Andrew Harrison will become the next in a long line of point guards to come through John Calipari’s system. Harrison will join good company with the likes of Derrick Rose, Tyreke Evans, John Wall, Brandon Knight and Marquis Teague, to name a few. Calipari’s most successful point guards have also transformed into the leaders on the team. John Wall and Brandon Knight were two of the best examples in Calipari’s time at Kentucky. Both were clearly the motor that made the rest of the team go at all times.
All of these super talented point guards also had the challenge of coming in as a freshman and being expected not only to perform on the court, but also take on a leadership role. Not only does Calipari ask a lot of these young men, but he’s also asking them to often times lead a group filled with other freshmen.
Although nothing will be certain until the future players arrive on campus, Andrew Harrison is already talking like he’s ready to be a leader in this talented recruiting class. Harrison is also comfortable leading some of the returning Kentucky players. Ben Roberts of the Herald Leader obtained some great quotes from Harrison about the leadership role he expects to step into:
“He (Calipari) told me and Aaron that we’re going to have to come in there and be vocal leaders. Especially me, being the point guard. I’m going to have to come in there and make sure everybody’s working hard. He said that’s what they lacked last year: leadership.”
Another fellow incoming freshman, Julius Randle, appears to be the perfect compliment to his point guard’s leadership role. “I’m not going to leave it all on his shoulders. I’m going to make sure I can do anything I can to help him…because I have his back.”
