Andrew Wiggins Opens up His Recruitment

In the first glimpse of not-so-positive news in the Andrew Wiggins recruitment, he told Evan Daniels yesterday that he is considering reclassifying and has asked other schools to begin recruiting him. Among the other schools he has invited into the process are Kansas, North Carolina and Ohio State, and Wiggins has decided to consider all of those schools going forward.

This isn’t positive news for UK, because up until this point, Wiggins was basically only looking at two schools, Kentucky and Florida State. By opening up the process, there are of course now more choices of potential opponents for UK in the selection. The 2013 reclassification looks more and more likely and could make Wiggins part of the UK super class…assuming of course he wants to be part of such a class. At this point, we do not know that one way or the other. I still like UK’s position and think the Cats certainly have a good chance. But the percentage likelihood of him ending up in Lexington certainly decreases as each new school becomes competition.

False. MKG said the same thing. Said other schools weren’t recruiting him because they thought he was a lock to UK, but that wasn’t true and others should recruit him. Cal’s just toying with people.

I have two different theories, either he wants/like attention, or he just wants to take as many visits as possible. Either way, I don’t care, he obviously can handle the attention and deserves his visits. If he ends up in Blue, that’s great. If we don’t get him, we’ll still have the best class and still go farther than whatever school he chooses. Go Cats

It’s entirely possible he still only really wants to go here or FSU and just wants some attention/hype. Doesn’t mean he can’t be wowed by a Kansas or UNC, but this doesn’t have to be frightening news.

He’ll get more attention at all-star games if he’s uncommitted, perhaps. Though being part of a super class will bring attention, too.

It is called a GAME, i.e., mind! It is readily apparent the kid is no idiot, he has played the press like a pro! Everytime he sneezes it is noted in a blog or article.

Give the kid a break and let him enjoy HIS time!

My belief is that this is all for marketing purposes. He wants as many people talking about him as possible so after one year his shoe contract is bigger than it would have been if there was no excitement surrounding him. He would rather have John Wall hype around him than being a boring, i know where he’s going so yawn lock to UK.

I think this is just a 17 year old wanting a little more attention, I mean, the kid obviously deserves it. And he probably wants to use all 5 of his official visits to travel a little bit. I still think he ends up in Blue, this is just a 17 year wanting to explore a little in my opinion. Cal has been high on his list for a reason, dont think for a second that he has put a kid like Wiggins on the back burner. This is probably the biggest recruit (yeah I said it) that he has had a shot at since he has been at UK. He is that big of a game changer, the unfortunate thing is that Wiggins knows it and I think he is just demanding a little more attention.

    Bom Bom Bommmmmmmmmmm

He just wants to be certain he is making the right choice. It would be ill-advised to make a decision this important without fully exploring all options. The kid would be wise to speak with as many coaches as he can and visit several school. In the end, he will be cutting down nets in UK Blue.

I feel like a lot of other schools just haven’t even bothered. They get it, it’s between UK and FSU. Why waste their time. Wiggins probably is disappointed he isn’t getting all the attention a once-in-a-generation player should and would like more. No issue with it, nothing of it bothered me.

Well, the choices are: go somewhere else, and have his one year in college be a mere footnote in history when he moves on to the pro’s, or go to UK and be part of something legendary, perhaps the greatest recruiting class of all time and the first team ever to achieve a perfect 40-0 record. It would be an easy decision for me. Maybe he needs to sit down and talk to A.D. or MKG.

If Randle does come to UK, where is the room for playing time with all these guys: Randle, Wiggins, Wiltjer, Will Cauley-Stein, Poythress (Probably gone to the NBA), James Young (More of a 3 than a 4 i know but still has size),and Marcus Lee. Is Wiggins reclassifying to 2013 for sure??? It seems like UK has a better chance at getting him if he doesnt…

  18. Either way...
    10:15 am October 23, 2012 Permalink

James Young must know that he probably won’t start in front of Aaron Harrison as shooting guard or Andrew Wiggins as small forward (if Wiggins comes to UK). Marcus Lee must know he wouldn’t start over Julius Randle as power forward (if Randle comes to UK). Likewise, Wiggins and Randle must know they are guaranteed a starting spot, even at UK (even though Cal doesn’t tell them that and doesn’t promise anything like that), and will most likely still be superstars in the media, even if they’re among the Harrison twins, James Young, Marcus Lee, Cauley-Stein, and Kyle Wiltjer.

I think they (Wiggins and Randle) are both really smart and know all their options very well. We’ll see what happens from there.

Andrew Wiggins plays like a young Lebron James, (looks to have a more polished game than MKG already maybe) and Julius Randle looks like a more athletic Terrence Jones, maybe better. Wiggins is a cant-miss type of player. Gotta get that guy.

Matt, you are distorting what he said. The boy never said he was “opening up” his recruitment. He said he had never closed it, and was surprised and [clearly] disappointed that so few schools were recruiting him. You have stirred up the BBN in the process unnecessarily. Be more careful and precise in what you say. You used to be a lawyer — you should know better.

RealCatsFan’s post at #12 nailed it. That’s the pitch that surely Cal will be using. If not, I’m sure Coach Cal will see this post and adopt it.

If Wiggins understands these two choices: go to UK and be not only legendary as a recruiting class but have your sights set on a perfect 40-0 record, OR go someplace else, the choice is simple, isn’t it?

I think it’s brilliant marketing and recruiting strategy for Cal to publicly be saying his goal is to go 40-0. Brilliant! I believe that will sell UK and “close” any superstars that were/are the fence.

Glad Coach is got the recruiting area covered it would be tough for me and maybe many other fans to deal with teenagers again. We have been having a lot of luck the last three years, we may be a little spoiled, it seems it may not be as easy as Coach makes it look.

I would love to land this kid like all members of the BBN. But does anybody know much about what this kid wants?

We seem to be able to create a great chemistry with our freshmen each year. Is this kid selfish, would he want to be the star? Is he a team player?

I don’t know the answers, just curious if anyone else was familiar with what Wiggins wants from his one year at college?

Matt… I don’t see how this is bad news. The kid has said all along he wants to be recruited by other schools. Most of these kids already have a good idea of where they want to go, they just want to experience what it’s like to be recruited. Relax… He will be a cat either way

Jerry Meyer posted on twitter that he thinks Wiggins is doing this to get more exposure for his teammates. If more schools become involved and come to watch him they might find another player on his team that they want to offer.

Question that is being raised is does Young’s signing hurt UK’s chance with Wiggins and does Lee’s signing hurt their chance with Randle. Both players are so talented that they will get more than enough playing time and if anyone can convince them of that it is Cal. The biggest concern maybe that if Randle ends up at UF they will have three of the top 10 recruits which could give them a shot at UK and another title for UF. Hopefully Randle realizes that Billy D unlike Cal brings his big men along slowly. Young, Noah, Horford, etc. were not NBA read at one year.
