University of Kentucky Basketball, Football, and Recruiting news brought to you in the most ridiculous manner possible.

A letter for you..

Remember when Tubby Smith left UK for Minnesota and people didn’t think too highly of Kentucky fans?  It got a little ugly for a bit.  Well, turns out Tubby is having a few issues with the Golden Gophers and Minneapolis Star-Tribune columnist Jim Souhan would like to apologize to you for all of the things he said about you a few years ago.  You can choose to accept it or not.

Now back to the Grammy’s.

tubby ran our program into the ground. those recruiting classes were absolutely awful. we’re still paying for it. don’t just blame gillispie. at least he was bringing in better talent.

great article. i’ll never forget scott van pelt telling us that we got what we deserved after a gillispie loss. it was something like, “be careful what you wish for kentucky fan…tubby’s what?…
8-0?” or something along those lines. vitale exclaimed, “shame on you kentucky fans…26.3…26.3 wins a year and that’s not good enough?” well no. going 9-7 or 8-8 in conference and losing in the second round of the ncaa tounament two years in a row is not good enough. and he left us with a team that fought like hell to get into the tourney with an 11-seed and not make it the next year. we’re still paying for tubby’s ridiculously awful recruiting. look back 5-6 years ago…the teams that were kicking ass then are still doing it now (ohio st., duke, texas, kansas). unless these freshmen wake up and realize that they’re not ready for the nba and people stop telling them that they are, we’re not making any final fours any time soon.

i’m not giving billy g. a free pass. he was a complete turd. the best thing that happened to tubby was the hiring of gillispie. tubby got the ultimate free pass and left like a thief in the night to minnesota. this guy recruited orbzut, alleyne, carter and m. williams. you’d think he would have learned his lesson that 7’0″ dudes not listed on the top 100 list aren’t good enough to play at uk.
what a terrible time that was. it’s been a tough year, and the one and done stuff is going to be frustrating because of what could be if they only stay two years…but, we are so much better off now than where we were from ’06-’09.

    I’m also a Tubby fan
I don’t think that Tubby would be losing this mush on the road in the SEC though.
That being said, we’re more likely to get #8 with Cal

Here is an email I sent to the gentleman from Minnesota:

    You sir,

Know nothing about Kentucky. Racists? Kentucky currently has three division 1 head football coaches, they are all african american. Last time I checked Kentucky has had more african american coaches earlier and more often than any professional or college team in Minnesota. Kentucky, was never part of the confederacy and more Kentuckians fought for the Union than for the South.

Its moronic talking heads like yourself who create and/or perpetuate an unrealistic and unfair portrait of Kentucky and Kentuckians. You should be ashamed of yourself and apologize to the great Commonwealth of Kentucky and its fine citizens. You should also acknowledge Minnesota’s collective shortcomings with regard to diversity before calling a state of which you have no knowledge, racist. In other words, be wary of your glass house.

Simultaneously, you have furthered the stereotype that northerners are judgmental, pretentious, and overly self important (forgive my language) pricks. I’m not endorsing the stereotype, that’s just what I’ve heard. I’ll be thinking of you in your icy solitude on the next seasonably warm day at the horse races. I’ve spent some time in the north. I know why you speak with such vitriol, you’re just angry because you are cold all of the time, apparently like Tubby’s players.

Enjoy Tubby. You presumptuous northerners that always assume you are smarter than everyone else (even those that know a great deal more about a subject, i.e., basketball) deserve him.

    Kindest regards,

This guy is the Minnesota version of Dr. Tipton. I appreciate the nod in our direction but not Minnesota has no tradition to speak of…so they should be happy with 20-25 win seasons…and plenty of them are…see the comments pages following that article.

I used to think that Tubby was great at the x and o. But no more. How many remember the following: we were up 4 pts against Mich St. in the elite 8 with less than 3 min to go and Mich St gets 3 off. rebounds then finially hits a big 3 pt shot. We get that rebound if Hays was in the game but Tubby had him on the bench, (I know he had 4 fouls but what was tubby saving him for?) We get that rebound with hays in the game and go to the final 4. Final 4 = move love for Tubby. Also what was Tubby thinking telling Thomas to move from the foul lane in SEC tour against Miss State with Meeks getting ready to hit the second of 2 foul shots which would have given us a 4 pt lead and the win, but Miss St hit a long 3 to force OT and we get beat. We then get a lower seed in the NCAA. I think you can say those two really bad moves went a long way in Tubby going North.

I just want to also say I am really really glad that Billy Clyde never signed his contract. I break out in a cold sweat when I think where we would be now with Billy C.

When Bobby Perry is recruited as your starter, and he gives you 2 good games in his career, you know your coach is Tubby Smith.

Anyone remember the game where Tubby gave Sheray Thomas the final shot to win instead of Joe Crawford, Jodie Meeks, or Randolph Morris? It was a road game that we lost by 1. Tubby actually drew it up for Sheray. God save us all.

