(Hat tip to the always excellent allkyhoops.com site for the story)
The picture above comes from a recent John Lucas camp in which Billy Clyde was the main speaker to a group of campers. After the speech, the man in the Texas shirt, Max Ivany, wrote the following on his blog:
At the end of our conversation he asked, “Coach, will I still be able to recruit your guys with the D-1 Ambassadors?” lol…”Hell yeah”, I said. Who wouldn’t want their kids to be part of any program Billy Clyde was associated with. He has my 100% respect. Make no mistake, he’ll be back prowling the sidelines this next basketball season. Look for Coach G to be scouring gyms for talent when he gets rehired next April. I’ve got a pretty good idea where he’ll end up but when you start talking about another man’s job it’s a sensitive subject and I’d prefer to keep that to myself until the time comes.
Apparently Ivany is a longtime talent evaluator in Texas and is well-respected. I must say that his comment, “who wouldnt want their kids to be part of any program Billy Clyde was associated with” strikes me as bizarre, but so be it. The interesting part of the story may be that Billy Clylde could have a job lined up for next year. It is often thought that SMU or Houston are two schools in which the future era could include a Gillispie sighting, and that he could find himself “bouncing back” onto their sidelines. Regardless, it is good to see Gillispie looking healthier and it will be interesting to see where he ends up….even if I would be highly unlikely to send my kids there.
