Alexander Graham Bell’s Saturday Night Post

To commemorate this horrible Saturday of UK hoops, let’s pay homage to the inventor of the telephone – Alexander Graham Bell would have turned 166 this Sunday. Bell was quite the inventor and man-of-many-hats during his time, including being one of the founders of a person favorite of mine National Geographic Society. However, some would call Bell by a different title – thief. Those familiar with the Elisha Gray vs. Alexander Graham Bell controversy will recall that some claim that Bell stole the telephone, his most famous ‘invention’, from Gray.

Speaking of steals – Arkansas’ Mardracus Wade racked up 4 steals and Coty Clarke nabbed 3 steals tonight versus Kentucky.

Screen Shot 2013-03-02 at 8.17.09 PM

– Well, that sucked. Arkansas beat Kentucky 73-60 tonight in Fayetteville. Check out Drew’s in-depth recap of the disappointing evening.

– After the loss, Lunardi now has the Cats back OUT of his latest Bracketology. However, despite the Ole Miss loss today, he has them in. Hmmm…

– 11 of the 12 teams in Lunardi’s “First Four Out,” “Last Four In” and “Next Four Out” were all in action today. Of the 11 teams that played, 7 came away with a loss. The bubble picture hasn’t cleared up much this week, but perhaps the good news is that other teams in similar positions to Kentucky have been losing as well.

– All hope is not lost for securing a semi-easy route in the SEC tournament. Andrew McCarthy pointed out that, thanks to that Ole Miss loss today, Kentucky can secure the double-bye in the SEC tournament if they beat Georgia this week. March 13-17 should be a raucous time in Nashville, and here’s to hoping the Cats show their best down there.

– This guy was the hero of the night, providing laughs for all. Whoever guesses what’s inside this man’s front pocket wins a prize from Drew. (hint: the prize is a Cool Ranch Doritos Locos Taco.)

Screen Shot 2013-03-02 at 8.43.47 PM

– The loss was filled with depressing stats, one of which was a season low 5 assists. In fact, the 5 assists were the lowest of the Calipari era at Kentucky. #ShellFish?

– Kentucky once again failed to show the same “fight” on the road as they have shown recently at home. Kentucky has been able to overcome runs by the opponent when in the safety net of Rupp Arena, but when teams go on big runs on the road, Kentucky seems to back down from the challenge. “They never turned on the fight, and that disappointed me,” said John Calipari after the game.

– Even after the poor showing and lack of fight today, Calipari still feels confident that his team is capable of making a run… “if they put it together.” Time is running out with only 2 games remaining before one final chance to make a run in the SEC tournament.

Archie Goodwin made an interesting post-game comment about how he thought UK had “jumped that wall and would be able to run through the rest of these teams.” The 3-game winning streak (all at home) was nice, but was that really cause for feeling that UK could run through the rest of the opponents on the schedule?

– After Wednesday night, were you thinking to yourself: How could Mississippi State beat anyone? Me too. Yet somehow Ole Miss managed to lose to Mississippi State today. Kentucky might have a love/hate relationship with Ole Miss after the Rebels’ play in the last few weeks. When Ole Miss performs poorly, one of Kentucky’s few one time “quality wins” loses value. When Ole Miss performs well, they potentially move into Kentucky’s slot for a spot in the field of 68. I’m not sure what we want Ole Miss to do at this point.

Ryan Kelly returned back for the Duke Blue Devils tonight, who beat Miami in a close game. You’ll remember that last time Duke played Miami, they were absolutely crushed by the Hurricanes. That was a fun night to post DidDukeWin.com. And tonight is the opposite of that.

– Julius Randle won a state championship tonight. In doing so, he dropped 34 points, 20 rebounds, and 6 steals. The kid is a pure hoss and we’d love to add him to the 2013 recruiting class. Come down, Julius.

Alright, kids. I am semi depressed about the game. Lets all go to sleep and wake up tomorrow to a new day where UK basketball doesn’t lose in SEC play. See you then.

Ole Miss is in the Next 4 out. Tennessee is in though after being swept by Georgia.

How in Hades is Tennessee moved up to the First Four In after getting beat by Georgia today and their record going to 17-12. And Ole Miss gets beat by a Mississippi St. team that is better suited for Division II and remain in. Meanwhile, UK loses at Arkansas, who is practically unbeatable at home, and drops to the First Four Out. Lunardi has officially lost any credibility with me.

