From a basketball point of view, Nerlens comes to UK. The only way he doesn’t is if there are personal preferences that come into play (location, relationship with coach, etc.)

Bazz is going to UCLA. He can be “The Man” there. Not sure if anyone noticed, but he took 21 shots in the McDonalds All Star game and 35 shots in the Nike Hoops Summit. Bottom line, the kid wants his shots and he won’t get that many at UK.

    8) It’s rumored his dad has something to do with adidas, but his sister does for sure. From cbs article:

Another interesting twist to Muhammad’s recruitment is the perceived role of Adidas.

Industry sources have claimed for more than a year that Muhammad would almost certainly land at UCLA because Adidas is heavily invested in Muhammad through its sponsorship of Dream Vision, and because the Bruins are one of the shoe company’s flagship programs. Some have even suggested Holmes is on payroll with Adidas, but he emphatically denied that to CBSSports.com. But Holmes did acknowledge that his daughter, Asia Muhammad, has a contract with Adidas. She’s a professional tennis player ranked 386th in the world.

5- I understand what you’re saying, and maybe that’s what they’re thinking. But Georgetown does not have the pieces to place around Nerlens to achieve that goal. And really, who wants to play in the Princeton offense? UCLA might have enough around Shabazz to be successful; but if Shabazz picks the Bruins, it’s probably because he wants to assure himself of more shot attempts per game (15-25) than he’d get at Kentucky (10-15).
No school is getting more attention right now than UK, so if you’re leaving after one year, it would greatly behoove you to market yourself now so that giant shoe deal is waiting for you in, let’s say, 364 days.
Like Matt said on the radio show, no one is watching UCLA basketball and it’s not a “no one watches b/c they’re no good and Shabazz can change that” argument. It’s a “99% of fans are watching ESPN from 6-10 not FSN from 10-12” argument. And Shabazz cannot change that.

Adidas Power? He is no Derek Rose or Dwight Howard plus Adidas cant pay him at UCLA. Do you all know who Phil Knight is? Maybe you have heard of NIKE…he was in our locker room with UK Championship gear on after we cut down the nets. Who even owns Adidas? If he goes to UCLA it will be because that’s where he wants to go so give the Adidas BS a rest. Nike is bigger better and is the most worn, respected and popular shoe for young athletes across all sports, Adidas makes its money selling soccer gear. UCLA didnt even get those special Adidas jerseys that Loservile and Baylor got because they arent a factor. Kentucky is the place to be and we all know it but if a young man chooses another school then it just may be as simple as that, his choice.

“Muhammad led Dream Vision to a second-place finish in the adidas Super 64 tournament at Rancho High School in July.

During the tournament, media on press row openly speculated that Muhammad would sign with an adidas-sponsored school such as UCLA or Kansas given the fact that adidas sponsors Dream Vision and that Muhammad’s sister, professional tennis player Asia Muhammad, has a contract with adidas.”

Our Champions wanted and did what was needed to win the TEAM NC. Maybe Coach can put together a TEAM this year wanting another NC.

Folks, it’s simple. If these guys come to UK, they are buying into what this past years team did, teamwork and sacrafice. If they don’t pick here, then what they want is their shots and their spotlight and there is nothing wrong with that. I’d prefer the humble and eager to learn than the boastful and ready to leave. His upside and ceiling were as high as Bazz and Noel, but those two guys have been drawing attention for multiple years, and with Nerlins reclassifying, it has thrown the BBN into a tizzy. I guess the fact that we are losing all of our team this year is playing largely on our emotions, which are still elated after banner #8!

I think you guys make this too difficult. Why wouldn’t anyone come to UK? Easy.

Just don’t wanna. Has nothing to do with facilities, one and dones, or trophies. Shabazz is from the west coast and figures that he’ll get to the NBA anywhere, why go to UK if he can be happy playing in UCLA? Who cares what else is going on there; doesn’t really matter if they stink or on probation; he’ll get to the NBA no matter what.

Remember, even before the season started this year, people were saying that Anthony Davis would be the #1 pick this year. He’d have been #1 at Xavier, UCLA or Pepperdine. UK is not an exclusive ticket to the NBA.

I want UK to land all the great talent. But I’m not a fan of either one of these guys. They are already proving to be selfish, self-centered ass clowns.

