An Odd Conversation with Dan Dakich

74771865_indiana_v_chattanooga

One of the best parts of doing the daily radio show is getting to talk to voices from all over the country. Sometimes those conversations showcase that media members we didn’t know previously actually have a great personality and are fascinating…call it the Ian Eagle principle. Then sometimes interviews go in a different direction. Today’s interview with former IU player and current radio host Dan Dakich was one of the stranger ones ever. From the get go, he was crazy defensive and sat out on a rambling narrative that was not only hard to follow, it wasn’t really responsive to the questions asked. Over the course of the ten minutes, all I could really glean from what he said was:

— He doesn’t talk to Indiana fans every day.

— He has emails and letters saying that he is “bitter and angry”

— He doesn’t need a “dot com guy, a poll or Vegas” to tell him what he sees

— He doesn’t care who wins…make sure you know that.

— It won’t be an upset if IU beats UK because Indiana beat Cornell two years ago

— Indiana can “score the ball.”

— He is not going to break down this game because that is not what coaches do.

Following Dakich was impossible and listening to him get more and more worked up during the interview was slightly uncomfortable. As always, I appreciate him coming on the show and apparently UK fans giving him a hard time provided fodder for his afternoon show in Indianapolis. But still, one has to wonder why, after ten minutes, he was unable to give one reason why it wouldn’t be an upset if Indiana beats Kentucky. Webster’s defines “upset” as:

To defeat unexpectedly (an opponent favored to win).

Dan doesn’t seem to agree. To hear his thoughts, and the rest of hour 1 of the show, listen below (the interview starts about 21 minutes in). If you would like to subscribe to the KSR podcast (and you really should), click at this link

Myron Medcalf (ESPN) in responding to the question “What’s going to be the next big upset?”:

Indiana over Kentucky. Tom Crean’s Hoosiers are due for a huge win. Assembly Hall will be buzzing like Times Square on New Year’s Eve for this matchup. That atmosphere will fuel an emerging IU’s upset over the Cats.

Get this guy on your show tomorrow, Matt. Maybe he can tell us in a coherent fashion (unlike Dakich) why an IU win wouldn’t be an upset.

I guess I’m in the minority, but I listened to it and it didn’t seem as crazy as everyone’s making it out to be. I also thought he was very complimentary on UK and Calipari…but I do think he was wrong to say he never talks to Indiana fans when he obviously does.

it was odd to say the least….when i listened i initially thought that he just bullied matt into not talking or asking more questions but after thinking about it, it was so weird that it was justifiable to just get him off air as fast as possible.

he articulated reasons why indiana has a SHOT lol…..nothing that he said leads one to believe that indy should be favored. and calling people dot com boys and pointing to his coaching background just makes him sound more like a numb skull.

he said that if they keep terrence jones from doing what he normally does blah blah blah…..bottom line, if you have to keep a team from doing what they normally do then it would be an upset if your strategy works plain and simple. if your plan is to stop stars then you will be defying odds by doing that.

but then again indiana “knows how to score the ball”…..kentucky better take note cause us being top 5 in offensive efficiency must mean we dont know how to score the ball? wait…..

we need to drop indy off our schedule…we could potentially help their stock more than they can help themselves by even giving them the opportunity to potentially beat us….the have the world to gain and nothing to lose and we have nothing to gain…also factor in their mouths and attitudes this past week and you have me voting against continueing this series…i hope there are more like me

IU stormed the court last year at home, when they beat then #22 Illinois, who did not even make the NCAA, and Crean ran in to the stands and hugged his wife. So, when has IU showed the toughness it will take too talk so much sh!t and win a game like this? If, Crean is supposed to be a friend of Coach Cal’s why does he try to get his fans to be so rude to Cal and UK players?

    a feeling of supremacy
On the other hand, some people describe other feelings tagging along with the high:
    irritability
    paranoia
    restlessness
    anxiety
    Signs of using cocaine include:
    dilated pupils
high levels of energy and activity

Indiana will hang tough for about 10 minutes, powered by emotion and adrenalin and a few 3’s. After that they’ll be running on fumes and will collapse under the onslaught of superior firepower.
The floor at Assembly Hall will be a kill zone for Kentucky.
Look for Teague and Wiltjer to shine as Jones, Davis and MKG own the boards.
    UK wins going away 86-58.

While I agree this was a weird interview, I will say that Matt has taken a few things that Dakich said out of context.

    — He never said, because we beat Cornell 2 years ago, we will beat UK. His point was that IU has struggled down the stretch. He mentioned beating Pittsburgh last year, and Cornell 2 years ago when UK beat them in the Sweet 16. After those early season wins, IU struggled.

    — Matt has made a big deal about Dakich saying he doesn’t talk to IU fans everyday. That’s because he doesn’t. His show is based out of Indianapolis and is focused on Indiana sports. Callers to his show this time of the year are predominantly Indianapolis Colts and Pacers fans, and more recently, Butler Bulldogs fans. He also talks to IU, Purdue, and Notre Dame fans. You can argue that he didn’t articulate it right, but his show is not an IU homer show like KSR is…..

One of the best lines I remember as a kid listening to UK/IU games was Ralph and Cawood’s comments coming after the Cats beat IU in 1975 and Knight refused to shake Joe B’s hand. Ralph said, “coach Knight showing the true coach that he is refuses to shake the hand of Joe Hall”
Cawood: “Well, I am sure Coach Joe Hall could care less, or, if you’ll pardon the expression, Gives a damn”. Ouch! I miss the rivalry we had back then. I’m sure that it will return when Crean gets his recruits in next year.

Yeah, I agree. That was one weird interview. The hoosiers sure are envious!

I kinda agree with dakich, its not a huge upset when we win Saturday….its only a big upset outside of Indiana! Even if Cheatapari figures out a way to win….it will be vacated in a couple years! Oh and remember ky is playing in Assembly Hall not RAPE ARENA! So it will actually be 5 on 5 not 8 on 5!

  52. Mr. Burks

Hoosierpride, didn’t IU just come off probation? IU and their fans live in the past – living off 1987 lucky shot championship (no future in greatness in sight), all white teams (fired a black ccoach after a Final Four and only three seasons) and Bobby Knight, a player beating, liar, false fact giver who was done for by the 1995 season.

IU days are over. The Big Ten now belongs to Ohio State and WI. Get over it.

  53. Mr. Burks

    hoosierpride, let’s face facts –

1 – UK cheats? Your IU team just came off probation

2 – Your team lives off of the 1987 luck shot Championship

3 – Racism is alive and well in IU. Mike Davis takes you to a Final Four and is fired due to being black in Indiana (case closed)

4 – You still dreams about Bob Knight, a player beating, liar, false fact giver and was done for as a legit coach by 1995

5 – IU is done. Ohio State now runs the Big Ten

51-wow that’s some original stuff. That evil cheating Calipari. Vacating Cal’s wins. Rape Arena. Man did you think that up all by yourself?
I can’t agree with the idea that it won’t be an upset if IU wins. If a team is ranked #1 and gets beat, it is an upset. This is a really stupid point you guys are trying to argue. It’s not about UK or IU or even basketball. In sports, when the team with the best ranking, talent and record gets beat by a lesser talented and ranked team it is an upset. I hope IU gets better in the future so the games we play are actually fun to watch. But for years IU hangs for maybe the first half and then UK blows you out. It’s boring and it’s your fault for sucking the last few decades.
