UK Fans of the Day Want Afternoon Notes

A few notes on this exceptionally cold Florida day….

 – First and foremost, if you haven’t read this story by Rivals’ Jason King yet, make sure you do so.  And make sure you have a big strong shoulder to cry on after.  King writes an article on the special bond between Billy Donovan, Anthony Grant and John Pelphrey that emerged while they were at Florida and they all endured losing children.  It’s an excellent piece.

 – Not one to just kick back and enjoy the praise, King then puts together his midseason All-American squad and puts Brandon Knight on the second team.  Which is good because first is the worst and second is the best.  I’ll not let you tell me any differently until it no longer favors my argument.  Here is the list.

 – Matt mentioned today on the show that UK has seven primary targets for 2012 recruiting.  They are Shabazz Muhammad, Andre Drummond, Perry Ellis, Archie Goodwin, L.J. Rose, Alex Murphy and Kaleb Tarczewski.  The Cats expect to land three of them.  If you’re a KSR fan, you can expect a deeper breakdown posted tomorrow.  And if you’re a KSR writer, you can expect me to ask you at some point to write this for tomorrow.

 – Creighton hoops has a novel way of getting their fans fired up for their game with Wichita State.  A white out?  That’s nothing.  How about a white out and $1 beers?  Drew Franklin just started a petition for Rupp to do the same and put his press pass on Ebay.

 – Big news out of Bristol today as Dick Vitale signed on with ESPN through 2015.  Next time you hit the Broken Egg, The Sheepherder is on him.

 – Speaking of heartburn, Seth Davis will chat with Mark Emmert tonight on Courtside with Seth Davis.  He’ll also have the corpse formerly known as Wally Sczcerbiak on the show.

 – Also, don’t forget to check back tonight for the FAN OUTFITTERS FAN CONTEST.  We’ll be posting the information at around 9 and you’ll want to be ready to pick your squad.  The details are in the podcast.

In case you missed it early, Matt and EZ put together another solid episode of Kentucky Sports Radio.  Gregg Doyel joined them to talk NCAA hoops and got so hot that the Emergency Broadcast System had to intervene.  Make sure you check it out.

“the special bond between Billy Donovan, Anthony Grant and John Pelphrey that emerged while they were at Florida and their wives all suffered miscarriages.”

Somewhere in this sentence lurks a Pitino joke…

Now it’s time to say a few Hail Mary’s.

I hope we get more than three prospects for 2012 with the mass exodus of players to the NBA I am expecting from next years team… Assuming they come back after this season, in 2012 we are probably losing: Vargas (senior), Gilcrhist, Teague, Davis, Knight, Lamb, Liggins (seinor) and Miller (senior). Thats 8 of 12/13 players, leaving us 4 or 5 returning players (depending on Lacey/Daniels) and 3 recruits? Don’t know how it will go with an 7-8 man rotation (again based on Lacey/Daniels commitments) consisting of Hood, Poole, Wiltjer, Polson, and the 3 freshman…

Duke and UNC are now shaking in their boots. They could always claim before that Cal/UK didn’t recruit the “same type of players” that they do- meaning Cal went after “academically risky” players, guys with shady AAU connections, or guys hellbent on being one-and-done. Now? Well, of 2012 targets mentioned, Drummond, Muhammad, Rose, Murphy, and Tarczewski are all high priority for Duke and UNC, and Ellis is a straight A student who is down to regional schools (Kansas, KState, Wichita, Oklahoma) plus Memphis and UK.

You already saw Cal’s pull with Wiltjer- no one thought he was a “Calipari-type player” and yet the UK/Cal appeal was such that he signed without even visiting. Cal is making UK THE national program for ANY kid with NBA aspirations, no matter where that kid is from, or what his background is.

JP hasn’t gotten any better in the past 2 years. He would fit best at a Marquette or somewhere smaller. He wouldn’t see the floor at UK.

  21. Wow, Beez. Thanks for linking the story on Donovan, Pel and Grant. It’s a real tear-jerker.

Oh, and not funny #5. Criticize Ricky P all you want (I do), but nothing about the linked story, or Sypher’s abortion, is even remotely funny.

Please don’t link stories like the Donovan story again. I’m not supposed to like that guy, right? What a tragedy? 3 strong families!

No. 9, disagree. Let me guess, all 3 of our prize freshmen are leaving this year? There is NO way to predict who will leave until each season plays out and even then you don’t know because of personalities. Look at the QB from Stanford. My guess is that Knight and Lamb are here 2 or 3 years and I have no clue on next year’s freshmen.

Heck, even Kanter told Cal he’d be here thru next year if he had a choice.