The defense is what it is. If this team wants to have a chance to win games they need 5 guys in double figures and everyone needs to grab at least 3 boards. If we don’t score we won’t win, each guy just has to figure out how can I get 10 points and help my teammates get their 10. At this point everyone has to score, everyone has to rebound or we won’t win. Our best offense is no one in the paint and beat your man with one dribble with everyone who’s not a 3 point shooter crashing the boards. Harrow can beat his man if he can hang on to the ball. Archie can beat his man if he can hang on to it. I’m tired of seeing our wings run from side to side never getting a look and our rotation of the ball is so slow it wouldn’t matter anyway. Spread the floor, pick and roll, run back door cuts and if we’re gonna go down, let’s go down running instead of standing still. The press hasn’t worked all year all we end up doing is giving up easy buckets and terrible mismatches. No more switching, no more press.

Forget it we do not deserve to go , we cannot lose to a team with an 85rpi and expect to go. We got punked tonight as simple as that. Harrow sucked yet again and u cannot win with crappy guard play. These guys need to stay home after being embarrassed by yet another bad team. Just a terrible recruiting year as the talent is just not there.

I am so tired of creating scenarios where this team MAKES the tourney. We are Kentucky and we shouldnt be struggling to just get in. End the season now, who cares. This team is horrible and a complete embarrassment to the commonwealth’s team. Pull every scholarship and start new next year. I’ve always supported the past teams but I’m done withthese guys, not one deserves to wear that uniform.

How on earth can an opposing team or fan base say Cal is a “cheater?” If that were the case wouldn’t we have a better team on the floor? Guess this season dismisses any truth to that nonsense.

Lastly I must say our guards are awful. Fundamentally, ball movement/passing is horrible and they have no idea how to attack full court pressure. Guards should avoid turning your back to the pressure as well as getting trapped in the corners. Furthermore, if your man goes to double flash to an open area.

I hate to say this but just getting in the tournament is not going to be the answer. So what we get in??? If we don’t lose the first game we will lose the second. The kids have more give up and whining in them than anything I’ve ever seen. And for WCS to say some people didn’t show up is ridiculous. He needs to show up at practice to the damn free throw line. He has a worse percentage than Howard does on the NBA. Help your teammates. Don’t throw them under the bus. They all sucked today. 5 assists shows how much they like to create shots for each other. Next year will be another story. UK will go on and be a power program with or without any of these kids playing there. Sad thing is that a bunch of these kids would be good if they played for each other by passing the ball. So next year they might be pretty good with the stars coming in (just coming off the bench) unless Noel stays. That man is playing every minute. We lost our heart when he went down. He’s the only one that always had it.

    6:08 am March 3, 2013 Permalink

Archie’s post-game comment epitomizes what’s been wrong with this team from day 1, and why they were an utter disappointment this year. WCS has made similar statements a few times this year. I know Julius, Nerlins, Jarrod, and Kyle weren’t guilty of such immaturity, but you could certainly see it with Alex and Archie…and WCS, at times, from his tweets/comments. You can’t coach stupidity or arrogance out of a kid. Cal hit a wall with a few of these kids early in the season, because of character flaws that simply can’t be corrected, except by the individual. I’ll be glad to see Alex and Archie gone, because they were never really true UK players to begin with, and Alex in particular hasn’t been worthy of a D1 scholly….and certainly not of one from UK. WCS could still be a great team player, but it sounds like Cal is already resigned to him being gone as well.

  18. Just saying
    6:36 am March 3, 2013 Permalink

Anyone ever think that these kids do get it?? I personally think that with the true exception of Alex, these guys are playing ABOVE their potential. Harrow is a skinny, timid kid that has 3 really bad games all year, all ending in a loss but he was NEVER considered a leader. NC State had no issues with him leaving and moved their SG to the PG spot because they knew he was a better player. Archie is innately selfish, and has no honest basketball talent. He can’t shoot, not a great finisher at te rim and refuses to play team ball. Mayes was playing at Wright State last year, and this is his 3rd college in 4 years, and he’s our “experience” and our “catalyst”. WCS was playing FOOTBALL last year. Poison was a walk-on, hood is coming off a major knee injury and wasn’t that good before that. Wiltjer is a sharp shooter, that’s it. He’s slow and weak, but we knew that last year.

