Kentucky Sports Radio

University of Kentucky Basketball, Football, and Recruiting news brought to you in the most ridiculous manner possible.

A couple of names from UK’s past on the move?

tubby

Doug Gottlieb addressed some of the chatter around college basketball today, and rumors of the coaching carousel have already started to swirl. Apparently two of the biggest rumors surround Kentucky’s former coach Tubby Smith and current Arkansas head man and Unforgettable John Pelphrey. Here’s what Gottlieb had to say:

The hottest chatter in coaching news is the speculation that Tubby Smith will be on the move this offseason. Three different head coaches told me the coaching fraternity is abuzz over whether Georgia Tech will buy out Paul Hewitt (reportedly in excess of $5 million dollars) and land Smith.

Missouri coach Mike Anderson is the most logical first call for Arkansas if, as widely speculated, it makes a change. Anderson, who was Nolan Richardson’s longtime right hand man in Fayetteville, has turned down big money before — like last year with Oregon reportedly offering in excess of $2 million dollars — but Arkansas is seen as a destination job.

The rest of the article is Insider Only, but luckily Doug Gottlieb wrote it so you probably didn’t want to read it. Anyway, if this were to come to fruition, it would mean a return to the state of Georgia for Tubby and a setback in what recently appeared to be a promising young coaching career for Pel. Although beating Kentucky was said by some to be a job saving win, it appears that the possibility for Pelphrey to be gone after the year is still very real. As for Tubby, it seems like any time a job in Georgia is even rumored to be available, he’s the first name to be brought up. And, since his time in Minnesota hasn’t done much to prove that whole notion about UK fans being crazy for wanting a change, I guess it’s not that surprising that he might be looking to cut bait. I’m not saying he might be looking to get out of town before the bottom falls out, but he might be looking to get out of town before the bottom falls out. Either way, it’ll be interesting to see what the offseason brings for two big parts of the last couple of decades of Kentucky basketball.

I don’t think Tubby is really good enough to be the coach at Ga. Tech. He’s more of a D2 level guy.

Some one asked me if Georgia Tech was that stupid. The answer is yes, they are. Georgia Tech fans know little or nothing about basketball so they may as well stay with the loser they have. Why would you waste millions and bring in another loser? A loser that has worn out his welcome in less than four years. But you know something, Minnesota is showing us up. It took UK 10 years to figure out the lazy liar known as the Tubster and only four years for Minnesota. Are they six years smarter than us?

Ga. Tech has always been a middle tier at best Div. I team. NO reason why tubby wouldn’t be a good fit down there.

I was at the Arkansas game and talked to many of the AR fans. Most of them said even with the game win against UK Pelphrey would still not have saved his job. They said too many of the big time contributors and supporters were not happy with him.

Are talking heads going to chastise Minnesota for being unhappy with Tubby? Didn’t think so. Because NOBODY cares about Minnesota.

4). I don’t think it took most of us 10 years to figure out what Tubby was. It was pitiful when UK fans were being called a bunch of racists just because we could see he could not recruit with the best and was an average bench coach. The administration just didn’t have the balls to can him because it would have been a P.R. nightmare. Remember, Tubby left, he wasn’t fired.

Look at Tubby’s win/loss record at UK. Look at his early SEC dominance. He’s right up there with Pitino. Even with great players, he still coached tough defense and won a national championship.

Yes, the fans (and Tubby) felt his heart wasn’t as up for the challenge of coaching UK and mercilessly high level competition as he once was and he moved on.

But it’s exhausting to hear you idiots who act like he is a D2 coach and not give him props for all the good he’s done for the program. He’s not our coach anymore, and has only represented the program with dignity (unlike Pitino).

Geez. I remember some people who wanted Pelphrey considered for UK. Ha!

Tubby is great. I wish him the best.

Tubby was a great coach. He sort of lost the eye of the tiger though and It was time for him to go. I think he made some critical errors while at UK. Like playing Saul(Klingon) as the PG. And He let his teams party a bit too much. At first this was ok, example – Burner Turner (how you think he got that nick name for real). He also just rode out the last few seasons like he gave up a little.

But to remember him as a terrible coach that is wrong. If Tubby would have not gotten fed up. If he would have stayed committed 100% to the job. He could still be coach.

Tubby was a very good coach when he got here. Was energized and worked hard both on and off the court. He recruited very good players and even his last recruiting class of Morris, Rondo and the rest was a dang good grab! I think he just got tired of falling short of the Final 4. He made the elite 8 4 times…ran the table in the SEC, he could win games too.

Too many 10 loss season piled up and a few major mistakes with players and stuff…he needed to leave and he did. Wish it hadn’t of taken 10 years and only 8 years…but it is what it is.

He’ll never be a national championship coach again though…never! 20 win seasons and a sweet 16 from time to time. He couldn’t do it again at UK, what makes anyone think he can do it again coaching at schools such as Minn or GT?

it wasn’t just that tubby was lazy and didn’t recruit, it was also that he didn’t make his lazy assistant coaches recruit either. as great as reggie hanson was for UK when he PLAYED here, he was a TERRIBLE assistant coach. so were the others. they were all lazy on the recruiting trail.

Talk about re-beating a dead horse. Tubby is gone, old news, we all know the story great coach, not a good recruiter, won with pitinos players….etc etc… lets move past this already!! I am worried about now, we are 2 games away from being a 10 loss team!!

Easy on that great coach stuff….no way!…. He’s only a mid-major coach, like he was at Tulsa and Georgia, and as he proved to be in the end at KY….. Georgia Tech is crazy!

You are missing the point. He WAS a great coach. Became totally complacent and will forever be remembered as a what might have been. No doubt the Ramblin’ Wreck from Georgia Tech will welcome the Tubster with open arms. He is a national championship coach – just like Nolan Richardson, Jim Harrick and Gary Williams – ONE AND DONE!

My people tell me the Minnesota AD is not at all concerned if Tubby decides to head for greener pastures. Apparently he has an ace up his sleeve and a deal lined up with a rather high profile fellow who is currently out of work. No it isn’t Sean Sutton. But if this guy goes to Minnesota he might be able to land a high profile recruit from California who is also looking for a place to land. He wants to be the first guy to clean up after and wreck the former house of Tubby x2.

I hope Pelphrey stays at Arkansas. I think he has the Hogs going in the right direction. As far as the Tub, he is doing the same Junk he did at UK. He still plays not to lose. He still doesnt recruit. He still has tons of players leave his program. UMinn Basketball is Team turmoil all over again. If Pelph does get fired, Maybe Cal will add him as an assistant at UK. Go Big Blue!!

Some of the Tubby haters kill me. I was as down as anyone on Tubby the last couple of years, but it was because he wasnt bringing in any talent to go with the talent that he did have. For a long while Tubby brought in lots of talent and surrounded those players with diamonds in the rough and underated players. Then the diamonds dried up and the talent decided to not show up. Rondo and Morris were doing well, and Bradley was alright but Crawford was inconsistent and Sheray, and Bobby Perry were not 2nd string players at UK. Sheray should have been 3rd string and Perry had some mnoments, but a power foward he should not bhave been. Tubby will get it done elsewhere. He is one of the best X’s and O’s coaches around. He owns Pitino. In fact I think he is the only one of Pitino’s guys with a winning record against Rick. Tubby left UK in a hurry imo. Minn. is a pitstop for Tubby, and he will settle in more at GTech.

My favorite part of Minnesota games is seeing the unsuccessful plays run after a timeout. Never gets old. I expect Dick Vitale to be outraged that there are some people in Minnesota dissatisfied. How dare they!
