not evaluate him right when recruiting him or Cal thought Archie would be able to improve. The best thing Cal can do for Archie is to not star him and give him valuable time on the bench so he can see and lern. Maybe he will play better coming off the bench and limited minutes.

Like I said in a post yesterday, Goodwin cannot shoot the three, he cannot shoot the mid range jumper and he cannot shoot a floater. The only thing that he can shoot is layups.Layups are only easy when they are open layups not when they come against three defenders. The best way for him to be effective is to drive the ball, draw the defenders to help, like he has been doing, and then pass to an open team mate, which he hasn’t been doing. I really don’t think he is selfish I just think he has zero basketball I.Q. If he were selfish,he would be putting up more shots than he has been.(See Russ Smith)

I have been lucky enough to get lower arena tickets for six games this year in Rupp. I go when the gates open and sit 5 rows from the court in order to watch warmups. If Archie concentrates on his shots I would be amazed. He misses about 60% of what he tries with no one guarding him.
Regardless of free throws. mid-level jumpers, or 3 point shots he has trouble and the majority of his shots are short with no arch. How you shoot in practice is usually how you will shoot in games.

Nick, I think you are making a mountain out of a moe hill on this one. Cal seems to have gotten this kid to play more under control. That’s a benefit. Yes, traditional thought is that you need a two guard who can score and hit the three. But if you haven’t noticed, the game of basketball is becoming less and less traditional. We have enough shooters to have at least one three point shooting threat on the floor at any given time, and, most often, we have at least two (if you expand the term threat to include Harrow with Wiltjer and Mays). Goodwin is a slasher and a decent perimeter defender who, as the team becomes more defined in their collective strengths and individual roles, will prove to be invaluable. It’s best to appreciate the strengths of players instead of focusing on what they are not.

59 – “PayPal Cal and his team of 5 NBA players lost once to Tommy Crean and almost did again in the tournament.”

Surely you can’t be serious. Indiana led for all of 2 minutes late in the 2nd half, and UK walked away from IU in the second half to win by 12. Since when is that “almost losing”? Face it, it took a 25 foot last second prayer by Watford in a meaningless December game, or IU would be 0-for-who-knows against UK in recent memory. Crean is a mediocre coach – the only real accomplishment he has to his credit is a FF in 2003, while riding the coattails of D. Wade. He hasn’t done diddly squat since, and won’t this year either. Face it – your Hoosiers can’t beat a quality team on the road.