What made UK’s 2012 team great was the lack of ego. Davis could have played at UCLA and averaged 25.0 PPG. Instead he came to UK and ranked 5th in shots taken. Same can be said about MKG and Teague.

Say UK does land Muhammad and Nerlens, I doubt they could bring a banner home. They will be Wall and Cousins part 2.

I would submit to Shabazz and Nerlens the curious case of CJ Leslie.

He thought he was good enough to make a program relevant and put himself in the national spotlight all by himself.

We all see how that worked out for him.

Take note, kids. Regardless of what the people in your ear are telling you there’s little to no chance you can do it alone.

  62. El Cormanyo
    1:10 pm April 11, 2012 Permalink

Just sort of throwing this out there: There may be an element of UK fatigue coming into play here. I think the allure of being “the man” who carries a team to greatness might be stronger than it’s possible for us to understand. I interviewed Tim Couch one time and he said that the thing that sealed UK as his destination was the idea that he could be part of the program’s ascent, and that if those teams achieved success, he would get to lead that charge, whereas if he had gone to a school with more pedigree, success might come more easily, but he would be just another guy in the system.

Nerlens and Shabbazz have no doubt seen everything good there is to Kentucky, but when something is seen as such an obvious choice for so long, something about that obviousness creates a desire to rebel against the conventional wisdom.

Not saying we miss on both (or either), but it’s at least possible that, even subconsciously, attending another school would be tantamount to establishing a greater sense of identity related to not going where all the other great players seem to have gone for 3 years now.

  65. bmt22033
    1:18 pm April 11, 2012 Permalink

From the perspective of a UK fan, it’s tough to understand why any player would NOT want to play at Kentucky right now. Hell, even as a non-biased, completely objective observer, it’s tough to come up with a lot of (logical) reasons why a recruit wouldn’t want to play here. In reality, however, I’m sure there are a lot of behind-the-scenes factors that we aren’t privy to that help shape these decisions. And we’ll never know for certain why a kid chose not to come here. Calipari is a great recruiter. Maybe the *best*. If he, of all people, couldn’t sell a recruit on this program, then it was probably for the best. What’s more important is that we get players who really *want* to be here. Players that are going to listen to Cal, buy in to his system, work hard every day in practice and sacrifice their individual highlight reels for the betterment of the whole team. Why worry about whether those kids are ranked in the top 10 by Scout, Rivals, etc.? Cal knows what he’s doing. The man has been here for three years. In that time, UK has been to the elite eight (which ended because of a “perfect storm” scenario), a final four (again, 4/5 times, Kentucky wins that game against UCONN) and now won an 8th national championship. In Cal we trust. It’ll be okay everybody. Take a deep breath and relax.

Shabazz is a glitterbug !! Loves Vegas and the L.A. star-studded scene. He’ll get to play at Pauley in front of 6,000 (wow!!) torpid fans ! Maybe he wants Jack the Hack movie star to come to games and sit in the front row – unless it interferes with a crappy Laker game. He talks too much, tweets too much and shoots too much. So why would he pick a boring place like Lexington where it’s cold. Nearest surf and casino are too far away. ( Oh, I forgot about that monstrosity across the Ohio at Madision, In.). He just doesn’t seem like the humble kids that CAL recruited last year. He’s going to UCLA where it’s warm and oh so cuddlely.

Look, no one can question why either guy would come to UK. Certainly Cal has proven that he can make you a winner and an NBA high draft pick quickly. But other coaches have done that, too, even if not in as big numbers. If Shabazz has Adidas ties through family or is good friends with Anderson who is going to UCLA, so be it. He isn’t an idiot for going to UCLA who has put a handful of 1-n-dones in the NBA (Love and Tru I can think of off top of my head) and made final fours under Howland. Georgetown – not so sure about, but Monroe is a big man in the NBA under the latest Thompson head coach. Good school and facilities. In both cases, they are closer to home for these kids. In both cases, they will be big fish.

This isn’t personal folks. If they don’t choose UK, it will be disappointing, but they aren’t idiots and we will be ok.

Quit bashing these guys. If they pick UCLA and G’town, best of luck to them. Neither one is going to even get a whiff of the Final Four, but it’s their call. If Muhammad shocks the world and picks Duke, I amy have to reconsider, though.
