Archie Goodwin Doing it Right

A former Cat is improving by the day in the NBA Summer League and it has been fun to watch. At the moment of this writing, Archie Goodwin has 19 points midway through the third quarter in a Summer League game versus the Raptors and is showcasing a ton of moves. Goodwin is 5-5 from the field, getting to the rim (and finishing), while also hitting a number of threes. He has been playing like this for a number of games in a row, and at this point he has become one of the positive stories of the Summer League.

Yes I know it is Summer League. But Archie is also only 18 years old. His best days are ahead of him and the NBA game (where people can’t collapse on him as much in college) may suit him quite well in Phoenix.

Great story… I wish he would have been on the 2010-2011 roster beside Brandon Knight.

Goodwin had way too much on his shoulders without a PG and wings to spread the floor.

With Knight’s inside outside game Millers deep ball and Jones & Harrellson deep guys you could drive and dish to having 2 slashes like Knight & Goodwin would have really been fun to watch.

PHX was the perfect landing spot for Archie. They just traded Jared Dudley. He is going to get to play and make mistakes at the NBA level. He will be next to good enough veterans to not get completely lost. If the Suns hit in the next draft and land a free agent, they will be back amongst the living in the NBA, and Archie will have a chance to be a part of it.

Everything about the pro game is different than college. Archie will only get better and is still physically maturing. He’s also a hard worker. I have no doubt he will be a very solid pro for years to come. Could he of used some more time in college? Of course he could have. Every NBA draft is filed with 100 prospects who could have used another year, or three.

Good for Archie! He for sure has the go get it done mentality that is needed to prosper at anything in life. I hated watching him at UK, but a lot of that was probably not his fault, just a lack of options, which was Cal’s fault. Wish Archie nothing but success and will be watching his games in the NBA.

Archie will be a better pro the NCAA player. The game is different and more geared around getting to the goal something Archie can do well!

After reading the “fans” trash him all season nothing makes me happier than to see him doing well. His game is tailor made for the NBA and if he gets a consistent jump shot he will shine. Make-em eat they feet Archie.

I rolled the ball out there during practice. Not sure what #17 wants from me. I told him to just go out there and make some plays.

NBA = refs that don’t suck as bad.

I think college refs take the bait
    of negative press/comments and hamper
our dribble drives… all the while
we’re getting hacked all the way down the lane.

Reminds me of Joe B’s teams always getting
the negative press about being bruisers- more
    than others.

I’ve been watching the summer league games n I’ve realized that Archie thought college ball was a cakewalk n he would just go through the motions and be a lottery pick. It didn’t work out that way for him though. Now he is becoming the player that Coach Cal recruited. He layed down this year. I’m glad he’s doing good but don’t like his effort or decisions while he was a Cat.

Thanks#22 for echoing my thoughts. I thought Archie got a bum rap Winston Bennett style all season.

Great news for Archie, hope he keeps that outside shot working. Ask Tony Allen and Tayshaun how much the Spurs couldn’t “collapse” on them in the Western Conference Finals. Collapsing into the lane is a fundamental aspect of every current NBA team’s defensive scheme.

When Archie left, all I heard was he didn’t listen. Couldn’t be coached. Archie, was trying to do way too much and his 3 point shooting needed work. His style fits the pro’s just like Rondo didn’t fit the college mold very well but now look at him. I do not agree with “he has not been coached for over a year.” Cal is a good coach. They didn’t have a real point guard. A leader. Archie was trying to make up for that. When Harrow had a good game, the team had a good game. Nothing else to say about it. Archie worked hard and is still working hard and now it is showing now. Glad to see him doing well.
