After over a decade of sucking on the Coach K teet, Johnny Dawkins finally moves on…

Sorry for all of the Duke-centered posts today, but the move by Johnny Dawkins to accept the Stanford head coaching job shocks me.  I’m honestly in utter disbelief.  Who would have thought that he had it in him?

Dawkins has been sitting on the Duke bench since 1998 and has been with the staff since 1996 and he’s never shown the slightest inclination to go out and feast on his own, except for a brief flirtation with Georgetown.  He’s always seemed content to let Coach K chew up the worms and then spit them into his mouth…until today, that is.  That’s when the people over at Stanford decided to turn their program over to a guy who has never had a head coaching gig and doesn’t come from a coaching tree of much success.

Here are the notable former Coach K assistants who have taken head coaching jobs:

 – Tommy Amaker (Seton Hall, Michigan, Harvard) – My favorite, by far. Great recruiter at Seton Hall with nothing to really show for it. Took a tough situation at Michigan and didn’t really do much. Went to Harvard and is being investigated for NCAA infractions. Now, that’s a full resume.
 – Mike Brey (Delaware, Notre Dame) – Yeah, he’s ok I guess. Nothing special, though.
 – Quinn Snyder (Missouri) – A career record of 126-91 and NCAA infractions. Fruity haircut too.
 – David Henderson (Delaware) – Hired in 2000. Fired in 2006 after a 9-21 record.

That’s it.  In all of the years of Coach K being adored and treated like a God, those are the only assistants he’s had to take head coaching jobs (at least according to my less than stellar research).  So, good luck with that Stanford.  Just because Dawkins looks like the old coach, that doesn’t mean he’s going to be him.
