An update on Neal Brown

Neal Brown is one of the top candidates for the Kentucky offensive coordinator position, but the possibility of becoming a head coach in Conference USA has delayed a decision from the Danville native and current Texas Tech assistant.  According to Football Scoop, Brown is holding off to hear from a “school in the south” about its recently vacated head coaching position, and the speculation is it’s Southern Miss.  The Golden Eagles’ Yahoo! Rivals website called Brown the fastest rising candidate on the list.

It’ll be tough to convince Brown to take another coordinator job if Southern Miss, or any other school, offers him a head coaching position.  He may be slipping from Kentucky’s grasp, especially if the rumors of an interview in Hattiesburg later this week are true.

Southern Miss? I wouldn’t want to go there if they offered the presidency and sweet tea for life.

He basically has 3 years of experience as an OC and is 32 years old. His HC opportunities will come. He needs to be patient and add more experience to his resume. If he doesn’t end up at UK so be it but I hope for his sake it isn’t because he takes a HC job too early. I read comment from the So Miss AD yesterday that included him in the mix.

Look no further than Joker Phillips to see what happens when an OC takes a head coaching job before he’s ready

You know would it be funny if UK hired Patrino as OC makes sense gives UK a great recruiting OC and it gives them leverage with him if he leaves it’s no big deal well just go out and fine the best replacement OC if this happens , which i’st likely UK football would be fun that’s for sure.

It’s hard to imagine someone passing up an opportunity to be a head coach. Think about it, if your manager came to you and said we would like to promote you with an X amount of pay increase, would you turn it down because you thought you weren’t prepared or ready for it? I don’t think so. I’d say if offered, he’ll take it. If he’s off the board, who is next in line?

I thought Barnhart said he would give Stoops all the financial resources he would need to succeed. Offer Brown as much or more than Sou Miss offers. It’s Southern Miss, for chrissake! Can’t imagine they would pay that well for HC. That way Brown could make just as much and gain some needed experience for a few years before heading out for a more lucrative HC position. See Kingsbury or Smart for exhibit A.

Why would somebody take a HC job in Conference USA instead of a OC in the best conference in America for what will probably be the same amount of money? I could probably understand it a little better if he went to somewhere like Louisiana Tech but Southern Miss just went 0-12 in conference usa.

South Florida is interviewing for a coach also, and if Taggart gets it, WKU would be looking also. This might take a while.

been to Hattiesburg many times, it is right next to Camp Shelby Mississississipisipipippi,(stay away from Ropers there) wouldnt go there willingly..EVER. But more power to him and best of luck if he does, could be a good stepping stone to a bigger conference football school.

  23. I think Arkansas St. might be giving him a look also because of their past coaches who ran the spread, Hugh Freeze as well as Malzahn.

Neal is not coming to UK as the OC! Neal is established as a very good OC at TT. He wants to be a HC obviously. He interviewed for the UMass HC job a year ago. Why in the world would he do a lateral move to UK and start rebuilding again? It hain’t gonna happen. He interviewed for the UK HC job right after Joker flamed out. Obviously MB didn’t want him as HC. He should stay right where he is and be a little more patient and good things will come along. There’s a sh__ load of good OC out there right now and Stoops knows exactly who they are. Sorry Neal, I think you just missed the Big Blue bus. Stoops’ Troops wait for no one. Good luck

  32. 27, I haven’t heard he was a candidate for HC at UK. He was never mentioned in any article I remember reading except as an OC. Do you have a source?

Klingsbury would leave Texas A&M for UK why? UK would take Tony Franklin back at UK after he basically ratted out UK during the Claude Bassett debacle (not that Franklin wasn’t telling the truth, but still)??? Why???? Tee Martin?? People talk about Joker not coaching up WR’s. Martin didn’t show anything as a position coach at UK with the WR’s and he has ZERO experience scheming an offense. C’mon guys, gotta do better than these names!
