A Way Too Early 2013 NBA Mock Draft

No other team in college basketball is affected by the NBA draft like Kentucky is. Our year-to-year roster is based almost entirely on how the draft goes. Granted, it’s way too early to take a mock draft seriously, but we have to at least keep an eye on how analysts are viewing our players going into the season. Just to take a look ahead, recently updated it’s 2013 Mock Draft, and there were a couple of surprises in it.

1. Cody Zeller, Indiana

2. Shabazz Muhammad, UCLA

3. James McAdoo, UNC

4. Nerlens Noel, Kentucky

5. Tony Mitchell, North Texas

6. Alex Poythress, Kentucky

7. Otto Porter, Georgetown

8. Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, UGA

9. Ben McLemore, Kansas

10. Alex Len, Maryland

12. Ryan Harrow, Kentucky

17. Willie Cauley-Stein, Kentucky

19. Gorgui Dieng, Louisville

A lot of things surprised me with this mock. First, Archie Goodwin is not in the mock at all. Are they not taking Goodwin’s game seriously, or is it possible he could stay an extra year with Calipari? I’m thinking the latter. Secondly, this is the highest I’ve ever seen Ryan Harrow listed in a mock draft. I think people are starting to realize his talent, and how dangerous he could be this season. His full season with that championship team and learning Calipari’s system will be invaluable. Harrow has all the tools to do great things for the Wildcats, and I think fans should be excited for him to lead our team. Finally, are we sleeping on Willie Cauley-Stein? 17th overall is not too shabby, and definitely speaks to the type of talent he has. If he plays at that type of level, Kentucky will be a very scary team…. again.

4 of the top 17 players, with Goodwin not even on the list. granted who knows how it will play out, but i really think this year’s team has a chance to be great and defend the title. and if we get the Harrison twins, Randle and a couple others for ’13, maybe with a couple holdovers (Wiltjer + whoever else).. you never know. could be 3-4 straight Final4’s and a couple NC’s.

lol, its funny to hear the UofL fans hating on Harrow, saying he wont amount to much, and yet he’s a projected lottery pick. i know its a down draft class, but Siva’s, what, second round? still? after 4 years?

Noel to New Orleans with Davis would be AWESOME!

WCS is going to shock people. Cal is already prepping us. I’m sure Cal has seen enough already to know that WCS will be better than Daniel Orton.

I have been saying all along that if WCS plays 20+ minutes he could be a candidate to go one and done. Mainly because this draft is so weak also because Cal and his staff have a unique ability to highlight players strengths while not overly exposing their weaknesses, that’s great coaching, while Cal is always discredited or said not to be a great X&Os coach thats GREAT coaching. Players except their roles here and thrive in this system because of it, making them very marketable to NBA teams. Perfect example is Josh Harrellson followed by DeAndre Liggins and even Doran Lamb. How can Anthony Davis be the player of the year while taking the 5th most shots on the team? Coaching. Execution. Trust. If this team is a final four team I could easily see Willie leaving early, Orton did.

Where is Wiltjer? Surely Cauley-Stein’s buddy has improved along with him.

Zeller will be one of the worst #1 picks ever. Maybe not Kwame bad, but definitely in Kenyon Martin/Joe Smith territory.

    Draftexpress has:

    #2 Noel
    #7 Poythress
    #9 Goodwin
    #25 Harrow

Draft Express would disagree on Goodwin:

    2 – Noel
    7 – Poythress
    9 – Goodwin
    25 – Harrow

So can this team beat the turd birds at Yum? If not, they’ll be running their traps constantly.

I agree with #8, Zeller is a major bust waiting to happen. He is a great college player, but I don’t see the potential to warrant him being a top 5 pick much less the #1, especially when you have guys like Shabazz, Nerlens and James McAdoo available. Andrew Bogut would be an extremely high ceiling comparison for Zeller IMO, and he is more likely to be a Nick Collison type. If he turns out to be another Nick Collison, then he will have a long career, but that is not top 5 worthy. Some of these “EXPERTS” are predicting him to be Kevin McHale!

What kind of offense can we expect from Noel? We’ve heard about his defense, but can we get 10 ppg from him? Is WCS going to be the go-to for offense and Noel come in for defense?

i agree #12. Zeller is not as imposing a guy as Bogut… Nick Collison does see to be his NBA analog. Really, how much better is he than his older brother? He does not have much potential to improve. With this weak draft coming up, he better declare after this season, or he’s the next Jared Sullinger.

#14 is forgetting about Coach Cal, Jorts, Liggins, Miller, all guys when they got here were not NBA talent. Their time with Cal got them drafted. Coach Cal is one of the best at developing talent. So Ryan, who has the talent, one year under Cal…watch out.

Goodwin wasn’t in the top ten in his class. How would he be a top nba draft pick?

Tony Mitchell, Otto Porter, Ben McLemore, Alex Len… This draft is like a who’s who of who’s not.

i do not think cody zeller will/should ne number 1. i have yet to see what he looks like next season but unless there is major improvement, i do not see him being number 1. but definitely a lottery pick

Cody Zeller=worst #1 DP since Greg Oden. Let’s all hope it’s Portland who gets the #1 pick. Just for fun. So they can pass on Michael Jordan, Kevin Durant, and The Bazz.

1 – Next years team has a better chance of going out first round than we do of going back-back. That’s not what I’m predicting, but I do see us as a 5-6 seed and those games are very prone to first round upsets.
