Anthony Bennett talks to Five-Star Basketball

Anthony Bennett likes the chance to start right away at Kentucky. In an interview with Five-Star Basketball, Scout.com’s No. 2 power forward in 2012 said he likes the Cats because “they said they’re trying to lose like seven players next year.”

Trying to lose seven players next year? Interesting.

Watch here.

That’s a fairly common figure of speech, I’ve noticed. Trying almost loses its meaning, in some cases, like it’s a substitute for saying something is almost certainly going to happen. I am EXTREMELY square.

4 – Which two? Miller, Vargas and Davis are obviously gone; MKG almost certainly; Lamb wants to go more than anyone I’ve ever seen (and probably can go after this year) and Jones will most likely jump if he’s in the lottery because there’s no threat of a lockout this time around. That leaves Teague, and if history tells us anything it’s that Calipari PGs can break out like THAT, so who knows what will happen with him.

Trying to lose as in if we win #8, I’m hoping that the 5 underclassmen has an opportunity to make millions of dollars next year. The only way we lose seven players is if everyone gets much better, Jones, Lamb and Teague mostly and that is what Coach Cal is trying to do. Nuff said.

Of course Cal wants to move 7 players!!!! Think for a sec people. If we have 5…!5!….underclassmen ready to go in the first rnd of the draft that means we had an awesome year!

Those of you who think there is necessary, inherant, conflict between getting guys drafted in the fst rnd and winning…misunderstand college athletics. Sadly, many of those same confused souls also are prob complaining that Willis is not good enough….when in fact he is the perfect get for providing some longer term stability while we cont. to try an bet loads of kids drafted

Teague isn’t even close to being NBA ready. I question the regression of Jones as well. I don’t mean to be critical, but I am simply not feeling it.

One thing is certain. If we don’t get Shabazz and Bennett, we’re screwed next season, because we’re losing these Cats for sure:

    -Jones
    -Lamb
    -Davis
    -Miller
    -Vargas

That leaves us with one experienced big man: Kyle Wiltjer! We’ll also have Jon’s Hood and Ryan Harrow and Marquis Teague one would think. But then again, Bledsoe went pro after one year so you just never know. But if we get Shabazz and Bennett to join Cauley, Poythress, Goodwin, Harrow, Teague and Hood, then I think we’ll be OK. We will be young and will probably lose 10 or more games but we will be tough come March of 2013.

#16 – uhh, couldn’t you describe this entire site in the exact same way??? It is a “blog” after all.

Teague needs to “get it” before tournament time or he may be best suited to stay another year. I’d welcome him back!

If Jones and Lamb don’t start playing up to potential they may find themselves in similar situations – needing another year to improve their draft stock. They may go anyway but, neither looks like a lottery at this point (Jones probably is though just on “upside”).

Miller and Vargas are gone, obviously; MKG and Davis as well. My personal opinion is, if we win it all, they are all gone. If we don’t, at least one sticks around – my guess for this person would be Teague (based on current performance) with Lamb as a darkhorse.

    Vargas
    Miller
    Davis
    MKG
    Lamb
    Jones
    Teague

It would be a surprise if any came back, so UK doesn’t have to “try” to lose 7, it’s very likely. Teague is a 1st round draft pick right now, though he has slipped a few spots and has probably slipped out of the lottery. If Teague comes back, it will not be because he has too and those who think Teague is a lock to come back are deluding themselves. #17 which of Cal’s UK recruits that went pro early should’ve stayed? The question answers itself…none.

Have you all even looked at next years draft predictions? Davis is suppose to go 1st or 2nd. Gilchrist at 7th. Jones 12. lamb 17th. and teague 21st. All first round. Miller and Vargas. Thats 7. Go to nbadraft.com

  23. catfan65

If UK gets Bennett and Muhammad, they will not lose 10 games, they will be among the title favorites again, no matter who comes back. Syracuse is probably the only top-ranked team that will likely be better next year and they are going to lose Joseph and Jardine, arguably their most important players.

  24. JMFATZ47

    17) Seriously?

And who do you believe? A 17yr old kid who makes a quote or Cal?

2010 was an anomaly……rarely will anyone turnover 4 freshman to a draft. Just last yr we ONLY lost Knight and Liggins early and Liggins was due to circumstances. Cal is HONEST with his players…..of course he was upfront with Cousins by telling him he needs to go ahead and take his top 5 draft status to the bank. Wall was the number one pick (no brainer) and Bledsoe and Orton were surprises.

You either sign the best or play against the best.

#21 UK is among finalists for Muhammad, Bennett, Pollard and Tony Parker. I think we sit in the lead w Bennett abnd Muhammad based on their what they have said. Not that either is a lock. But the fact that we basically let Amile Jefferson go indicates that Cal thinks he has a good shot of getting both. According to Rivals, Duke may not get a single 5 star recruit (scout and espn have Sulaimon ranked higher) next year and we are complaining that we may only have 6 on our roster next year (Harrow, Goodwin, Poythress, Muhammad, Bennett, and Wiltjer) plus a nice 4 star C in Cauley and the possibility of getting the 4 star C Parker. Oh what havoc has Cal wrought!

