So the news that broke everyone’s heart of the past week is that Adam Williams has decided to go to Marshall, thus joining the Thundering Herd and forever leaving the Big Blue Nation. Sources (and I actually have them in this instance) tell me that Adam really wanted to stay, and interestingly, Tubby tried to get Adam to stay, telling him that he truly believed he would get minutes next year and be a true contributor in his last two years. However evil old dad “Tex” Williams apparently had stepped in and, as a former Marshall grad, made the decision for his son.
This continues the long tradition of meddling fathers, a phenomenon that must make college coaches crazy. There cant be anything worse than being a successful college coach and seeing some guy, in this case a high school coach, come in and tell you either (a) how to run a team or (b) that his son should be playing or is leaving. I have never actually met Tex but he reminds me of some father out of a modern movie set in the 1950s that is always standing by his car, either picking his daughter up from the “rebel” boyfriend’s house with a scowl on his face or telling Johnny that if he doesn’t throw the ball better against Midland, he will never live up to the family name.
Adam always struck me as a kid who just liked being on the team. He seemed to love the attention, always signing autographs as much as anyone on the team (besides Shagari). He flirted with the ladies with the best of them and always loved the scene in the big time games. Maybe he wasn’t UK material, but maybe he didn’t care. Maybe he just liked being here. But too bad old “Tex” had to come in and ruin the day. We will miss you Adam….enjoy Huntington.