The point is our guys are simply not that talented. Every Cal team I’ve ever seen had atleast one guy that you knew would dominate his guy, and when times were tough you simply give him the ball and say “go make a play”. This doesn’t have either of those. And sadly, all we have talked about all year is the number of draft picks on this team. If Noel goes, and he will, we’re likely talking about 4 guys leaving for the NBA coming off a 12-13 loss team and a possible NIT team, think about that for a second. Someone is wrong, either these guys are not NBA players, or Cal really let this team down. Personally I think the former is more the truth.

    6:47 am March 3, 2013 Permalink

I am also disappointed that Goodwin and Poythress haven’t lived up to our expectations. But that’s just it. We have had so many amazing freshman that have did great things in their first and only year. We have lost our perspective. If these guys were freshman role players on a team with solid upperclassmen, we’d be excited about their future with the team. That being said, I would still be concerned with Goodwins selfishness and Poythress lack of drive and desire. The rest of this team is made up of a bunch of role players thrust into bigger roles than they can handle. Hopefully next years freshman will be like the ones we’ve had the past three years.

The reason we only had 5 assists is because our guards could not get the offense started until 9-10 sec left on shot clock. Dribbling the ball 45 ft from the basket doesn’t equate to offense.

1 year out of the last 4 is a great % for Cal. I think Cal knew how limited this team would be given how many players we missed on late last year. Shabazz, Anthony Bennett, Mark Lyons, Alex Oriakhi, Gary Harris, Arsalan Kazemi, to name a few. Hopefully next year this situation gets resolved given what we will have to work with.

  23. Bledsoe's Biceps
    8:00 am March 3, 2013 Permalink

I agree with 22 on the lack of assists. It wasn’t selfishness. The dribble drive offense simply has not been a good fit for this team. They pass the ball around the perimeter until 10 – 12 seconds are left, then they finally decide someone needs to get a shot off. All year I’ve said they have been running the modern version of the 4 corners offense. Sometimes it also looks like the Harlem Globtrotter weave. But we aren’t playing the Washington Generals.

UK was handcuffed by not being able to foul (limited bench) and Arkansas having unlimited fouls. Why unlimited? 3 reasons 1)Doug Shows hates Cal 2) Because of that the officials let UofA hack away more than a serial killer 3) Deeper bench with more fouls to give. Hogs led with fouls at the half 10-8, but we did by the end of the game 24-21. These UK kids reacted similarly as they did at Tennessee when they were unprepared without Nerlens. Also when you’ve got a guy in your grill trying to steal the ball it takes more energy to fight him off or get away. We don’t have enough decent bench players to sub for tired players.

30- I saw exactly what you saw. But other UK fans would rather put their heads in the sand and not own up to the fact we got raped. They would rather blame our players. Which I think they played confused as a result of what Doug Shows was giving them. Most people go to prison for the violence that I saw yesterday. They were allowed to assualt us, but our touch fouls got called every single time.

I keep hearing that we played soft yesterday, and maybe we did. But I will say this, if UK was getting called on touch fouls, how would have playing “tougher” helped UK? It wouldn’t. Playing “tougher” would have resulted in more foul calls against us. This game was over before it began.

    33- right on the money.

A deeper bench may halped us put more bodies on the floor. But when I saw the discrepancy of calls between both teams, I said to myself, it makes no sense for us to play more aggressive, it will just mean more foul calls on us.

We had 30 defensive rebounds….that is lots of chances to run down and score before the defense can set up and get their hands on us… Cal does not coach this team on how to fast break or they refuse to do it…that was our only chance because our half court offense is pretty iffy…

We need to learn to play more aggressively like UL, Ark and others. We counter with hand checks and grabs that get called every time. Most refs will let you body up and push the other player around as long as you do not use your hands too agressively. The refs tend to even up fouls in the second half, so the advantage goes to the more agressive team.

We are just not a very good team and when things go against us we get timid instead of agressive. this is just a team that has never come together and Cal cannot say anything for fear of losing it.

If coach is not satisfied with the drill,,,,bring out the tapes and show everyone Duke reruns,,,,they are the masters. As for the hand checks,,,you see it across all of college basketball. If they do not want to call it,,,,fine,,,,but don’t let it slide for 20 minutes and then start calling it in the second half. I agree with 45,,,,the aggressive team has the big advantage.