Eric Bledsoe was the 18th pick. Is Teague really so inferior to Bledsoe as a prospect that people think he’d fall out of the first round? In addition, this is a really week draft for PGs. You are probably looking at Lillard, Wroten, Kabongo, and Marshall as potential first round PGs. All of them are have very different strengths and weaknesses. There were 7 PGs picked in the first round last year.

If Teague comes back it will because he thinks he can dramatically improve his stock. I don’t think that’s likely, given the presence of Harrow.

  33. catfan65
    9:35 pm January 23, 2012 Permalink

Muhammad has all but said that he’s not going to UCLA, he dropped USC which leaves UNLV. When he tweets and talks about a team chances are it is UK, he never really mentions UNLV except in passing. He still has a visit to Duke for UNC game, so I think he will go to UK or Duke. But why would he want to play at Duke where Coach K specializes in dropping the NBA stock of almost everyone he recruits. If we get Shabazz and Bennett (or Pollard if not Bennett) UK would have Harrow, Goodwin, Shabazz, Wiltjer, Bennett, Poythress, Cauley, Hood, Beckham and scrubs. Might also get Parker, but not sure he would come if he has that many 5 stars ahead of him. Guard depth is the problem, but the team will be crazy tall and athletic. We’ll see how it works out and 2013 is shaping up to be awesome recruiting class also so we want some room to add top players.

Bledsoe was a much lower rated recruit than Teague (Rivals had Bledsoe #23, Teague #5), so it was a surprise that Bledsoe went in the first round. There is almost no chance that Teague falls out of 1st round of NBA draft.

    36) A lot of people seem to forget how much the NBA drafts on potential (someone freaking drafted Shagari Alleyne!). Even if Teague was having a mediocre year (which he isn’t, despite what high expectations-holding fans will say), he’d still have a good shot of going mid to late first round on potential alone, especially with a brother playing in the league.

An 18 year old hears one thing and then “grapevines” the story. No story here.

Most likely what he was told, “We are looking to lose 7 players.”

This could easily be translated from “looking” to “trying” by Bennett. Yet, whomever told him that (Antigua?) was using the definition of “looking” as “it’s likely this will happen” instead of “this is what we want.”

  41. catfan65
    12:36 am January 24, 2012 Permalink

Its not just that Cal gets top recruits, it’s how well those recruits play. Look at the top-10 recruits last year according to Rivals:
#1 Austin Rivers – not ranked. No longer a sure first round draft pick. Rivers Off. Eff. is @1000 in D-1
#2 Anthony Davis – probable #1 draft pick
    #3 Michael Kidd-Gilchrist – Lottery pick #7 NBA draft pick per nbadraft.net
#4 Brad Beal G – Lottery pick #8 NBA draft pick per nbadraft.net
    #5 Marquis Teague G – #21 pick per nbadraft.net
#6 LeBryan Nash – not ranked
#7 Quincy Miller – not ranked on nbadraft.net, stock falling, but I think Miller would be drafted
#8 James McAdoo – not ranked
#9 Khem Birch – not ranked, transfered from PITT
#10 DeAndre Daniels – not ranked, comes off bench for UCONN

So of the top 10 from last year, only Davis, Gilchrest, and Beal still look like sure lottery picks and Teague is a sure 1st rounder. Rivers may leave, but his stock has fallen. Plus he is a total douchebag. UK had 3 top 10 recruits 2 will be lottery picks 1 will be 1st rd at least. Of the other 7 only two maybe 1st round picks and 4 definitely will not be drafted. That is what Cal calls the Kentucky Effect and that is why UK will get their pick of players each year.

i hope teague is gone…. he plays like his brother. selfish and out of control… probably stays another year if he cant pull a brandon knight. of course jones is gone. we all dont see him staying for 3 years. obviously miller and vargus are gone. lets say lamb stays since he is a offensive player like john jenkins (3rd year player).Davis and gilchrist is gone of course. wiltjer of course is staying. thats 5 players. i think calipri wants teague and lamb to go pro cause he wants the stupid record to be broken or tied for first round picks from one team. He needs to worry less about the NBA and concentrate on winning a national championship cause thats all we, the big blue nation care about.

Cal doesn’t want Lamb to go, he could really use him next year. But Lamb will be a lottery pick and he will go pro. Jenkins was not a highly rated player out of HS and is projected as a 2nd rd pick. There is no comparison between Lamb and Jenkins as far as NBA.

well we already lost poole, and vargas and miller graduate. so thats three. Davis, Gilchrist, and Jones will be lottery picks. and lamb seems to want to go but is waiting until he is a mid first round guy. Then Teague is getting better, just like brandon knight did. You never know but i think at least two of them stay but wouldn’t be shocked if they all go.
