UK released the final depth chart today for the Louisville football game and the final position battles were decided. Matt Smith won the Center job, Jacob Dufresne beat out Ridge Wilson for the final Linebacker position and Joe Mansour was not selected to be the starting kicker (to some great surprise). But the most interesting development was the decision by Joker to put Trinity High School’s Luke McDermott as the starter at Defensive Tackle. McDermott’s story is a great one…he comes to UK as a preferred walk-on, works hard during his time in Lexington and now will start against his hometown team. McDermott had rarely been spoken of during this fall and his placement in the starting lineup showcases just how hard it can be to get a feel for what is going on in football camp. It is an exciting time for Luke and it raises a question for UK….will the Defensive Line be up to SEC standards?
If so, it will not only be good for Luke, but it will showcase how much depth UK has built up over the last few years. If not, then it might suggest UK is in for a long year stopping the run and getting a pass rush. Saturday will tell the tale.
