A little Friday afternoon Calipari video

I was just going to write a recap of Cal’s comments to the media but then I remembered that some people like seeing Coach in his bathrobe. This one’s for you, folks.

– Beisner just addressed this, but I’ll repeat it. As of today, Cal said that he would not recommend that any of the players on the roster enter their name into the NBA draft. With last year serving as good evidence, we know that Cal is a pretty straight shooter in this department. If he thinks you’re ready then he’ll say so. He’s not just going to deny UK potential ‘greatest days in program history’ to get a few players to return to school.

– Rightfully so, Cal talked about this team’s struggles in preventing offensive rebounds and closing down the stretch. He denied the assertion that it might just be unlucky and said that it’s about aggression and players that expect to win. He said that every player was expecting someone else to do something at the end of the game.

“You gotta try harder than the other guy’s trying.” I think that one is pretty self-explanatory. Chris Warren, Trey Thompkins and John Jenkins are exhibits 1a, 1b and 1c.

– Cal said that they told DeAndre that he can’t be waving his arms anymore because the refs are going to keep giving him technicals if he’s making a big show. In his defense, he has a newborn son.

– In terms of crappy road play, Cal said that his teams have, historically, played tougher on the road. He said that those teams went into an opposing arena intent on ruining the other team’s weekend. This team doesn’t have that mentality.

– Cal cited better preparation as one thing he’s battling for right now. He said that he had to get on the team during the shoot around before the Arkansas game and that needs to change.

In the end, Cal said that he wants the team to be rougher. I think we can all agree with that.

Go Cats!

I don’t believe it would have taken a fortune teller to decide about last year’s members.

Just a thought and I know it’s hypothetical. “IF” no one jumped early how would that work out with the scholarship situation. Wouldn’t we only be losing one, Jorts?

#2 – Yes Liggins just had a kid recently. Think that was why the couple of games before this one he seemed tired. I can attest that practicing, going to school, and taking care of a newborn will leave you in “zombie mode”

    14) because the ONLY explanation BCG had when the team lost was to be tougher…we just got our butt whooped, we need to be tougher. The guy was terrible. Practicing on game days, crazy substitutuion patterns, putting players in bathroom stalls. When Cal says it, I believe him because he can actually breakdown a game and situations to give an explanation. BCG could/would never do that.

Ha! Let that one sink in for a bit.

Toughness is such a relative term. I kinda unnderstand what he’s tryin to say but I wonder if these kids are understanding what he means. It all just comes down to being able to stay focused no matter what the crowd and referees are doin. At Rupp (so far) you’d think these kids are tough but again it’s at Rupp so how tough is that. But then on the road we get down but then we pull it back up even appearing to be tough, but then somehow we let it slip thru our hands. I don’t know I think our offense has become so predictable and we are so worn down by the end of the game it becomes more about strategy (or the lack thereof) and endurance. I’m not sure toughness is as much as it is as it could just be that for whatever reason, we just don’t have enough guys to stay with or out duel other really good teams. He mentions “competing” and we are. We’re barely losing most of these games. But we just haven’t been able to close the deal on the road. And unfortunately that is a confidence problem which doesn’t seem to be a priority right now.

I still hope some things “click” with this team, but I don’t expect it at this point in the season. I think Cal lacked a major motivational tool this year and it has contributed to the lack of improvement. Since there is no bench depth, Cal has not had the ability to sit the main guys when they don’t execute as needed.

Nice breakdown #30. I wonder if Cal told Jorts not to shoot outside of 5 feet, because earlier in the season Jorts either shot or at least made a pump fake – now it is 100% clear that he does not intend to shoot unless he is right under the goal. Personally, I have more confidence in Jorts shooting from the outside than Jones, and if Jorts took and made a shot or two, you would think it would open up the paint a bit for others (as his defender would be forced to come out to guard him).

  43. What?
    7:16 pm February 25, 2011 Permalink

#30…not sure Jones is a great one on one player unless A) only going left and B) doesn’t get his shot blocked!

Also, Jones needs to stay down low instead of wanting the ball 25 ft away from the goal! He’s a PF, not a PG!

It’ll either click for this group or it won’t…so far, it hasn’t. Cal did a pretty good job explaining things I think…looks like it’s on the players to change or keep getting the same results.

IDK…seems pretty clear and easy to me…I play hard and for 40 min…got a better shot at winning this game! Are they tired? I don’t think so…19 and a couple games a week, all the time outs and stuff…not sure how they could be tired? I think it’s on them at this point and if they decide to listen to their coach…they would be a tough out in the NCAAs!

    Liggins has a kid?
Is he actually helping raise it?
Has he moved out of Wildcat Lodge or he simply following in the foosteps of Sean Kemp?

If he is a responsible father – and not just a sperm donor – then Liggins probably needs to see about how he can make money playing ball – either here or overseas next season – or he’ll seriously think about returning for his senior season and hopefully be serious about academics so he can earn his degree.

14)…because Gillispie was an idiot and Calipari is a genius.

Honestly there is no comparison. And if you think there is, you must have been one of the ones to defend Billy G til the end. If you think this program was better under BCG than Cal, then you are smoking crack. Thats the bottom line.