Want to know why Tubby did cut the cheese at UK? Because you don’t win here with Minnesota calibur players…

Tubster was not only a good coach but a fine gentleman as they come, BUT I saw the writing on the wall when he let Sonny Saul eat up a scholly. A GREAT PG from Indianapolis named Jason Gardner was also wanting to come to UK, fact: Jason and his pop were HUGE UK fans and he wanted to go to UK, but he didn’t want to sit the bench playing behind the coaches son. I’m sure you all remember Tubby pulling Wayne Turner out in the SEC Tourny with the game extremely close, only to have Sonny turn it over twice, and throwing up a three pointer that Ray Allen would’ve had a hard time hitting…we lost! When Bobby Lee was comming for a visit and Tubster was playing golf and let one of the assistants handle his visit…..We lost him to UF. Then he brokered a deal “during” the SEC Tourny to bolt to Minnesota after we lost in the NCAAs.
Then came the Clyde disaster, who then made UK the mediocre of college basketball. Those last six years of Tubby and Clyde made me feel we were back in the late 80’s and early 90s…..GO CATS!!!!!!!!

Hey there good buddy. Take a gander at a map of the U.S. sometime. Minnesota borders Canada. That’s pretty far north my friend. They’re northerners. Ever hear one talk?

Tubby Smith told Thomas to move from the FT line because Tubby had already negotiated a deal with Minn and he was ready to get the season over with. Not only did he cause that goof, but then instead of fouling the guy with 2 seconds left and putting him on the line for 2 (forcing him to hit the first, miss the second, get the rebound and score) he allowed him to come up court unguarded and shoot a wide open shot. THEN in OT Tubby had THREE different plays that made it look like he was throwing the game.

I have no respect for him, and never did. He was the FIRST coach to bash Gillispie for recruiting the Avery kid, and brought the Coach’s Association against UK. But when every other coach did it, there was no movement from the Association.

Im not sure why people are so convinced he was a great X and O coach. He had more talent during his first 5 years at UK that anyone in America. It wasnt until all those players left and we were left with “Tubbys” recruits that we saw a dropp off the cliff in talent and then people saw his play calling sucked too. It always sucked but guys like Hays, Bogans, and Prince were good enough to diminish it.

Players in trouble with the law, transferring out, not developing and not playing to potential??? Sound familiar UK fans, because Minn is seeing it now

#28 – Champ – You said, “agreed, but you can’t include players like heisenbuttel ,lemasters, kerns etc on that list as they were walk ons”

Why can’t I include the 3 walk-ons you listed? They were on the team, on the bench, wearing Kentucky uniforms. They were representatives of the team as hand selected by only one person (Tubby Smiff 😉 ).

Do you realize of what’s listed that’s an average of 2.7 duds per year over Tubby’s 10 year season (27/10)?

If you think about an average recruiting class for a 13 scholarship NCAA division 1 team, (and we’ll yank the walk-ons you listed for this comparison), but 13 spots turning over every 4 years equals 3.25 players per year needed. Since the list above is roughly 24 scholarship players equaling 2.4 players per year selected (24/10), that leaves 0.85 players left per year of available room to land the guaranteed big star that pans out.

Stretch that number out over 4 years, if that 0.85 of a recruit of worth actually stayed 4 years (which less than half did) you would have 3.4 players worth putting in the rotation available to put on the floor any given year. Remember, this number is overinflated because not all the calibur recruits stayed all 4 years (yet to be very kind I’ll use this assumption).

So in essence, during Tubby’s years we lacked 1.6 players per game worth putting on the court at any given time (considering the other 3.4 players played 40 minutes each, another stretch of the data in kind). When Kentucky hit the court we could beat unranked teams because they lacked a complete roster as well. Yet when Kentucky played a ranked team near the end of the season, after all the chaff was separated from the wheat, we weren’t playing 5 vs 5.

Why did Tubby only make 1 Final Four in 8 Years? He’d get beat when all he had to offer was 3.4 players vs 5 against end of season proven teams. When did he make the Final Four? When he still had at least 5 (I count 7 – see below) NCAA Division 1 calibur players leftover from Pitino’s recruiting classes.

The 1997-98 Class: (quality court worthy players – numbered)

    Jeff Sheppard (1)
    Nazr Mohammed (2)
    Scott Padgett (3)
    Wayne Turner (4)
    Heshimu Evans (5)
    Jamaal Magloire (6)
    Michael Bradley (7)
Allen Edwards (potential sub for limited minutes)
Cameron Mills (potential sub for limited offensive minutes)
    Saul Smith
Myron Anthony (potential sub for limited minutes)
    Ryan Hogan
Steve Masiello (Director of Ticket Operations)

Hence, another bit of revealing evidence behind the statement, “he couldn’t produce with his own players.”
